Burn_The_Right , in Doctors, patients try to shame insurers online to reverse authorization denials

We need nationalized healthcare. Now. There are 32 developed nations on earth. 31 of them have nationalized healthcare options. We are the only country that does not.

Why are conservatives (and neo-liberals) so opposed to modern healthcare?

Retix ,

There are, unfortunately, many people who only get enjoyment out of other people’s jealousy. They are proud that they have “good” insurance that covers everything, in the same way they are proud of their expensive house/car/boat/etc. If everyone has that thing, they aren’t special and it isn’t a cool toy because anyone could

Lutefisky ,

One of several reasons is they can’t make obscene amounts of money from socialized healthcare. Another would be their aversion to helping the less fortunate who they see as simply moral failures in life who don’t deserve handouts. And maybe a final point is that they know and trust the corruption of free market solutions instead of the “obviously inept and corrupt, gravy-train of welfare cheating governments” that they’ve been taught to hate (until the handout money comes to them during an emergency).

jmp242 ,

I think it’s because it’d end a lot of jobs and moneymaking opportunities. Imagine all those huge insurance companies just… not being needed the day nationalized healthcare happens. What about all those administrators who fill out the paper work in doctor’s offices?

OTOH, it might also be what’s needed to cool down the job market in the US.

gAlienLifeform ,
@gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world avatar

Lot of typewriter repair jobs got ended by the advent of computers but we didn’t let that stop us, we shouldn’t protect obvious economic inefficiencies like this just to reward already affluent people

HooPhuckenKarez ,

You're bullshit opinion is why I can't find a decent, locally made, buggy whip.

jmp242 ,

I’m just saying that one thing most politicians do not want to be seen to do is get rid of any jobs. This is why it’s hard to get traction with it - it’ll hurt them politically directly(people think nationalized health care is worse or bad), it’ll hurt their campaigns (cause contributions), and it’ll hurt them on “the economy” because they “killed lots of good jobs”.

"Prior authorization" is bullshit. You know what kind of prior authorization you need for a procedure or prescription? The doctor fucking ordering it.

snooggums ,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

I love needing to get 'prior' authorization once a year to continue taking the same medication I have taken for the last decade.

No, I don't want to try the ones that don't work again just because they look similar on your spreadsheet.

Nougat ,

What I like is having to get "prior authorization" for an antidepressant that I've been taking for years, and then I run out because it's the weekend and nobody can get hold of anybody for anything.

The 98 year old editor of that newspaper died the day after the raid.

I understand that 98 is a bit of an extreme age, but I guarantee you that the stress of watching you constitutional rights being violated was the tipping point for this person’s health. Imagine living for 98 years and some shit cop pushes you to your grave.

vlad76 ,
@vlad76@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

There probably is no way to actually legally prove that they’re at fault. But if I was one of those cops, I’d have trouble sleeping at night.

LeadSoldier ,

The type of person who wants to be a cop doesn’t have trouble sleeping after this.

vlad76 ,
@vlad76@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I’d change that to “The kind of person who successfully becomes a cop…”.

I think a lot of people want to be a force for good, and the intent behind police as a concept is to reduce crime, and crime is generally bad. So a lot of people want to be cops to make the world better. But that’s like wanting to be an honest politician. Most people already playing the game are there for personal power, and if you don’t lie and cheat you won’t have as much power as those already in place.

LeadSoldier ,

If a person in America doesn’t already know that all cops are bastards and that there have been constant protests and reporting about it over the past couple of decades then they are choosing to be a type. I’m no longer willing to pretend that everybody has good intentions. This isn’t the case for police and the FBI.

ira ,

That’s the thing about felony murder. If her death occurred as a result of their commission of a felony, then they should be on the hook for felony murder. It doesn’t matter that they didn’t directly kill her.

Felony murder isn’t a phrase to disambiguate between a murder that’s a felony and some kind of nonexistent misdemeanor murder. It refers to a very specific type of “murder” where somebody dies as a result of somebody else committing a felony. The commission of the felony is enough to make the person liable - they don’t have to have intended to kill anybody in the process or be directly involved in the death.

Four unarmed teenagers break into a house. The homeowner shoots and kills one of them. The three survivors are all liable for felony murder for the fourth’s death, and can face life in prison or even a death sentence.

A group of criminals break into a house. One stays outside as a lookout, completely unaware of what is happening in the house. The elderly homeowner tries to stop the criminals in the house, but slips and falls and hits his head and dies from a brain hemorrhage. The lookout is liable for felony murder.

Two cops are having a disagreement at work. They get a call of a burglary in progress and drive out there and start chasing the suspect. One of the cops shoots at the suspect, but “accidentally” misses and fatally wounds the other cop they were fighting with back at the station. The burglar is liable for felony murder for the cop’s death.

If the same standards were applied to the criminals who raided the journalist’s house, then they’d all be charged with felony murder.

eating3645 ,

That’s probably why you’re not a cop

Yes. People. Stahp.

Willer ,

while i am a bit sceptic of the value of this article, no i dont. I have never in my life put plastic in the microwave and never in my life did i think that this would be a good idea. Not because of conviction or anything but because i developed a fight and flight reaction towards heating plastic.

usualsuspect191 ,

There are tons of foods packaged in plastic that are (according to the directions) meant to be microwaved, never mind people heating up leftovers in takeout containers or whatever. It’s super common. And even if you never do it yourself, I can almost guarantee that your favourite restaurant does so you’re still consuming foods microwaved in plastic one way or another.

JustAManOnAToilet ,

girlfreddy ,
@girlfreddy@mastodon.social avatar

@JustAManOnAToilet @usualsuspect191

I stopped 30+ years ago after microwaving chili and it melted the side of the plastic container.

Fyi there's been stories about this for years (usually having to do with chemical contamination from the plastic) but the FDA never seemed to look into it.

Imo that's because Big Oil didn't want them to, because it would not only remove a HUGE source of their revenue but would also open them up to massive lawsuits.

LillyPip OP , (edited )

I’m literally doing it as we speak. :(

e: I’ve been buying Steamables because I’m disabled and can’t easily cook. For those who don’t know, it’s basically a meal in a plastic bag, that you microwave for six minutes, and apparently the literal worst thing you can do.

Now I think of it, as a disabled and poor person, I’m struggling to think of a meal I can make that isn’t riddled with plastics. I guess we’re doomed.

Huel or Soylent isn’t too expensive (if you get the powder) and I’d say it tastes reasonable. Huel especially has some great ingredients in it.

@RozhkiNozhki@lemmy.world avatar

I’m sure there’s plenty of examples but I’m going to share one from my work experience.

We had a patient who survived a really bad car accident but their jaw was broken in 4 (four) places. One of those cases when the doctor will wire your mouth shut leaving a small hole for the straw so you can drink your soup for the next x weeks.

The patient had a facial reconstructive surgery coming and their surgeon ordered an MRI of their jaw to see where the pieces were before cutting them open. The patient, unfortunately, had one of those cheapo insurance plans that were provided by their employer. Said insurance denied the MRI authorization 3 (three!) times due to “lack of medical necessity”. It took us literal hours of arguing with that arsehole adjustor and their supervisors on the phone until they finally approved it.

The federal government has proposed ways to reform prior authorization that would require insurance companies to provide more transparency about denials and to speed up their response times.

So insurance companies can keep doing the same bullshit, they just need to send you more meaningless fine print about it more quickly. Gee, thanks Biden administration.

If finalized, those federal changes [wouldn’t ] be implemented [until] 2026.

Ok, I already said my sarcastic “thanks,” you can stop making it worse now.

But even then, the rules would apply only to some categories of health insurance, including Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Medicaid plans, but not employer-sponsored health plans. That means roughly half of all Americans wouldn’t benefit from the changes.
