invertedspear , in Southwest to get rid of open seating, offer extra legroom in biggest shift in its history

Southwest has been shown to have the shortest turnaround time of all the airlines due to open seating. IIRC when other airlines were failing and merging, Southwest stayed independent and even profitable. This is just another example of short term gain being prioritized over long term strategy.

A soldier that fails to do their duty would have a similar trial. Police aren’t soldiers, but they sure like to pretend, so I guess the shoe fits. There were two company worth of troops outside of Uvalde.

valek879 , in Uvalde school police officer set to appear in court on criminal charges over mass shooting response.

So as much as I think the response was bullshit and all those cops deserve a place in hell, how can we bring charges against any of them for failing to protect the kids?

Castle Rock v. Gonzales, 545 U.S. 748 (2005) find that police have no duty to protect. He heard gunshots and it was scary so he ran away. Sounds like what I expect from our boys in blue.

I’m not saying it’s right just that it feels impossible to actually prosecute.

pahlimur ,

The police have no duty to protect the public has only been tested under orders to protect from what I understand. Being charged with murder for not enforcing a restraining or protective order that led to a murder is sort of ridiculous, so I understand not forcing the police to act on every protective order.

Being part of an active shooting where it was obvious children were dying hasn’t been ruled as not part of a police officers duty to protect. I hope this doesnt set new precedent because that would be insane.

valek879 ,

Thanks for the clarification and pointing out that we’re testing this now. I guess the implications are super yikes if it is found they have no duty to act in an active shooter situation. Seems like we have enough of those here that it would become a problem pretty quickly.

WatDabney , in Gov. Gavin Newsom issues executive order for removal of homeless encampments in California

Cynically, I take this to mean that he’s given up on the possibility of a 2024 presidential run.

While this will undoubtedly be popular with Californians who don’t give a shit about homeless people and just don’t want to have to see it, it would almost certainly have led to some blowback in the middle of a Democratic presidential campaign, so it’s safe to assume that the decision was waiting in the wings so to speak - ready to be implemented, but only when it wouldn’t cause problems for his federal aspirations.

eldavi , (edited )

even more cynically: i don’t think this will matter.

consider biden: we have 50+ years of documentation including videos showing his vote against gay marriage; advocating against lgbtq in federal service; siding with pro-segregationists; and attacking feminist supporters in every event (esp anita hill); yet today’s voters still call him the most progressive presidential candidate we’ve ever had despite other candidates having a MUCH more flawless records.

so unless you’ve suffered or are close to someone who have suffered at the hands of the candidate, you’re going to ignore all the bad shit he’s done and condemn those who point out his reprehensibility. that means that newsom won’t have to worry about anything unless the homeless and poor somehow became a sizeable voting block.

WatDabney ,

Nothing I disagree with there. Unfortunately.

And along those same lines, it calls to mind a thing that’s concerned me to some degree all along, and just that much more so since Biden dropped out.

The painfully obvious DNC/democrat establishment strategy for decades at least has been to try to maintain the flow of corporate soft money by running candidates who aren’t going to upset the status quo, which is to say are not actually leftists, and to count on just being arguably somewhat less bad than the Republican to be enough to win, or at least not lose embarrassingly badly.

And as far as that goes, Trump provides them with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, since it would be nearly impossible for the DNC/dem establishment to put up a candidate who’s worse, and more to the point, the threat that Trump and his plutocratic backers and christofascist coattail-riders pose is so blatant snd severe that an awful lot of overt malfeasance on the part of the dem candidate - much more than has already been the case - would be overlooked.

I see it in myself. Even as aware as I am and as much as I loathe the establishment scum and their cynical and entirely self-serving manipulation, Trump and his handlers and followers are such an existential threat that I see no reasonable choice other than to vote for whoever ends up running against him.

But I hate it, and the more I think about it, the more I hate it, and it makes me concerned not just for who that might be (it could be much worse than Harris) but of what they might do after the election, presuming they win. We could even potentially end up trading the threat of one autocracy for the reality of another, just arguably somewhat less bad, one.

dactylotheca ,
@dactylotheca@suppo.fi avatar

Like many other states, Massachusetts offers tax credits for film and television productions that film in the state. In particular, Massachusetts offers credits worth 25 percent of a production’s expenses and payroll tax liability incurred in the Bay State. If the credits exceed the production’s Massachusetts tax liability, they can claim 90 percent of the remainder as a refund.

All in all the article was a bit of a hit piece against these tax credits in both MA and other states. Could be completely on point for all I know though, no clue if they’re representing the facts accurately or not

Reason is billionaire republican talking rag.

They are targeting industries they don't like here.

For example, you will never see them cover tax credits and other transfers to Koch Industries and its subsidiaries get in place like Georgia.

Or oil majors being funded by the taxpayers.

With that being said, we should not be providing these clown ass transfers to "private enterprise"

I shill this point regularly and most people appear to support these transfers around here as long as it is their "team" getting them.

KevonLooney ,

Really disappointed in Newsom here. He’s done a lot to try and improve the housing situation here (though not nearly enough, it’s a lot more movement than this issue has seen in years), so I really expected better than this of him. The camp sweeps are just the biggest fucking waste of money. The state spends millions of dollars playing whack-a-mole, tormenting the people in our society who need the most help and just wallpapering over the problem, and it does absolutely nothing to help. Arguably, it makes things worse. That money could be better spent on direct action, building affordable housing, funding rehabilitation, etc. But we gotta blow it out our ass just tormenting people because whiny wealthier people want them moved now.

And we have the audacity to mock communist regimes for fake grocery stores, as if this is any better. You can’t fix homelessness by making these people miserable. The extra frustrating part is that the real fixes are far, far cheaper than this stupid fucking band-aid system we’ve developed.

eldavi ,

i liked him before because he was the only democrat to force the issue of gay marriage by providing marriage certificates to same sex couples while he was mayor of san francisco.

catloaf ,

The author is not accusing them of doing it, they are reporting that someone else is. The author is supporting those accusations by showing the evidence.

Common Dreams is a pretty shitty source, but this is actually reasonable journalism. They should report just the facts.

homesweethomeMrL ,

Yes I know. They’re using “accused” correctly - and limiting the impact of the article. The headline I offered changes no facts, presuming they show them in the article, and doesn’t limit the impact by offloading the premise as an “accusation”.

House GOP is funding Project2025 efforts. Is it doing so because Project2025 told them to? That’s irrelevant. If that’s the focus of the article, it shouldn’t be.

Saying “accused” is weak - it limits the impact because they’re not directly tying the budgeting and Project2025 together and they’re not saying who’s “accusing” them. It’s clickbaity.

My main complaint against commondreams is their adblocker-blocker. This type of headline writing is not unique to them.

Apparently the piece of shit was a Republican all along.

According to the article:

“This executive order directs state agencies to move urgently to address dangerous encampments while supporting and assisting the individuals living in them — and provides guidance for cities and counties to do the same,” Newson said in a statement. “There are simply no more excuses. It’s time for everyone to do their part.”

“Our city encampment teams and street outreach staff have been going out every day to bring people indoors, and to clean and clear encampments,” spokesperson Parisa Safarzadeh told CNN in a statement. “This is why we are seeing a five year low in the City’s tent count on our streets.”

Newsom has said while he opposes penalties for people sleeping outside, the Grants Pass ruling has been interpreted so widely that it broadly prevents cities from doing anything.

Yeah, I dunno. Doesn’t exactly feel the same as the republican agendas we’ve been hearing about.

They talk nicer, but in reality

Personal possessions, including medicines and necessary medical devices, are routinely thrown away. It’s a quotidian event that Leilani Farha, the United Nations special rapporteur on adequate housing, described as a “cruelty” that she hasn’t seen in other impoverished corners of the world.

web.archive.org/…/sweeps-of-homeless-camps-in-cal…)

“'The idea that a government would deny people those services … when they have nowhere else to go suggests a kind of cruelty that is unsurpassed,” Farha told Business Insider. “It’s an attempt to erase people. Worse than erase — I can only use the word annihilate. It is a denial of someone’s humanity.'”

Under international human rights law, governments are required “to apply the maximum of available resources to upgrading informal settlements” like slums, shanty towns, and homeless encampments.

web.archive.org/…/un-expert-san-francisco-homeles…

“The struggle in the south is to legalize and regularize encampments,” she said. “Here, the struggle is simply to be able to create an encampment. In the south, there’s sort of a blind eye that has turned. Once an informal settlement is created, it’s established. Whereas here, they can’t create them.”

In the Bay Area, Farha talked to many people who were temporarily living in an encampment before they were ordered to move by city officials during a “tent sweep.”

“It’s damaging because they always have to move,” she says. “They’re treated like nonentities. Sometimes they say (belongings are) put in storage, but more often they’ll dump everyone’s possessions into one Dumpster. It’s horrible. It’s not dignified. The people have nowhere to go. It’s illogical. It’s tragic.”
