JustAManOnAToilet , in Hunter Biden Agrees To Revised Plea Deal After Prosecutors Indicate Additional Charges

They agreed, the judge didn’t sign off so he’s now plead not guilty. Which, that was going to be one incredible deal if he’d been able to walk out with that.

OldWoodFrame ,

It’s the same deal, they just specified at the judge’s behest that the agreement only covers the specific charges the agreement was about.

Sure, blanket immunity for all crimes forever would be an incredible deal, but seems like that was never the intended deal considering how fast they just added whatever specific language the judge wanted to the deal and everyone was happy.

JustAManOnAToilet , (edited )

You should probably look at the latest, he left court after pleading not guilty.

Edit to add:

Also here’s the context of the first agreement breaking down:

Judge Noreika asked Justice Department prosecutor Leo Wise whether there is an “ongoing investigation here.”

“There is,” Wise said, adding that he could not tell the judge what the investigation was.

Noreika asked if the government could potentially bring a charge related to the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), to which Wise replied: “Yes.”

At that point, the original plea deal broke down. Defense attorney Chris Clark said he did not agree with that.

“Then there’s no deal,” Wise said.

Clark countered, “As far as I’m concerned the plea deal is null and void.”

Noreika asked if the government could potentially bring a charge related to the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), to which Wise replied: “Yes.”

This is eyebrow raising since it comes so closely after the release of the FBI file alleging claims by the owner of Burisma Holdings that there was a payoff to Hunter Biden.

I remember when our aparment’s old naked man got taken away. It brought everyone out and and we made friends and started hanging out regularly.

Thanks old naked dude! (jk he was a perv who knocked on women’s doors naked)

OldWoodFrame , in Naked man terrorizing Los Angeles-area apartment complex, residents say

Police, however, told the station that while the department is aware of the complaints, officers cannot arrest the man since no crime has been committed.

…the paragraph above says he is breaking in to locked private property and exposing himself, that seems like crimes. Can’t help but think this reporting is missing some key aspect of why this is an issue.

Kinglink ,

I was ready to say “I’m glad they’re not arresting someone for nudity.” and the claims he’s fondling himself might be the residents trying to embellish it to paint him in a bad light, but there’s literally a picture of him (or someone) climbing into someone’s window. How is that not an open and shut case?

Like it would be good for America to be less uptight when talking about nudity, but this isn’t the poster child of that.

Blackbeard , in Kevin Spacey acquitted of all charges in London sex offense trial
@Blackbeard@lemmy.world avatar

Wild. I remember back when these accusations first broke, someone linked to a since-deactivated Reddit account that commented with very serious accusations about him being a pedophile. The original comment was posted back in 2012/2013 and was heavily downvoted at the time because as far as anyone was aware Spacey was an upstanding gentleman. It ended with something like, “you may not believe me, and you may downvote this comment, but mark my words he will eventually be revealed as the sexual predator that he is.” Well the turnabout got a LOT of traction and people spent days/weeks trying to track the user down for some kind of cathartic vindication tour. They never surfaced, and the comment became legend.

Fast forward to today, and despite all the furor that was associated with these accusations, it sure looks like he was innocent all along. What a roller coaster this has been. Can’t imagine what he went through all those years, knowing (apparently) that the charges were bogus. Hope he gets some semblance of a career back.

zombuey OP , (edited )

Sadly he is likely permanently tarnished. It’s important to note in this case 3 of the people involved in the event alleged filed suit civilly before the criminal trial even began. That’s important because people generally wait for the outcome of a criminal case before suing so that they don’t have to reprove facts. This leads me to believe they all knew the allegations were false and were trying to collect before that was shown in court. As far as the Anthony Rapp case went I am unsure what happened there to it was almost immediately dismissed but they were 40 year old allegations. The was another case where a man claimed he was groped by spacey in a bar but they were dropped almost immediately by the DA.

Good. According to the Supreme Bigots, affirmative action is okay for the military because apparently diversity = better war. But the same doesn’t apply to the classroom? Hmm fishy. And it’s okay for the rich kid whose daddy went to a school, because how else are these schools with billion dollar endowments supposed to afford a new admin building?

Oh and we can’t forget the (un)related totally not hypocritical: religious freedom, but only for Christians. And bodily autonomy, but only for men.

Thanks, I heard of it yet couldn’t find the definition :

Since 1893, the legal definition of the foot in the United States has been based on the meter. The definition adopted at that time was the one specified by Congress in 1866, as 1 foot = 1200/3937 meter exactly (or 1 foot = 0.304 800 6 meter approximately).

And now USA will use :
1 foot = 0.3048m
…much more convenient 😆 !

myrrh ,

…a simple approximation is 1"≈2½cm, 40"≈1m, 5’≈1½m for quick conversions in your head…

@OrangeCorvus@lemmy.world avatar

But nobody waited for the verdict, they canceled him to the end of the galaxy and the internet told me he was guilty. Would an “Oops, sorry” be enough until the next stampede?

snooggums ,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

While he wasn't found guilty for these specific accusations, they were not the worst ones, and proving these cases from decades ago is pretty much impossible.

Court outcomes never clear someone of accusations that were not included in the court case and generally favor the defense. Spacey has so many accusers over such a long time period that the odds of him attracting that many false accusations is zero. There was both no reason to wait and no reason to think that being found not guilty is a free pass.

Is Cosby redeemed because a judge through out his conviction?

OrangeCorvus ,
@OrangeCorvus@lemmy.world avatar

While I admit that I don’t know the intricacies of Spacey’s case and all of his accusers, yes, if we can’t 100% be sure that he is guilty, I would abstain from canceling just because it’s trendy now. I know, rage baiting is the most effective tool these days.

There are monsters out there that take advantage of people in lower positions but there are also people that are innocent but because somebody is either jealous or wants to cause havoc, they get “canceled” for life.

I guess I am more cynical when it comes to things like this because I know a case(good friend) where a guy’s life was practically destroyed by a vengeful ex-girlfriend/co-worker.

girlfreddy ,
@girlfreddy@mastodon.social avatar

@OrangeCorvus @snooggums

I understand your personal experience forms the basis of your opinion but the fact is it only happened once to your friend, whereas Spacey has (and continues to) face multiple accusations from multiple people from multiple nations. That is not just a one-off.

snooggums ,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

I guess if you can't see the difference between 30 accusers over decades and one accuser, then the situations might look comparable.

Who was ever canceled over a single, non-credible, accusation?

Rom ,
@Rom@lemmy.world avatar

There’s no such thing as “being cancelled.” It’s called facing the social repercussions for your actions, and it’s literally always been a thing, even long before people whined about it. If people don’t want to associate with Spacey or engage with his works because they think he’s a creepy old rapist, that’s their right, and nobody is required to change their minds even after he gets cleared in a court of law.

InvaderDJ ,

Is Cosby redeemed because a judge through out his conviction?

This asks a question that I think is valid, but is fraught with emotion and history. Should it not mean that Cosby is redeemed if the charges are thrown out? It is extremely difficult to prove cases from decades ago, but does that mean that someone should face social consequences for charges that haven’t been proven in a court of law? Statistics say that most sexual assaults go unreported. Which is why there is a good and understandable push to believe people who report. But experiencing consequences based only on those reports also doesn’t seem to be the best.

mPony , in Giuliani Admits to False Statements About Georgia Election Workers

FTA

Mr. Giuliani, insisting that he still had “legal defenses” in the case, said that he continued to believe his accusations about Ms. Freeman and Ms. Moss were “constitutionally protected” under the First Amendment. He also refused to acknowledge that his statements had caused the women any damage — a key element required to collect a judgment in a defamation case.

It's such obvious bullshit to claim First Amendment protection for slander. His only path to victory is a GOP win and a pardon.

America, please do the right thing.
