Good thing we semi-legalized cannabis

But, we already have a vaccine against tuberculosis (BCG vaccine).

MeowZedong ,
@MeowZedong@lemmygrad.ml avatar

BCG isn’t nearly as protective as modern vaccines aim to be. The GSK vaccine in question in the article and similar ones in development in other research groups are aiming to improve protection over BCG.

It’s insane how common latent TB is on a global scale and it’s quite a challenging problem to solve from a technical standpoint.

AnUnusualRelic ,
@AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world avatar

OK, thanks for the clarification.

somethingsnappy ,

BCG is about 100 years old, and only ever worked at all in sometimes preventing infants/toddlers from getting a systemic TB infection. Source: exclusively worked in TB vaccine research for 14 years, and have had at least one TB vaccine project for the other 8 years of my career.

republicans are winning and winning and winning. maybe the biggest winners in history. they will keep on winning so much…like they will ask to stop the winning on weekends. else would just be too much winning.

I feel like no matter how much money they squeeze out of Trump he’ll make it back campaigning.

antizero99 ,

This is the sad truth. His followers will keep sending him money regardless of what he has done or gets convicted of. It will only stop when his entire organization is shut down and everyone around him is either in jail or banned from raising funds like this.

I think it will stop once he’s dead. Maybe. Hopefully.

Trump himself has been doing that for years. A large amount of “Trump” properties only lease the name.

The motherfuckers that do this should be charged with crimes against humanity.

Kage520 ,

Maybe but there aren’t any laws. Which means we need some good laws to make this not happen. Not sure where to start there, maybe, if your treatment you discover will not be pursued, you must surrender it to the government? And if you hide it instead then crime against humanity?

BeautifulMind , in Kevin McCarthy is ousted as House speaker in a historic vote pushed by conservatives
@BeautifulMind@lemmy.world avatar

As it stands the GOP seem unlikely to be able to elect a speaker. Speakers provide a list of people to become temporary speaker in case of emergency, so upon McCarthy’s ouster rep. Patrick McHenry became speaker pro tempore. Speakers pro tempore have only the authority to gavel sessions in and out, and to conduct votes for a new speaker.

Basically McHenry’s first act with the gavel was to order Pelosi out of her offices. What an asshole

hydrospanner ,

Right?

I’m no fan of hers, but jeez McHenry… let’s see, what’s more important: try to get the House back on track, or engage in petty, vindictive partisan bullshit?

I’m glad the House passed that CR, though I’m not sure they’ll have a new speaker before it runs out.

phx ,

Pretty, vindictive, partisan power-grabbing shit. The interim speaker shouldn’t even be able to do that

FYI:

On GrapheneOS, you can fully disable emergency alerts in Settings → Safety emergency → Wireless emergency alerts since we add a toggle for Presidential alerts. The naming of the alert types varies based on country which is determined by the carrier’s country code not language.

JPAKx4 , in More than 75,000 workers to strike at hundreds of Kaiser Permanente health facilities across U.S.

I hate that these places of healthcare use patients that are suffering as a barrier to striking. Proud of these striking workers, stick it to the system and get fair and equal treatment

It really is fucked up, same thing with teachers, they got into the industry to help people either survive or learn and you can’t get the time back in either instance when you strike

RaoulDook , in Biden to announce $9 billion more in student debt relief

$9 billion for 125k borrowers is $72000 per borrower

Would be nice if they would vanish the 40k in loans I have that I’ve been paying on since the Obama years. I’ve paid in far beyond the total amount I ever borrowed, while the compound interest just added it all back over the years. Progress has been very slow for me to pay that off, started payments with about 50k loans, after being ballooned up from the original principal from several years of economic hardship forbearance where the interest still gets capitalized.

mpa92643 ,

You should look into the Income Driven Repayment plan: studentaid.gov/idr/

It’s one of the new major programs from the Department of Education and can help a lot with reducing repayments while eventually being eligible for full forgiveness.

RaoulDook ,

That’s nice for those who it can help, but I don’t really need help making the payments. I’m just fed up with having to pay them at all since I’ve already paid back much more than I ever borrowed.

medgremlin ,

Biden’s new SAVE plan is set up so that any interest not covered by your IDR payment is not capitalized. It would probably also be worth your while to look into the forgiveness plans and terms because you might be able to reduce how much you owe based on previous payments.

HurlingDurling ,

I filled out the application and both the payment and interest doubled for me, not sure where is the benefit here. Hell, maybe I lucked out with my 30 year loan
