Laborer3652 , in Hakeem Jeffries rejects GOP spending bill as ‘unserious and unacceptable’

Oh man I bet repugnants are fucking thrilled for a shutdown in Oct. Not only do they get to turn off the government (a big goal for them) they ALSO get to interfere with the election at the same time! Win-win for them!

another horseshit propaganda article being put out before the elections to try to put icing over the rotten, moldy cake that is the US

@proper@lemmy.world avatar

The latest data came Tuesday in an annual report from the Census Bureau, which said the median household income, adjusted for inflation, rose 4% to $80,610 in 2023, up from $77,450 in 2022. It was the first increase since 2019, and is essentially unchanged from that year’s figure of $81,210, officials said. (The median income figure is the point at which half the population is above and half below and is less distorted by extreme incomes than the average.)

it’s just data from a census report, guy. Not a “spin”. Reading is fundamental.

Asafum , (edited )

I still fucking hate this bullshit metric designed to hide the actual issue, pay. Not everyone is married and even still, that would be 80k for at least two people.

I believe household income is all earners in a location. Track individual incomes! Why don’t you track individual incomes? (Insert duck chasing person meme here)

SnotFlickerman , in Americans’ inflation-adjusted incomes rebounded to pre-pandemic levels last year
@SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

“We are back to that pre-COVID peak that we experienced,” said Liana Fox, assistant division chief in the Social, Economic and Housing Statistics Division at the Census Bureau.

Funny, there were poor and desperate people lining my cities streets before COVID and it just got worse post-COVID.

We’re doing fuck all for American citizens and then absolutely crowing when we’re barely scraping back to where we were, and where we were wasn’t that fucking great to begin with.

Pre-COVID US had just as many broken and desperate people, had just as many people who couldn’t actually afford to live in the city they actually worked in, and essentially had an underclass of “working homeless.” But I guess getting back to the same level of working homeless is something to celebrate!!

So shout from the rooftops everybody, we’re back to that weak ass bullshit of a point! Rejoice, our economy is doing good enough that the middle class people can turn up their noses and ignore everyone our economy hurts!

Psychodelic ,

Yeah, I couldn’t believe the ridiculous narrative either. After the reading the article though, it at least makes some sense for me as a Mexican-American dude. It’s mainly white people doing better and I guess that totally tracks (also helps explains why so many people here are ready to believe it). I honestly sometimes forget to remind myself “American” hardly ever means all Americans

That said, it’s wild how little discussion there is on this here and how any mention of frustration with the accepted narrative results in others thinking you’re just a bitter idiot, or something

gndagreborn , in Trump falsely claims children are being forced into gender transition ops at school
@gndagreborn@lemmy.world avatar

Even if that claim is remotely close to true. Why? What on earth would the purpose for a gender transition conspiracy possibly serve?

You have to do more backflips than simone biles to match the mental gymnastics for that kind of thinking.

His base believes in doing things just for the cruelty. So these ridiculous claims, (gangs taking over apartments, immigrants eating cats, forced transitions) are believable to them based on their own support for doing things just to be cruel.

andros_rex , in Most US voters say plastics industry should be held responsible for recycling claims – report

Plastic recycling is a farce to make it appear as a “personal responsibility” issue.

Notice also how the labeling for plastics uses a sign that looks remarkably similar to a recycling logo - whether that specific type of plastic is actually recyclable or not.

It is all a public relation campaign, because fundamentally plastic is unsustainable and harmful. Governments have collectively shat the bed by placing the burden of dealing with plastic on the consumer. (This is very similar to the “carbon footprint” idea - which was a creation of the oil industry.)

I toured the place where my city collects its plastic recycling - the director in charge was very open about the fact that most of it isn’t used and can’t really be used anyway.

Boozilla , in America’s 3D Printed Gun Problem Is Getting Worse and Spreading to the World
@Boozilla@lemmy.world avatar

Dumb question: how do the Europeans get ammo for these 3d-printed guns? Isn’t ammunition also tightly controlled / regulated over there?

Canopyflyer , in Delta flight clips another plane on taxiway at Atlanta airport, knocks off smaller plane's tail

Ooof… That looks EXpensive and not just for the CRJ. The larger plane (it looks like an A350, but not sure) is going to need its wing structure and wing box all thoroughly inspected. Outside of the engines, those are the two most expensive structures on an airplane. Not saying that it is going to be a write off for either plane, but it is a possibility. I’m curious if the bending moment of that impact was outside what the larger plane’s wing box was designed for. That force had to be huge, given the length of the wings on the large plane.

I look forward to seeing the analysis from some of the better aviation Youtubers on this one.

@j4k3@lemmy.world avatar

I find these articles funny. A glock switch can be made out of almost anything from a bit of bent metal sheet to carved wood. 3d printing one is irrelevant. When it comes to guns, the arguments are usually idiotic. I can making nearly anything with a small lathe and mill. The gun problem is a multifaceted cultural problem. Their misuse is largely the result of hopeless disenfranchisement of the poor and average person, along with politically leveraging ignorance and corporate capitalist abuses.

I wish I could get a small lathe or mill (let alone both) for the same price as a 3D printer!

(No, seriously: I own a 3D printer but not a metal lathe, and the only reason is cost. If you know of a <$100 metal lathe, link me the product page and I’ll buy it instantly.)

j4k3 ,
@j4k3@lemmy.world avatar
cm0002 , (edited )

The problem isn’t the tooling, ofc you can do it with a block of metal and a lathe and mill, but you may or may not have the skillset to be successful

In contrast a 3D printer is cheap, easy to obtain, and can be operated as simply as download file > send to 3d printer
