Or worse, I can afford it but still can’t go because my wife can’t get the time off from work.
She had to get a doctors note to get 2 extra days off around the 4th to recover from surgery(!)
Surgery aside, I would have loved to have packed up this week and spent it someplace fun. My wife would have only had Thursday off. She got Wed, Thur, Fri only because her doctor told her employer to get fucked.
It’s not like I can go “Sorry honey! Headed to Vegas! See you in a week!” Well… not if I wanted to STAY married.
I really don’t get how you guys don’t properly unionize - especially with how many companies collaborate with European ones where everyone gets a minimum of 4 weeks of holiday guaranteed by law.
Not only that, she works for a billion dollar multi-national. I can’t tell you who, but you do know who they are. They even have union representation in other areas, just not hers.
That’s just an appalling situation for workers in the US. I work in the public sector and get 37 days off a year in vacation time. Admittedly, I work in the public sector and have a generous vacation deal, but it’s absolutely insane that workers in the US have a worse deal than many third world nations. My 37 days are working days, meaning I get almost 8 whole weeks of vacation time, on top of all the other regular bank holidays everyone else gets. The people there often seem to cherish your second amendment, but fuck, what tyranny are you guys waiting for. How about using them weapons for something else than suicides and accidental shootings?
all the other regular bank holidays everyone else gets.
…“everyone else” gets six, if they’re fortunate to land a salaried position: new year’s day, memorial day, independence day, labor day, thanksgiving day, and christmas day; all those other unobserved holidays are a thing for the public sector and finance only…
Alright. I was thinking about bank holidays here in Sweden. They’re generally off days for all workers here. You can choose to work, it’s not like everything is closed. But that’s a voluntary thing that your employer can’t force you to do, and which is handsomely compensated on account of it being a bank holiday. So people in the hospitality sector for example generally seem to like these shifts and there’s no shortage of volunteers to cover them. This is yet another area where the US system is raping US workers it seems.
American border is like prison border with the world being the prison. They are more concerned about people getting out of the prison than people getting in.
I won’t shill any credit union, but do not have your paycheck deposited into a commercial bank account. Have it deposited into a reputable credit union.
If a human did this, they would at least get a ticket with a fine, and have the violation recorded on their license which would be revoked if it kept happening. With the computer controlled car, the cop called customer support and was like, “hey you might want to look into it or something.”
I guess we can’t expect the people hired to protect capital to act against capital, but it’s still a bit disturbing.
you mean the devices that were stupid and no one wanted to buy because they were mostly useless, until suddenly 9/11 and the investors in the company Republicans demanded they be installed in every airport and bus station?
What’s surreal is being in a security line that is so backed up that the TSA on duty decide to tell people to keep their shoes on, and they open up the old fashioned metal detector to supplement the body scanner just to get people through faster.
Straight up confirmation that none of what they do matters.
I think the fine is for stopping during a TT, which clearly shows he is not actively racing. Regardless though, he and his local cheering squad did more positive for the sport than UCI ever will accomplish
The UCI could fuck up a wet dream. They actively harm the advancement of bicycling. Whenever the UCI starts administering a race type, that whole industry sector is permafuct. Disc brakes (regardless of how one might feel about discs) were banned for many years, resulting in delay of that technology despite the demand being there. Recumbents are a superlative bicycle design for most humans, but thanks UCI ban.
One of the main reasons gravel bikes have innovated so quickly is because the UCI has yet to stick its stupid nose into the races. But they’ll be along shortly to ruin the fun.
I would love to see the restrictions on frame design removed. I want more Lotus 108s and Cervelo P5Xs A recumbent racing league would be awesome, both fared and non-faring
A recumbent racing league would be awesome, both fared and non-faring
Oooooh! I’d watch this. Hell, I’d probably get back into racing. And I don’t even like recumbents that much (but still think they are the superlative design for most people). Without the UCI interference, we’d see some crazy cool stuff. I feel like the best we can get right now are the recumbent speed/distance records.
UCI takes a classic approach to racing so that the bikes don’t become the story, and that’s ok. Recumbents are weird, and nobody is stopping you or anyone else from creating a recumbent league. There has already been a gravel UCI WC since 2022 as well. Disc brakes weren’t universally praised immediately either - it took years for the pieces the fall into place, like carbon rims, wider tires, through axles, etc. and now everyone uses them. I really fail to see the harm here over “slow” adoption. You can’t please everyone.
The UCI’s stance on trans women is not transphobic. In line with other sporting federations, they have found that going through male puberty gives a person who transition afterwards an advantage over cis women. So, they have decided to have prioritise the fairness of competition. There are plenty of valid reasons for criticising the UCI, but this is not one.
they have found that going through male puberty gives a person who transition afterwards an advantage over cis women
Did they also find that short women have an advantage over tall women? How about lighter women having an advantage over heavier women? How about women having an advantage for having more muscle mass? How about people with androgen insensitivity syndrome? Or XX male syndrome? Intersex people?
My point is people will always have advantages somewhere (and there’s no clean place to draw the line); no two people are built the same, which means you absolutely can have – and do have – trans women (who went through a male puberty) with no advantage over cis women. The UCI won’t even allow those women on a case-by-case basis, which is absolutely 100% transphobic.
An actual solution is to divide racers up by skill class and stop gender segregating sports, and to stop caring so much about who wins, but that will never happen as long as money is involved.
Everyone cries about “fairness to women” and “fairness in women’s sports” when what they mean is “keeping sports exclusively for cis women”; trans women are women, but almost no one cares about fairness for them.
Trans women are women. And I will continue to treat them as such. But if we do not discriminate within competitive sports, most disciplines will be for men only. Because sexual dimorphism. Not good. So we have a league for women, that let most women compete for their medals and titles independent of the mens’ results. Much better. Not perfect, better. Are there enough for a third category? A fourth? Life sucks.
But you don’t have to care about winning over others. You can get on your bike and compete against your previous times. And you will probably do so in mixed company. In casual races, all competitors are often despatched together.
Or if you really want to compete, even though you don’t fit into the boxes neatly, try equestrian sports. The boxes are much roomier. The saddles are also much more comfortable, and your sex and gender does not matter.
Finally they’re treating opposite gender couples the same as same gender couples! Soon we will be able to ban love entirely for it’s inapropiateness! /s
