athos77 , in A central Kansas police force comes under constitutional criticism after raiding a newspaper

County Attorney Joel Ensby, whose brother owns the hotel where Newell operates her restaurant, was asked for [the probable cause affidavit] but said he would not release it because it was "not a public document". Source

So, if I'm following correctly, the Police Chief left his last job because of multiple sexual assault allegations, which was being looked into by the Record. And the owner of the restaurant (which only opened back in January] was trying to hide her DUI and illegal driving and was being investigated by the Record. And the County Attorney's brother owns the hotel and probably wants the restaurant to succeed to increase his profits. At this point. I think we're just missing the motive for the judge to have signed off on the search warrant ...

Ragnell , in Hawaii fires: 'Tourists swim in the waters we died in'
@Ragnell@kbin.social avatar

So one thing you have to remember about Hawaii is that Hawaii didn't CHOOSE to become part of the US. The US seized the place and forced the Queen to sign some paperwork turning the country over to them. And now a bunch of people from the country that took over your country come every year to party it up, even if there's been a disaster that killed a bunch of native Hawaiians.

This is why a lot of native Hawaiians have a big problem with tourists not just now, but ALL of the time. And if you say their economy is getting uplifted by tourism you will get an EARFUL about how foreign companies are what's actually reaping the rewards of that tourism, and that the land on the island is too expensive for natives to buy BECAUSE of the tourist industry snapping it up and how they'd basically rather be poor than occupied by a party industry that encourages outsiders to come down, treat people like servants and trash the place.

Now I can't do anything to solve this and neither can any of you. Just give them a break, guys. It's not easy to live in another man's paradise.

Dude it’s so sad… I am going to rant a little cause I am outraged with CBS! THEY KEEP SHOWING AND INTERVIEWING OPRAH!! Asking her how she feels and how this hurt her…Who the fuck cares about how Oprah feels about her mega million dollar house that was basically untouched while the community is hurting and many died!!! Oprah wasn’t even there, she flew in!! They keep interviewing Oprah and asking how she feels… Gail King on CBS tried to Martyr Oprah by saying Oprah went to buy some cots… How about opening that mega million dollar house for the community? How much money is she worth these days,? Why can’t she foot some of the bill for her community and actually step up if she feels so connected to the Island that she lives at 10% of the years for…

Stovetop , in Massachusetts passed a 4% millionaire's tax last year. Now every public school student is going to get free lunch

As a student who grew up attending Massachusetts public schools, this is fantastic news. Just wish that could have been me!

I used to bring a lot of boxed lunch in most days instead because school lunches were an unnecessary expense, but sometimes I’d buy school lunch if it was one I liked.

I don’t know if this applies everywhere, but my school district at least had a needs-based free lunch (and breakfast) program for those from low income families, but honestly all students deserve to eat a healthy and nutritious meal during school, which I am sure also takes quite a bit of stress off of parents.

solrize ,

The trouble with needs based programs is that students who receive the free lunch then get shamed by other students for being poor. Thus the movement to give the lunch to everyone. The cost per student is fairly low compared to the other expenses of running a school. Plus there are savings resulting from getting rid of the bureaucracy that figures out who is needy enough to get a free lunch, getting rid of the payment collection operation, etc, that partly offset the cost of the additional free lunches.

zephyreks ,

Then, idk, sell the lunch program on a semester-by-semester basis and offer subsidies for students who can’t afford it? It isn’t rocket science.

HikingVet ,

You’re right that it isn’t rocket science, but you are still making it more complicated than it needs to be.

The solution is like how the kids are now getting ot for free in that state because of the new tax.

lolcatnip ,

Ok, but why not just not? Just feed the damn kids and quit worrying that someone somewhere is getting something they could live without.

shuzuko ,

It depends on how you manage it. We had a system where parents could pay up front for your lunches, and students using that system got their lunches the same way the needs-based students did - the lunch lady just checked their name off the list for the day. You could guess at who had which, probably, but there was no way to confirm it.

That being said, you’re right about the bureaucracy and I’m all in favor of free lunches for all students regardless of their parents’ income.

Astroturfed , in A feud is heating up between Arizona workers and the world's leading chipmaker after the company claimed the US doesn't have the skills to build its new factory

Shortage of workers that will do 16 hour days with minimal breaks for third world pay is likely what they mean… The US is going to have to throw money at this to keep it on track because TSMC is going to have to pay a livable wage to support staff and construction workers. Which they aren’t used to.

steltek ,

I assumed that’s exactly why businesses were going to AZ and TX. “Business friendly” means tax credits, tax breaks, and enthusiastically anti-union/anti-labor government.

For me, it was the only explanation for why you’d make such a long term investment in a place that’s being threatened by climate change on multiple angles (water, extreme heat).

Especially_the_lies , in Illinois governor signs ban on firearms advertising allegedly marketed to kids and militants

I’m not going to say this is nothing–because as the ban on tobacco and liquor advertising showed us, it’s not nothing --but is the best we can do banning firearm ads???

Would be much more helpful to target the source of violence. Individuals with a stable job, a family, and healthcare are significantly less likely to commit serious crimes like murder.

malloc , in A police raid of a Kansas newsroom raises alarms about violations of press freedom

In America, there’s big city police. Then there is rural county police. The latter have the potential to get away with so much blatant violation of local/state/federal law. Checks and balances of power is nonexistent.

Doesn’t help that journalists and local newspapers have either vacated the region or bought by some VC/PE or larger media organization which guts the IJ division

SpezBroughtMeHere ,

Yeah there’s no corruption with big city police, is there? Internal investigations always come up with accurate conclusions and big city police are always held accountable for their actions.

Ageroth ,

Why can’t rural police be as corrupt or more, with even less oversight? How does that make city police not corrupt? What is the internal investigation process for rural cops, especially at the county sherrif level?

dogslayeggs ,

Reading comprehension isn’t your strong suit, is it? At no point did they say big city police weren’t corrupt. They just said that small town cops have the potential to be so much more corrupt.

Gutless2615 , (edited ) in A police raid of a Kansas newsroom raises alarms about violations of press freedom

And the 98 year old woman whose house they raided just died on Saturday.

macarthur_park ,

They likely meant “raided”

cowfodder ,

No, they meant raided.

Thank you. Pre-coffee reading comprehension issues here.

SCB , in A police raid of a Kansas newsroom raises alarms about violations of press freedom

While this is otherwise pretty great reporting, I found this sentence incredibly weird

Without the devices, she was left unable to stream shows onto her TV or use devices if she needed help, the newspaper said.

One of those things is significantly more important than the other, since she died shortly after this raid. Just a weird sentence overall.

fear ,
@fear@kbin.social avatar

Not that weird if we're talking about the quality of life of a 98 year old woman. "Healthy" at that age might look like spending a great deal of time in your favorite chair watching your favorite shows on the television. After almost a century on this planet, you get a little tired.

SCB ,

That’s a good point! Hadn’t considered it.

This is one of the extremely rare instances where I can almost sympathize with the man. Making inflammatory statements is his whole shtick. It’s all he knows. To him, being told not to make inflammatory statements is like being told not to talk at all.

(Personally, I’d be perfectly happy if I never heard from him again, but that’s beside the point.)
