Oh hey, we have a very similar case going on in the UK too.

MicroWave OP , in FBI arrest California police officers involved in racist text messages scandal
@MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

The arrests come after revelations that Antioch officers sent violently racist, misogynistic and anti-gay text messages between 2019 and 2022. The hateful messages emerged as part of an inquiry by federal officials and local prosecutors investigating claims of widespread** civil rights violations, excessive force and falsification of records**.

Officers were exposed referring to Black people as “gorillas” and bragging about beating up local residents and fabricating evidence. Some group texts included supervisors. In April, it was revealed that more than 45 officers, representing nearly half of Antioch’s police department, were implicated in racist behavior.

coffee_poops , in 'Hell on wheels': Teen convicted of crashing car at 100 mph, killing boyfriend and friend

Guys, she’s 18. Her brain isn’t even fully developed yet. She’s not even capable of fully rationalizing the consequences of her actions yet. I know she did something awful but I don’t think there are any winners here.

OskarAxolotl ,

You don’t need a fully developed brain to understand that intentionally driving into a brick wall at 100 mph will have severe consequences.

  • OskarAxolotl ,

How much of that do you need to assess whether driving into a brick wall at 100 mph is a bad idea. How did this person even stay alive until 18?

    Stumblinbear ,
    @Stumblinbear@pawb.social avatar

    They’re 18, not retarded. It’s 100mph and a brick wall.

Not being fully developed ≠ nonexistent

We shouldn’t remove all consequences for your actions until you turn 25. Young people are a little dumber, but they’re not infants. They should still be able to think for themselves.

    OceanSoap ,

I’m sure she did understand, she probably didn’t think she’d survive, though, so any consequences of that possibility probably didn’t occur to her at all.

    jarfil ,

According to Western societies, 18 is when the “fully developed” switch flips from OFF to ON, not a minute earlier or a minute later.

BrisvegasLukass , in Drinking water of millions of Americans contaminated with ‘forever chemicals’

Bottled water is the fucking problem. Don’t whinge about anything climate based if you recommend plastic. The disconnect on solving contaminated water with plastic water bottles s mind boggling.

    hh93 ,

If you don’t have a water source very close plastic beats glass very fast.

Glass is so much heavier that the additional fuel to transport it over 100km offsets whatever emissions plastic creates.

This is the classic “no good option” dilemma depending where you live.

In many parts of Europe you can buy the locally sourced water from glass bottles - but it doesn’t make much sense buying glass bottles for climate change reasons otherwise

    lud ,

I don’t know much about this but wouldn’t a water filter be better?

We have great municipal water so I have never used one, but it at least sounds better than buying bottled water.

    hh93 ,

Yeah using the local tap water and adding a water filter if necessary is the best option for sure

    grue ,

What are you even talking about? The moral “dilemma” here isn’t between water bottled in plastic vs. water bottled in glass; it’s between water bottled in plastic and water piped through the damn tap. Tap water is unambiguously superior and it’s not even close.

    hh93 ,

    If that’s drinkable then definitely

Not sure if I’d trust a 20€ Amazon filter with US tap water in some regions

ghostBones , in Trump cancels news conference to release report on 2020 election

There seems to be a long established pattern where Trump daydreams about irrefutable and overwhelming exoneration and then decides it should be true and tells everyone about it. Narcissists have a tendency to create shitstorms and then daydream about escapist fantasies to evade the consequences they always create for themselves.

    catfish ,

    the russian playbook

    makyo ,

It’s a proven pattern as well - the braindead followers see him tweet the words ‘REPORT’ and ‘EXONERATION’ and they assume it’s a a done deal and don’t bother to follow up to verify the actual evidence.

If it was Putin I’d say it’s probably an intentional strategy, but with Trump it’s probably more lizard brain instinct gained from his years of grifting.

    jonne ,

I mean, it’s your classic real estate sales person. You’ll say and do anything to make the sale, and afterwards you try to weasel out of your fancy promises.

    echodot ,

Normally with a state agency it all comes tumbling down the moment you actually view the property.

Oh I see, so when you said picturesque what you meant was microscopic and when you said a lively night life what you meant was it’s in the middle of a gang turf war.

    jonne ,

But when you’re selling a building that’s yet to be built, people hand you money without you having to show anything. It’s why developers are such scumbags.

“Rather than releasing the Report on the Rigged & Stolen Georgia 2020 Presidential Election on Monday, my lawyers would prefer putting this, I believe, Irrefutable & Overwhelming evidence of Election Fraud & Irregularities in formal Legal Filings,” Trump said on Truth Social.

His lawyers assured them they’re totally going to put it all in their formal report, and then promptly tossed it in the shredder when he left the room.
