So The Onion makes up the fictional company name Global Tetrahedron, a real company uses the name, and then later buys The Onion.

It’s all coming together.

FTA:

The Onion’s owner said on Thursday that the satirical news site has been sold to a new Chicago-based firm created by four digital media veterans who are fans of the publication.

This is very good news!

catloaf ,

It looks like the company was created to own the Onion.

gregorum ,

Apparently by super-fans of The Onion who wanted to save it when they saw it was for sale. And they have some great plans for it: fund it well, bring back ONN, keep the staff, and let them do whatever they want!

Awesome.

ripcord ,
@ripcord@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah. This is great news I needed today.

The Onion is an absolute gem, too. Everything about this makes me a little happy.

Edit: Just turned off adblock on their site and clicked on a couple ads.

gregorum ,

Many people have commented, since they were bought out by their (now previous) ownership that they really needed to be owned by someone who both understood them, actually liked them, and could fund them, even through periods when they might not always be “extremely profitable”. Their (now past) ownership wasn’t the type to be so patient with periods of unprofitably or the controversy that the publication might expectedly generate.

I’m pretty certain that its new owners will.

Fisk400 ,

What makes laws strong is precedent and this law doesn’t have any. Her case is too flimsy and we don’t want her to set precedent since she has infinite lawyers to defend her. Its better to get more solid cases first and then go after her when there is solid precedent.

stevedidwhat_infosec ,

Bingo. Just wanted to thank you for saying this

fuego ,

It’s better not to persecute people just because you disagree with them.

It’s sad how you people are literally pushing for a world where someone can get arrested for not calling a trans woman a woman.

You’re going to make way more enemies than friends with that rhetoric, trust me.

Fisk400 ,

Hello baby account that was created in order to comment on this thread but is also asking me to trust you.

The bill does not say that people will be arrested for “Not calling trans women women”. it’s the fucking Jordan Peterson thing again. You need to make clear threats towards the group and calling for the group to be abused to the same standard required by individual harassment charges.

fuego ,

So what’s the problem? She’s not making clear threats to the group or calling for them to be abused, but people in this thread still think she should be arrested.

There’s no emotional sensitivity, they’re just afraid of the guillotine.

WhyDoYouPersist ,

I feel like rich people are more brazen than ever before. It’s a long time before we see any guillotines for the rich in my country at least (the US). We regularly put people down who have pennies to their name though or just average Joes living their lives. Death by cop and death by violence in a broken penal system. Also completely unavoidable health issues that increasingly only the wealthy end can afford to rectify.

Correlation does not imply causation!

Cryophilia ,

I’m tired of this phrase. It totally does. A statistically significant correlation is very frequently a good candidate for causation, pending other research.

Correlation does not prove causation. But it absolutely implies it, all other things being equal.

pmk ,

“Imply” can mean an indirect suggestion, but it can also mean a logical necessity. Such is language, unfortunately.

Cryophilia ,

Imo mathematical logical notation is a perverse hijacking of actual words. Like in philosophy. Or certain “academic” terms.

Just use the existing words that already have definitions you want. Or if you must use different words, take a random one like “whales” or something. Don’t take the thing that has a definition and then use it to mean its opposite. Eventually that usage will trickle into popular usage and just confuse everyone.

davidgro ,

For the most part, I believe they Did take existing words that had the definition they needed, then the common definitions changed over time while the sciences definitions stayed the same. The sciences need strict meanings for words, it’s a bit like legalese where they use outdated words or meanings, but for good reason - so that they know they are talking about the same thing, when common meanings drift all over.

TheKMAP ,
Cryophilia ,

And also a non technical term. Which is how the great majority of people use the phrase.

TheKMAP ,

But the entire phrase is technical. It’s discussing science.

Doesn’t matter. Most people don’t use it that way

“I really don’t want my child exploited on the internet,” said Kaelyn, a mother in Melbourne, Australia, who like Elissa and many other parents interviewed by The Times agreed to be identified only by a middle name to protect the privacy of her child.

“But she’s been doing this so long now,” she said. “Her numbers are so big. What do we do? Just stop it and walk away?”

Yeah…

That’s what a responsible person would do

“She got slaughtered all through primary school,” said Kaelyn, the mother in Melbourne. “Children were telling her, ‘We can’t play with you because my mom said too many perverts follow you on the internet.’”

Yeah, that’s why these moms did it. If they were so worried about their kids’ privacy, I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t have set up the accounts in the first place, but ok.
