flop_leash_973 , in Pastor alarmed after Trump-loving congregants deride Jesus' teachings as 'weak'

I told someone awhile back that in my opinion a lot of the people in positions of influence don’t really understand or appreciate the danger of playing with the type of fire supporting or indulging the ideas that Trump represents brings with it.

It is not as big a leap to go from supporting prosecuting women for having an abortion to save their lives to getting the idea that Governor Abbott has a weak bloodline, due to being in a wheelchair, and should be removed so he is not a drain on the state resources better used for the betterment of the strong as those supporters seem to think.

Essentially they severely overestimate the control they wield over the leopard that will eventually eat their face.

Taako_Tuesday ,

How the hell did I never know Greg Abbott uses a wheelchair

flop_leash_973 ,

Kind of makes his support for such hard right policies seem even more tone deaf doesn’t it? He is literally supporting something that it is not hard to see will come for him, and those like him.

No, it makes perfect sense. It’s along the lines of Clarence Thomas siding with getting rid of Affirmative Action even though he was a recipient of it. It makes perfect sense once you remember conservatives think they are special, and live by “Fuck you, I got mine.” They got theirs, and they do not at all care that people coming after them can’t get the leg-up they got.

“They” created a monster and now the chickens are coming home to roost.

Fungah ,

And the chickens are flying around the monster, swooping and diving and pecking, and they created a monster but they didn’t pay the extra $4.95 for the commemorative safety goggles, a decision they’ll truly regret when they realize that the monster isn’t a monster at all, it’s a mirror they’re thenmonster!s… No the monster was behind the mirror but it’s a leopard and it’s eating their faces.

To the modern right, Jesus was a beta cuck socialist. Healing the sick?? Loving thy neighbor?? Sounds like some LIBERAL BULLSHIT 😤 (my wife left me)

flossdaily , in ‘Corrupt as hell’: Clarence Thomas faces fresh calls to resign after more billionaire gifts revealed

If Republicans had even a single ounce of integrity, they would be demanding he resign.

But they would rather have an openly corrupt judge that votes their way on every single than to allow Biden to nominate an honest moderate.

I’m not sure about the majority but my dad has this mentality that liberals are the corrupt ones and you’re delusional if you think Republicans are corrupt in any way.

Showing him this new from many different sites only results in “the libs are behind this and just trying to discredit the other side.” (But an article on a conservative site that can’t be found anywhere else is completely legit) There’s no reasoning with that type because reasoning isn’t there anymore.

flossdaily ,

I’m sorry that this cult has poisoned your dad.

My best friend of 20+ years has also had the Trump lobotomy.

KroninJ ,
@KroninJ@lemmy.world avatar

On the plus side, I haven’t had a great relationship with him my whole life. I’ve cut him off from my life several times and the only reason I started talking to him again was because he seemed different (from previous issues between us) at his dad’s funeral. He has at least followed my stipulations I set if he wants to continue to talk to me.

Sorry to hear about your best friend. Hopefully it’s still one of those good relationships ‘as long as politics don’t come up’ kind of thing. But that’s a difficult one nowadays.

If they had integrity, he wouldn’t have been appointed in the first place.

LastSprinkles , in With eyes on Taiwan, new China ban shows the U.S. may be learning lessons from mistakes with Russia

If we’re really learning from mistakes in Ukraine then Taiwan should be recognised as an independent country and admitted into a formal alliance. Not admitting Ukraine into NATO was the mistake we made there and it’s being repeated in Taiwan.

Rapidcreek ,
LastSprinkles ,

Yeah it would require congressional approval. But that’s not beyond the realm of possibility as there is bipartisan support for Taiwan in the Congress.

I’m doubtful that it would trigger a major conflict. More likely China would express public outrage but not do anything about it. But it has to be done swiftly so they don’t have time to react before it’s in force.

    freagle ,

LOL, so delusional. Taiwan becoming a formally recognized nuclear military base administered by the US would immediately trigger a war.

    LastSprinkles ,

Nuclear base… Talk about hyperbole. Hope the weather is nice in Beijing this August.

    freagle ,

Hyperbole? The entire US doctrine is nuclear first strike capability to eliminate MAD. Between the hypersonic missiles they said they wanted to place on Taiwan, the nuclear submarine, with warheads, that they recently docked in South Korea, the missile defense shields they have spent decades encircling Russia and China with, and deploying 60% of their entire navy into the Pacific Theater, exactly what hyperbole do you think there is here?

    LastSprinkles ,

I don’t really see how having a nuclear base in Taiwan eliminates MAD. Similarly having 60% of the navy in the Pacific. It seems to me these mostly work well in case of a conventional conflict.

    MagicShel ,

Hey, I 100% support Ukraine and financial aid for them, but I feel like this conflict runs the risk of distorting history. Ukraine has a very corrupt recent past and admitting them before they clean up their own house might well have just been a different kind of mistake. Hopefully we can be formal allies some day.

I don’t have an agenda here other than being kind to people who made decisions without the benefit of the hindsight we use to second guess them.

    LastSprinkles ,

Sure I agree when it comes to admitting them to the EU. NATO is only a military defence alliance though. If they’d been in NATO this war would never have happened.

    ChrisLicht ,

I’m wearing a St. Javelin tshirt as I write this, but NATO can’t have member countries with the levels of endemic corruption that have existed in Ukraine and are still being rooted out. Shit, Resnikov himself was seen to be only one step away from it in the past year.

    Gahedros ,

    What about Turkey?

    ChrisLicht ,

It’s a great question. FWIW, I am not sure that Türkiye would be admitted today.

    randint , (edited )

But the US is doing something called “stragetic ambiguity,” where they neither ally with Taiwan nor ally with China. China has repeatedly stated that the day Taiwan declares independence is the day they attack. However, if the US ever feels confident enough to actually establish diplomatic relationships with Taiwan, maybe that’s not a bad thing either.

    LastSprinkles ,

Yeah indeed strategic ambiguity has been the approach they’ve taken so far. If they decided to they could change the approach though. I think it’s unlikely China would carry out the threat if a formal alliance was actually announced since in that case they’d be starting a world war. I think it’s more likely they’d express outrage, protest and perhaps fly some fighter jets over Taiwan, take some steps short of actual war. My worry is that if the situation remains ambiguous China might conclude that the security guarantees are not real and that US would not respond. Having strong credibility there is essential for maintaining peace I think, especially if the intention is to actually respond.

    Stinkywinks ,

I think we should start calling these bluffs. Can’t let countries bully the world forever. Stop helping north Korea, add tawain to nato. Give them the finger.

    freagle ,

LOL China is a bully? Are you just ignorant of the last 200 years of history. Do you have any idea WHY the KMT managed to maintain a 40-year reign of terror on Taiwan? Why Hong Kong needed to be returned to China? Or why all Europeans were completely immune to Chinese law in living memory? Hint: it was because of a bully, and China was the victim.

    TheDarkKnight ,

Yep just straight up spell it with no mucking about. Put Taiwan, Japan, NZ, Australia, SK etc into NATO or its own equivalent and let the stakes be known. If you want WWIII, invade Taiwan. Or move on.

LordTrychon , in New school bus route is a 'disaster,' Kentucky superintendent admits. Last kids got home at 10 pm

Something I haven’t seen in the comments but is very important to the equation… Louisville has a very messed up bussing situation and has for years.

I’m not SUPER aware of the details, but that’s because I live on the southern Indiana side of the river (just miles away from Louisville). My wife moved over here years ago specifically to avoid this issue for her kid before he was in the school system.

Louisville has a long standing policy where there is some sort of lottery that chooses what school you go to, rather than your school being determined by your nearest available.

The idea was clearly based on good intentions… to ensure that kids from any neighborhood would have the same opportunities, etc etc.

However, in reality it is a nightmare. Louisville isn’t the largest metro area or the most sprawling, but still, trying to bus students from every school to every part of the county is ridiculous.

I think they made some changes in the past few years to make it easier to get a closer school, but again I’m not super up to date on it because it doesn’t affect me other than the bus routes being an issue every year and hearing about it on the local news.

It’s gotten worse and worse over the years though.

Again, I’m sure there are much more informed people with better info on this out there, but until they jump in I figured I’d add some pertinent info since this isn’t a local lemmy community.

    JeffCraig ,

They just need to spread the money out to all schools per capital, not spread the children out lmao.

Our education system is a huge joke.

Moobythegoldensock , in 6 year old who shot teacher bragged about it

We need to arm all the teachers. And all the students. And all the guns. And all the bullets: they can carry little baby guns with more guns in them.

Only after every atom in the universe is a gun will we ever be safe from guns.
