steltek , in Lyft and Uber say they will leave Minneapolis if the mayor signs a minimum wage bill for drivers

Conveniently, biking will be a good alternative again once the bike lane isn’t full of illegally parked rideshare cars.

(Not from MN but Ubers are a plague for safe city biking where I am)

Burn_The_Right , in Belarus would use nuclear weapons in the event of 'aggression,' Lukashenko says | CNN

If pootin wants to use belarus as a proxy, maybe it would be a good idea to call that bluff and annihilate his proxy’s launch abilities (which may include Lukashenko).

“Jeez pootin, you’re buddy was threatening to kill us all. He was totally unhinged. Glad you’re not like him!”

HuddaBudda , in Fulton County Sheriff's Office investigating threats to grand jurors who voted on Trump indictment
@HuddaBudda@kbin.social avatar

If I was a very smart guy....

I would leak a memo of fake jurors (Undercover FBI Agents), and cast my line and start fishing to see who was dumb enough to try something stupid.

Or

I would leak the memo of real jurors (Covered by FBI Agents already) , and cast my line and start fishing to see who was dumb enough to try something stupid.

Moral of the story: don't try something stupid.

Bipta ,

Sure, but it's expensive to protect the former grand jurors 24/7 so it seems rather likely they'll be targeted and find themselves without adequate protection.

HuddaBudda ,
@HuddaBudda@kbin.social avatar

True.....

But,

If I have 30-80 agents on salary, what else are they supposed to do with them? Sure they could sit behind a desk, maybe operate separate sting operations that might net 1-2 maybe 3 criminals over the course of weeks - months.

Or I could pile everyone that wants to overthrow democracy into a few easily observable areas and wait to see who drives out to take the bait?

theKalash , in Nurse Lucy Letby guilty of murdering seven babies on neonatal unit

I always wonder, how many single-time murderers are there for every serial killer? Like how many nurses, doctors or other people with an opportunity just took and murdered once. How many people might get away with that?

Every serial killer has his first kill … but how many people have a first kill and then think … nah, I’d rather not do that but don’t get caught.

BeMoreCareful ,

I want the say that I saw a statistic saying that murder clearance rates were only about 50%. That coupled with wrong conviction rates makes one wonder.

I genuinely don’t know if that’s true or not though.

Bipta ,

I once had an off duty officer threaten me by mentioning the low rate of solved, and even lower convicted, murders.

BeMoreCareful ,
Pretzilla ,

That’s the kind of thing the FBI is interested in hearing. Please report it.

HipPriest ,

Jesus wept... I'm going to take a punt and guess this was in America?

notapantsday ,

I mean… it’s pretty much impossible to know how many undiscovered murders there are. Yes, you can do autopsies on everyone who’s declared dead and then figure out how many of them were killed, but there are a lot of ways to kill a person that won’t show up in an autopsy, especially in a hospital setting.

Mediocre_Bard ,

You can kill someone in healthcare without it being murder. People just expect some people to die.

HipPriest ,

Accidents happen if course. If it was a preventable accident it could potentially be classed under incompetence, which is kind of the medical version of manslaughter depending on the situation. But proving that would probably require another professional whistleblowing on a colleague.

tron , in Lyft and Uber say they will leave Minneapolis if the mayor signs a minimum wage bill for drivers

While I think this should pass, don’t hold your breath. Mayor Frey will probably veto it. He’s a very moderate, business friendly Democrat and our governor also vetoed a similar bill from the state legislature earlier this year. Right or wrong, they are concerned that any disruption of Uber/Lyft services would be extremely detrimental to people who depend on them. Public transportation in MN is really bad and this is one of the major ways people get around.

archomrade ,

Having come from Iowa, the twin cities public transit is more than adequate for most commuters, and I strongly disagree with it being “really bad”. I’m honestly aghast at the suggestion that people might use Uber of Lyft with enough regularity to impact day-to-day commuting. My wife elects to use the public buses into downtown from the suburbs out of convenience, even though her work provides downtown parking if she wanted it. Not saying it’ll have NO impact, but frankly I don’t think it’ll have much of one.

agent_flounder , in Georgia school board fires teacher for reading a book to students about gender identity
@agent_flounder@lemmy.one avatar

The book, My Shadow Is Purple is one I have had the pleasure to read thanks to my wife’s job as a school librarian. The theme of the book is acceptance of differences, centered around a child’s parent who at first seems unaccepting but who surprises the child and the reader at the end for a happy, wholesome outcome.

The board went against the recommendation of a panel and fired her over this book, voting along party lines, for an offense that would not ever warrant termination in an even marginally sane world. To me, this strongly suggests that this is another case of extremist right wing / regressive people trying to silence and further marginalize people different from them. Out of fear and hate, as usual. The effect of which is detrimental to each of the children who are not gender conforming. I personally think this school board needs to hear from people opposed to their decision en masse. They have already gone too far with their harmful ambitions.

Reverendender , in Insight: Conservative think tank emerges as force behind DeSantis campaign

The heritage foundation is literally the Legion of Doom

jackfrost ,

Founded in 1973. It’s not a coincidence that we started to see establishment pushback organizations popping up in this time frame. Because in the 60s, people of color started voting en masse after generations of systematic suppression. The civil rights movement empowered them to express their political views like never before. The word “Heritage” in this context means “white people.” When they say “traditional American values,” they mean “no gays or mixing of the races.” When they say “limited government,” they mean “weak regulation.” When they say “individual freedom,” they mean “freedom from consequences,” specifically for white males. When they say “the war on drugs,” they mean “the war on black people and liberals.” And so on. They’re speaking in code, and their very name is a code. But it’s easily cracked if you’ve been paying attention.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

While I can definitely see Lex Luther being a conservative, I think he would hate the GOP because while he’s a bad guy, he took a pro-human stance against aliens like Superman and wouldn’t give a shit about wokeness.

Trying to copy his boss I see. “Threat? We’ll nuke you! Another threat? We’ll nuke you too!”

SeaJ , in 62% of Student Loan Borrowers Say They're Likely to Boycott Repayments

Boycotting only works when there is a noticeable financial hit to the producer. The federal government is not going to notice this. This can be good for campaigning though. Tell people that the reason they are not getting some forgiveness is because Republicans are doing everything they can to block it. Send out some flyers to everyone who has a federal student loan with a list of every Republican official who has had a PPP loan forgiven.

gullible , in Little Rock schools will allow African American class to count for graduation, in break from Arkansas state officials

That title had to be clickbait and it got me. Here I was fully believing segregation had come back to Arkansas in some capacity.

glimse ,

I’m assuming you thought they were allowing a class of African Americans to graduate…?

It’s not clickbait just because you misinterpreted it.

gullible ,

Vague misunderstandings and questionable titles have been utilized constantly by nearly all major print news entities for a full century. It’s the original clickbait, and colloquially known as a crash blossom. My paper on it was titled “Titled Media.”

girlfreddy ,
@girlfreddy@mastodon.social avatar

@glimse @gullible

Misinterpretation is the fault of the presenter, not the reader.

Speak or write to your audience.

glimse ,

@girlfreddy

The audience is people who have been following the news. Recent events are the context that make this make perfect sense. You can take a headline from 10 years ago and it won’t make any sense without context, too.

girlfreddy ,
@girlfreddy@mastodon.social avatar

@glimse

No.

gullible ,

It’s a crash blossom and intentional. Omitting words for news speak is specifically meant to promote ambiguity. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills, to have been downvoted for being completely right.

girlfreddy ,
@girlfreddy@mastodon.social avatar

@gullible @MicroWave @glimse @girlfreddy

You were right. The downvotes are from people who've become used to AI editorship, something I abhor.

gullible ,

I just realized, you’re from mastodon.social. How have you managed to follow what’s going on in this thread? I tried reading lemmy/kbin posts from mastodon and had a fair bit of trouble navigating their comments. UI update? App update?

girlfreddy ,
@girlfreddy@mastodon.social avatar

@gullible @MicroWave @glimse @girlfreddy

I'm on an app called Megalodon, a fork of the Mastodon app. It's on both the App store and Google play.

I love it. 👍

gullible ,

Thank you!

Arotrios , in FBI arrest California police officers involved in racist text messages scandal
@Arotrios@kbin.social avatar

I'm not surprised. Antioch/Pittsburg is right at the line where the Bay Area starts turning into the Trump country of the Central Valley, and despite its reputation of being a bastion of liberal thought, Northern California has a really ugly undercurrent of "good ole boy" racism the further you go east and north.
