They should not be allowed to continue hoovering up companies. They have more than enough resources to break into new and existing markets from scratch. Allowing them to acquire additional companies and talent erodes competition.

refurbishedrefurbisher ,

Unless, of course, they bribe the right politicians and justices; then it’s okay.

sik0fewl ,

I think you mean tip the right politicians. Bribes are illegal.

refurbishedrefurbisher ,

Silly me. Yes, of course.

Oh goodie, another round or three of layoffs

Ok_imagination , in Google is close to making its biggest acquisition ever | CNN Business

From what we’ve seen with Wiz. It’s hard to beat their cloud and container security. I hope this sell doesn’t go through, we’ll likely have to switch from them as a Microsoft shop

partial_accumen ,

Did you switch away from Terraform when IBM bought Hashicorp?

Liberalism is the transformation of mankind into cattle.

-Nietzsche

What does that make cattle transformed into ?

Steak.

Incomplete and out of context sentiment, recommended reading here: historicalmaterialism.org/nietzsche-in-his-time-t…

In addition to its critical analysis of Nietzsche’s philosophy, The Aristocratic Rebel presents readers with a distinctive window into nineteenth century liberal thought, showing how Nietzsche held deep sympathies with liberal thinkers of his time and indeed forged much of his thought in line with many liberal ideals. Situating Nietzsche in the political context of his time helps readers to locate and bring Nietzsche to life in our present day when the debates between liberal and socialist conceptions of justice, equality and emancipation remain ever pertinent questions.

Some more context:

What made Nietzsche’s reactionary political views sympathetic to liberalism were their mutual disdain for socialist leveling and equality. This similarity led Nietzsche to endorse many of the same pro-imperial and anti-egalitarian sentiments that liberals of his time adopted. We must read Nietzsche’s political thought in the wake of the Napoleonic conquests of Germany for which the German liberal establishment agreed that the influence of the French ideals of egalitarianism and equality were foreign impositions on German culture, stripping it of its vitality

TokenBoomer ,

Thanks for the context.

freshcow , in 'Disturbing' recordings from inside child-predator sting shows police, MAGA operatives ignoring laws

I think the implications are pretty clear when you read between the lines of painting your political enemies as pedophiles. It’s a very easy way to rile people up into a lynch mob. Here’s the fascist playbook on this: target a minority (LGBTQ in particular) as some kind of deviant or predator, legitimize vigilante violence against this group, extend that to the next group or anyone who tries to defend the first group. Rinse and repeat until you are able to consolidate power and successfully kill or imprison your political enemies with impunity.

sandalbucket , in Google is close to making its biggest acquisition ever | CNN Business

Wiz scans clouds for “vulnerabilities”, and sometimes provides remediation advice. For example, if a vm’s kernel is outdated, it might recommend “sudo dnf remove —purge kernel”. And yeah, there sure won’t be any vulnerabilities after that.

It also complains about anything internet facing - including intentionally internet facing services - but that’s another rant for another time.

frezik , in 'Disturbing' recordings from inside child-predator sting shows police, MAGA operatives ignoring laws

You gotta make an effort to go up against child predators and manage to come out looking like the bad guy.

Gumbyyy ,

Sounds like there was only 1 actual predator and dozens of people they’re just baselessly accusing or being predators. And the 1 predator will easily get any potential charges laughed out of court if it ever even gets that far.

n1ck_n4m3 , in Donald Trump Does Not Get Post-Shooting Poll Boost
@n1ck_n4m3@lemmy.world avatar

Repeat after me:

**Polls are bullshit. Polls have always been bullshit.**Polls only real impact is to allow people to manipulate statistics to lull voters in a false sense of confidence or security in order to stop them from voting.

Ignore the polls, especially the polls that say your side is winning or the other side is losing. Polls are a very, very effective way to convince voters to stay home without ever asking them or telling them to stay home.

some_guy , in Elon Musk says SpaceX and X headquarters moving to Texas, blames California trans student privacy law

I hope this move bleeds talent and destroys both companies. I mean, I get that X already probably lost everyone who could get a different job (making people on visas hostages) but this should empty out the last of those who have the ability to leave and haven’t done so already.

tlou3please , in Jack Black axes tour over bandmate's Trump comment

I don’t think the comment was appropriate but I also don’t think it was really necessary to cancel the tour over it. It was a joke made in poor taste. Worth an apology? Sure. But this seems like an overreaction.

Kalkaline ,
@Kalkaline@leminal.space avatar

It’s worth a super sarcastic apology.

Lizardking13 ,

It’s noteworthy that it doesn’t appear black canceled the tour just out of nowhere. I think they were getting pressure from the government based on what I’ve read.

psmgx ,

From which government? The Aussies?

Lizardking13 ,

Yes. Apparently a single senator from the above users comment.

xenoclast ,

And the person who owns all the media in both those countries

fine_sandy_bottom ,

Nah that was just one senator from a rogue far right party that likes to get attention by making ridiculous statements.

They do not represent the government and are not in a position to apply pressure.

Lizardking13 ,

Not like I understand Australian politics but one senator could be an influence.

fine_sandy_bottom ,

“could be” is doing some heavy lifting there.

Yes one senator can be an influence in very specific and unusual circumstances. Not in this case.

Lizardking13 ,

How could you know this so definitively?

fine_sandy_bottom ,

I guess it’s just the australian political landscape, which I don’t expect you to care about very much, suffice to say this guy is pretty far removed from the people who can actually make decisions or exert influence about who can be in Australia.

He’s a senator. No one in the senate has any formal interactions which the executive branch like immigration personnel.

He was part of a party called United Australia Party which was a far right protest party. I say was because he was the only candidate that got any traction and his party was disbanded.

He only got elected because he received a bunch of “preferences” from another party that didn’t quite get enough votes to win the seat.

All of this means that formally his only job is to make comments about proposed laws. He does vote on laws but he’s not part of a bloq so no one cares about his vote. Informally it means he doesn’t have any capital - he’s a barely tolerated pariah. Next election he will be lost to the passage of time.

His only play is to make headlines by making outlandish assertions, like “JB should be deported”, to increase his brand recognition when he inevitably retires from politics to pursue a lucrative career in financial planning or some such.

Lizardking13 ,

Interesting. I had no idea, thanks for the in depth explanation. So in this case it probably played no or very little role. Things are just often more murky than we make them seem when commenting online is more the general idea I was trying to convey.

vxx ,

The fact they cancelled the tour and that he split with his manager, makes me believe it wasn’t that harmonic anymore and it was the final straw.

If not, I agree it was a massive overreaction.

Inciting violence is not appropriate, but he could’ve easily just said he should’ve kept it to himself and move on.

Maybe he feels he can’t be a showman and be all fun when democracy is at stake.

todd_bonzalez ,

People keep acting like Jack Black is punishing Kyle for being offensive, rather than trying to avoid a mass shooting at a Tenacious D concert after his bandmate endorsed political violence.

It’s only in overreaction if you’re not worried about your life, or the lives of your fans.

skeezix ,

Australia is not the US

todd_bonzalez ,

He’s on tour and he cancelled everything until October.

From what I understand the next scheduled show in Ohio is still not a sure thing.

givesomefucks , in Nearly two-thirds of Democrats want Biden to withdraw, new AP-NORC poll finds

Beating trump is more important than Joe Biden being president.

Especially when most of his time in office he wouldn’t stop talking about how powerless he is as president and how if anyone thought he could accomplish anything it just meant they’re ignorant.

So like, what’s the benefit of insisting it’s Biden when he’s not who voters want?

It just seems like a terrible risk for zero gain.

If what matters is the House and Senate, then we need a charismatic presidential candidate who helps Dems down ballot.

SatansMaggotyCumFart ,

Biden has been the best president since Carter, and maybe before that.

eran_morad ,

Doesn’t matter. Only thing that matters is to win enough mindfucked undecideds in a few states. You must accept the reality that in our perverted system, substance is but one factor, and often ancillary to showmanship. Politics is not an intellectual endeavor. It’s mainly bullshit. That’s why trump is winning.

takeda ,

Actually, he accomplished quite a lot without having control of Congress and 6-3 activist SCOTUS.

And no, Manchin and Sinema didn’t give Democrats control of the Senate in 2021-2022 and changed parties since then.

Trump’s only success with full control of Congress was to pass the horrible tax bill.

Biden’s also extremely successful on the foreign policy. Not only he reunited NATO (Putin attacked Ukraine, because he was convinced there’s no way he can do it), but also got two additional members to join, who historically were neutral.

Biden’s major weakness is that he doesn’t broadcast his successes well and media doesn’t do that either for him. The only time he successfully did mention his accomplishments was during state of the union.

givesomefucks ,

And no, Manchin and Sinema didn’t give Democrats control of the Senate in 2021-2022 and changed parties since then.

You forget that in the 2020 election no one thought we’d get the Senate and all of his campaign promises were made under the assumption that it would be a Republican majority Senate he’d have to get stuff thru.

That’s what Biden signed up for.

Having less Republicans in the Senate wouldn’t make that harder.

So unless your argument is Biden lied from day one, I don’t see how what you’re saying makes anything better.

Or why there’s any benefit to Biden over anyone else.

What point are you trying to make for why keeping Biden is a good idea?

takeda ,

And he still did quite well. I was preemptively responding to people who say Biden had a majority in Congress, that’s why I started with “And no,”

So unless your argument is Biden lied from day one, I don’t see how what you’re saying makes anything better.

And I’m saying he accomplished a lot despite that. Not everyone is as successful, Obama screwed up a single payer even though he had super majority.

givesomefucks ,

And I’m saying he accomplished a lot despite that

And yet, you don’t seem capable of naming three things that Biden accomplished that any Dem Pres wouldn’t have known.

Weird…

some_guy , in Ex-Porsche Lawyer Sentenced After Throwing Her Newborn Out Window So It Wouldn't Disrupt Her Career

Defence attorney Malte Hoech, 53, presented a contrasting view, arguing that the incident was a tragic accident. Hoech claimed Jovanovic was unaware of her pregnancy and overwhelmed by the sudden birth.

So your client is intelligent enough to earn a law degree and achieve a high rank at a prestigious multi-national, but too stupid to figure out she’s preggers? Yeah, that’s believable.

This psycho should absolutely go to prison. But it’s possible she’s at least being honest.

some_guy ,

Interesting take. I’m open to it. Thanks.

DrFuggles ,

it actually is. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neonaticide?wprov=sfla1 has a bit to say on it, but doesn’t go too much into the root causes. The majority of cases as far as I understand it stem from the mother not wanting to accept that she is pregnant. This is a delusion, mind you, and if untreated, can have dire consequences as shown here. To mothers who are not adequately prepared for birth (because they, for whatever reason, have repressed their pregnancy), giving birth must be about as traumatizing as if I were to wake up tomorrow with a third leg (that wants to be fed).

The German-language coverage of this is also very hit and miss. most outlets, like here, put an emphasis on here being a Porsche lawyer, which is a) bending the truth somewhat for shock value (she’s a contract counsel for their financing subsidiary iirc) and b) completely irrelevant, as other outlets point out that this pathological behavior does not know class boundaries.
