tenitchyfingers , in Lebanon, Kuwait Poised to Ban ‘Barbie’ for Promoting Homosexuality

Whatever. I’m sure Mattel is crying on the 1billion dollars the movie made.

fidodo ,

I don’t think the news story is that Mattel is losing a little money from a small market. I think the news story is the oppression

MonsiuerPatEBrown ,

The news story is marketing for the movie. Any moral stance depicted is to drive readers and thus ads for the magazine. It is all marketing.

luciferofastora ,

You mean the magazine would pay people to write a story people would want to read… only to make money for the magazine? Like, they’re doing it for profit, and not out of the goodness of their hearts? Next you’re going to tell me my grocer is only selling me food to generate revenue.

There’s a difference between “just marketing” and “buy this stuff, but also, turns out Lebanon has quite some distance to go in terms of human rights in general and gender equality in particular”. Companies can’t have morals, because they’re not a natural person, but the humans working for them can, and it’s not unthinkable for this story to be both: An expression of moral frustration on part of the journalist that also happens to be profitable for their employer.

tenitchyfingers ,

Of course. People who want to see it will see it, even if it means piracy. And that’s why piracy is inherently good and it won’t damage the company much so it doesn’t really matter.

@IzzyJ@lemmy.world avatar

“Who needs guns on the beach”

I’m trans. Id sooner never go. But if I had to, with the way things are going, you bet your ass I am afraid and would rather be armed

ArcaneSlime ,

Hell yes. Make guns a nonpartisan “nonissue.” Armed minorities are harder to oppress, and gun control disproportionately affects minorities in marginalized and overpoliced communities. One state just removed the requirement for pistol purchase permits because (as it was designed to be in the first place since it was a Jim Crow era law) racist sheriffs were denying black people’s permits, 60% of denials were to black people.

ycnz ,

Yeah, famously, the US doesn’t oppress minorities because of all the guns.

ArcaneSlime ,

There’s a reason California has so much gun control, and it is Ronald Reagan being racist in the 80’s because the Black Panthers were exercising their right to bare arms, because it was making it harder for the police to oppress them. In fact CCW and purchase permits were designed and are often still used as a way to keep POC from exercising their rights, as it makes them harder to oppress if they can carry. They use gun control to oppress those minorities, things like stop and frisk, or denying permits and charging them when they carry anyway. They enforce this gun control primarily in overpoliced marginalized minority neighborhoods, not in gated communities or majority white neighborhoods. Regardless of your intentions or perceptions, the real life effects of gun control are these, and it is harder to oppress a person/community/people who have guns than one who does not.

sin_free_for_00_days ,

While Reagan was racist and was responsible for a lot of bad shit in the '80s, what you’re talking about with the Panthers was in the late '60s.

marmo7ade ,

Yes! The only way America will solve the gun problem is if we keep escalating the problem to a critical point. You’re doing god’s work. Thank you.

Instead of strapping up, I simply don’t go to beaches where I’m afraid to be shot. There’s more than 1 beach.

reverendsteveii ,

just don’t go anywhere you’re likely to be shot. Like school, work, the grocery store, church, urban areas, suburban areas, rural areas, bars, restaurants, nightclubs, daycare centers…

Without even addressing the moral panic and domestic terrorism currently being whipped up against trans people the fact is that “just don’t go places where people are allowed to carry” is a bad solution even for the average person.

Noughmad , (edited )

As a trans person, would you rather go to a beach where nobody is armed, or to a beach where everybody might be armed?

Established_Trial ,

I’m not trans, but I’d rather go where everyone might be armed. Just because everyone is supposed to not bring a gun somewhere doesn’t mean there won’t be someone that does- how many shootings in the US happen in “gun free zones”?

Fract ,

Only in the US. When I go to the beach in my country, Australia, I’d never even consider the possibility of a gunman.

solstice ,

I’ll foolishly assume this is a comment posted by a human in good faith and not a troll or a bot.

Does fog of war mean anything to you? Go to a crowded place where everyone is armed. Person 1 is a baddie and kills person 2. Person 3 is a Good Guy and shoots person 1. People 4, 5, and 6 are also Good Guys With Guns and didn’t directly observe the original altercation, they only observed Person 3 shooting Person 1, and assume Person 3 shot Person 2 as well. People 4, 5, and 6, open fire on Person 3. They are bad shots though and the adrenaline dump makes them miss, so People 7, 8, and 9 get shot in the crossfire. At this point it is total chaos, everyone is either shooting at everyone else (fight), running in panic (flight), getting shot in the crossfire (freeze), or just shrieking their head off at the carnage in front of them (freak). Then the police arrive and shoot the survivors.

Congratufuckinglations, we now have a bunch of bodies and dozens of traumatized people because you morons couldn’t leave your fucking guns at home and enjoy the goddamn beach.

LordTrychon , in New school bus route is a 'disaster,' Kentucky superintendent admits. Last kids got home at 10 pm

Something I haven’t seen in the comments but is very important to the equation… Louisville has a very messed up bussing situation and has for years.

I’m not SUPER aware of the details, but that’s because I live on the southern Indiana side of the river (just miles away from Louisville). My wife moved over here years ago specifically to avoid this issue for her kid before he was in the school system.

Louisville has a long standing policy where there is some sort of lottery that chooses what school you go to, rather than your school being determined by your nearest available.

The idea was clearly based on good intentions… to ensure that kids from any neighborhood would have the same opportunities, etc etc.

However, in reality it is a nightmare. Louisville isn’t the largest metro area or the most sprawling, but still, trying to bus students from every school to every part of the county is ridiculous.

I think they made some changes in the past few years to make it easier to get a closer school, but again I’m not super up to date on it because it doesn’t affect me other than the bus routes being an issue every year and hearing about it on the local news.

It’s gotten worse and worse over the years though.

Again, I’m sure there are much more informed people with better info on this out there, but until they jump in I figured I’d add some pertinent info since this isn’t a local lemmy community.

JeffCraig ,

LastSprinkles , in With eyes on Taiwan, new China ban shows the U.S. may be learning lessons from mistakes with Russia

If we’re really learning from mistakes in Ukraine then Taiwan should be recognised as an independent country and admitted into a formal alliance. Not admitting Ukraine into NATO was the mistake we made there and it’s being repeated in Taiwan.

Rapidcreek ,
LastSprinkles ,

Yeah it would require congressional approval. But that’s not beyond the realm of possibility as there is bipartisan support for Taiwan in the Congress.

I’m doubtful that it would trigger a major conflict. More likely China would express public outrage but not do anything about it. But it has to be done swiftly so they don’t have time to react before it’s in force.

    freagle ,

LOL, so delusional. Taiwan becoming a formally recognized nuclear military base administered by the US would immediately trigger a war.

    LastSprinkles ,

Nuclear base… Talk about hyperbole. Hope the weather is nice in Beijing this August.

    freagle ,

Hyperbole? The entire US doctrine is nuclear first strike capability to eliminate MAD. Between the hypersonic missiles they said they wanted to place on Taiwan, the nuclear submarine, with warheads, that they recently docked in South Korea, the missile defense shields they have spent decades encircling Russia and China with, and deploying 60% of their entire navy into the Pacific Theater, exactly what hyperbole do you think there is here?

    LastSprinkles ,

I don’t really see how having a nuclear base in Taiwan eliminates MAD. Similarly having 60% of the navy in the Pacific. It seems to me these mostly work well in case of a conventional conflict.

    MagicShel ,

Hey, I 100% support Ukraine and financial aid for them, but I feel like this conflict runs the risk of distorting history. Ukraine has a very corrupt recent past and admitting them before they clean up their own house might well have just been a different kind of mistake. Hopefully we can be formal allies some day.

I don’t have an agenda here other than being kind to people who made decisions without the benefit of the hindsight we use to second guess them.

    LastSprinkles ,

Sure I agree when it comes to admitting them to the EU. NATO is only a military defence alliance though. If they’d been in NATO this war would never have happened.

    ChrisLicht ,

I’m wearing a St. Javelin tshirt as I write this, but NATO can’t have member countries with the levels of endemic corruption that have existed in Ukraine and are still being rooted out. Shit, Resnikov himself was seen to be only one step away from it in the past year.

    Gahedros ,

    What about Turkey?

    ChrisLicht ,

It’s a great question. FWIW, I am not sure that Türkiye would be admitted today.

    randint , (edited )

But the US is doing something called “stragetic ambiguity,” where they neither ally with Taiwan nor ally with China. China has repeatedly stated that the day Taiwan declares independence is the day they attack. However, if the US ever feels confident enough to actually establish diplomatic relationships with Taiwan, maybe that’s not a bad thing either.

    LastSprinkles ,

Yeah indeed strategic ambiguity has been the approach they’ve taken so far. If they decided to they could change the approach though. I think it’s unlikely China would carry out the threat if a formal alliance was actually announced since in that case they’d be starting a world war. I think it’s more likely they’d express outrage, protest and perhaps fly some fighter jets over Taiwan, take some steps short of actual war. My worry is that if the situation remains ambiguous China might conclude that the security guarantees are not real and that US would not respond. Having strong credibility there is essential for maintaining peace I think, especially if the intention is to actually respond.

    Stinkywinks ,

I think we should start calling these bluffs. Can’t let countries bully the world forever. Stop helping north Korea, add tawain to nato. Give them the finger.

    freagle ,

LOL China is a bully? Are you just ignorant of the last 200 years of history. Do you have any idea WHY the KMT managed to maintain a 40-year reign of terror on Taiwan? Why Hong Kong needed to be returned to China? Or why all Europeans were completely immune to Chinese law in living memory? Hint: it was because of a bully, and China was the victim.

    TheDarkKnight ,

Yep just straight up spell it with no mucking about. Put Taiwan, Japan, NZ, Australia, SK etc into NATO or its own equivalent and let the stakes be known. If you want WWIII, invade Taiwan. Or move on.
