Well now I’m confused cuz I thought Lemmy didn’t want a vindictive criminal justice system? If he caused problems by being unwell and is now well after treatment, why should he continue to be punished by being held against his will?

This post coulda fooled me

fosho , in Every single Onewheel is being recalled after four deaths

many interesting conversations here and looks like a lot of folks who ride these often without issue.

I’m a motorized skateboarder for well over 15 years now. I’ve ridden one wheels a few times and while they are intuitive and versatile they are also the most dangerous option in an already very dangerous category. it’s anecdotal, but all the worst injuries I’ve directly and indirectly confirmed were all from riding one wheels. I have lived on the edge and done plenty of dangerous things but owning a one wheel will never be one of them. the number of times I’ve had to be very nimble very quick would not have been possible on a one wheel. they simply lack the quick stability required to safely jump off from either foot and run out in any direction.

all that to say I’m not surprised that they have done some version of a recall and I’m wondering how they can legally sell them at all. yes, they are impressive vehicles and can be used relatively safely. but they are absolutely objectively more dangerous than 4 wheels.

Cleverdawny ,

I’d honestly just buy an electric 🛴 scooter first. A one wheel seems like a solution in search of a problem to me. But I’ve never been a skateboard guy.

What’s the benefit of a one wheel over a four wheel skateboard?

ManuelTransmission ,

I have one of each. I would say the benefit of the onewheel is a much cushier ride (giant, wide pneumatic wheel vs 4 smaller polyurethane wheels) and more maneuverability. The onewheel can tackle all types of terrain, which gives you a real sense of freedom while riding, whereas the 4-wheeler is pretty much limited to pavement/concrete (although you can put 7" pneumatic tires on 4-wheel boards that can accommodate them). Onewheeling is much more akin to that snowboarding feeling except you can pivot more since you only have a single point of contact with the ground, but there's not as much (any, really) of the lateral slide that you get on a snowboard, which can be both a plus and a minus.

If I want to go fast, I definitely grab the 4-wheeler. If I want to take a more leisurely pace/go explore offroad, I take the onewheel. I totally get and agree with what @fosho said about having to be very nimble & quick in a pinch, which is definitely true unless you're not going that fast on it to begin with. I rarely, if ever, exceed 15mph on the onewheel, but I can easily hit twice that on the 4-wheel board. Having to dodge something on that thing at that speed can be just as catastrophic as having the onewheel turn into a catapult at 15 mph. Both have their risks, and almost all of them can be tied to speed.

Cleverdawny ,

Thanks for the explanation!

bradorsomething ,

Fun fact, a sudden 30mph stop is about the same as falling from a 2-story building. (I used to teach PHTLS)

MooseBoys ,

Although it’s true you’re going about 30mph when you hit the ground from that height, it’s much more harmful because of the continued acceleration due to gravity. An equivalent scenario would be hitting a brick wall at 30mph which then immediately begins accelerating into you at 9.8 m/s^2.

Barack_Embalmer ,

I can’t help feeling a lot of these new motorized doodads are total deathtraps. I used to have a 40mph kaabo electric scooter and although it was mega fun, I sold it before it had a chance to kill me. Small wheels, poor geometry for stability, small caster angle, intoxicatingly high power - it’s a recipe for disaster.

fosho ,

the only benefit is the smaller turning radius. not something worth the much larger risk.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

They just look dangerous. I get that they’re auto balancing, but still.

Comment105 ,

I’m wondering how they can legally sell them at all. yes, they are impressive vehicles and can be used relatively safely. but they are absolutely objectively more dangerous than 4 wheels.

Cool take, I also have one:

MOTORCYCLES ARE DANGEROUS.

Motorcyclists should be legally prevented from buying, owning, and operating them. The freedom to put one’s own life at risk is not a freedom I believe in.

Everybody should be forced to choose between 5 travel options over land: Walking, bicycling (standard construction), car, bus, and train.

No other option should be permitted to the public, the public must be protected from themselves.

fosho ,

it sounds like you’re being sarcastic. but the reality is that the line exists somewhere. motorcycles, with seats and handles, are safer than motorized skateboards at the same speeds. you’ll have to come up with an example that better fits where you’re implying motorbikes do.

@Gadg8eer@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Honestly this is yet another reason to distinguish between photographic images/live video of a minor, and the disgusting but necessary evil of fictional material. With scams like this and new AI generation capability, I’m scared that even kids younger than 13 who haven’t even been forced to be involved in that photographic/video crap will be blackmailed using only their face and black market image AIs that draw on dark net CSAM.

By making fictional content legal while conversely increasing penalties for adults who exploit or attack REAL children in ANY way, not just sexually (because let’s be honest, this scam, kiddy porn and a lot of physical non-sexual violence towards children by strangers is about exploiting kids for the money and nothing else) you deprive the black market of material for an AI-based extortion plan.

The only other option is to make it illegal for anyone under 18 to post content on the internet at all, which would kill Lemmy and the fediverse, big tech, VR, online gaming and modern education.

hex_m_hell , in Baltimore CEO, 26, was killed by a repeat offender who should have never been on the street, officials allege

Any system that classifies things has two types of errors: false positives and false negatives. As you increase one you decrease the other. It’s as simple as that. So if you want to be 100% sure you put every bad person in prison you just put everyone in prison. Anything short of that you’re going to miss some. How many innocent people being tortured or killed by the system does it take to equal the value of killing or torturing one guilty person or even keeping one guilty person in prison for the rest of their lives?

Stories like this primarily exist to justify massive amounts of violence by the state to ostensibly prevent things like this… except they never actually do. The criminal legal system is the only system that uses its own failure to perpetually justify additional investment. As long as you have prisons, you will have this. You will have people who go to prison and become more dangerous. You will have people falsely imprisoned and even murdered. You will have police murdering people regularly and getting away with it in the name of “preventing” crimes like this. All you need to do is look at the clearance rates for police and the recitivism rate for prisons to see that they just aren’t worth the investment.

Until we shift to a public health model of public safety, this is guaranteed. Public health approachs like investment in early childhood education, restorative justice systems, and making mental healthcare more accessible have been proven repeatedly to have multiple times higher return on investment than police or prisons.

While revenge feels good and feels intuitive based on the history of the legal system, it doesn’t fit with modern psychology. Classifier based punitive legal systems must always either cause suffering by action or inaction because that’s part of the fundamental definiton of classifiers and punitive systems. Making sure people like this are in prison means making sure innocent people are also in prison. Is it worth it?

OneWomanCreamTeam ,

It’s disappointing to see you getting down voted like this.

Like sure, this guy probably shouldn’t be on the streets, but how many innocent people are we willing to imprison in the process of keeping people like him behind bars?

All the while our education, healthcare and social safety nets are being dismantled. All the things that actually help reduce violent crime.

$100 credit is miniscule in comparison to the price of the board. The whole situation can FOH. I don’t push my lil pint x past 16mph tbh, and even that can feel slightly sketchy depending on ground conditions.

PatFussy ,

Yeah, i have a GT and I rarely go past 16 either. I cant for the life of me understand how people on EUCs zip around going 30+mph feeling safe.

shroomato ,
@shroomato@lemmy.world avatar

EUCs that go 30+ mph have way bigger wheel diameter than OW, way more power, and a lot of recent models have suspension. Also wearing proper protection is essential.

They’re pro-power. They want to be the ones getting the kickback from policy decisions since whenever you change policy there are winners and losers - and the ones who bet on your side tend to win (because then they make you win in other ways. Big roles for your family, giant donations to keep you in office, business deals with your family so you get more income.)

They use:

  • Christian Guilt (#1 - “Pro Life”, WORK your life away because it’s what you’re supposed to do/REPORT YOUR NEIGHBORS FOR NOT LIVING A GOOD CHRISTIAN LIFE)
  • Fear (#2 - anti-vax/conspiracy shit/racism/“guns protect people”/“strong militaries save lives”/Anti-LGBTQ/‘THEY’RE COMIN’ FOR YER GUNS) and
  • Hatred (#3 - OTHERING: racism/we’re better than them/don’t work with the other side they’re the enemy!/The LGBTQ are gonna rape your kids!)

Fear and hatred are extremely powerful motivating forces and Christian guilt rolls into all of it. Presidents and most politicians can’t get elected without being publicly Christian, especially in conservative majority districts. I’m atheist myself, so forgive my improper categorization of denomination, but everybody knows what I mean.

The platform is not the same as the objective. The objective is to gain personal wealth and power and build a dynasty for your family. Helping your wealthier buddies out gets you a bigger share. There are certainly people who intend to get into politics without these opinions and attitudes but it’s far from the majority.

They’re pro-rich, pro-white, pro-christian, pro-capitalist, pro-oligarchy, pro-oligopoly, and pro-authoritarian.

They believe in a hierarchy based on class, race, genetics, health, sexual orientation, gender and gender expression, conformity, etc.

They believe this hierarchy must be strictly enforced and they act accordingly.

People with this world view don’t believe in equal treatment under the law or anything else. They vehemently oppose egalitarianism.

They want people lower on their made up hierarchy to have less, to suffer and to die.
