What the hell are these pieces of shit thinking?

yeather ,

They’re thinking it’s an easy payday for information that is probably going to be declassified anyways

Kecessa ,

They’re thinking “My employer doesn’t pay me enough for me to live comfortably, gotta do something about it…”

ccunning , (edited )

If they were struggling financially they wouldn’t have been granted a clearance in the first place.

After being promised more money from his handler, he said in another message: “I hope so! I need to get my other BMW back!”.

…maybe they skimped on the background check?

Warl0k3 ,

In theory sure. In practice, damn near anyone can get a clearance if their CO leans on the evaluating body a little. It’s ridiculous some of people we happily hand serious, hardcore state secrets to

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I remember people on Reddit talking about how these young enlisted guys would see their military paychecks and just buy shit right and left not realizing that they can’t actually afford it. So all these sergeants would have brand new expensive cars parked at their barracks (or however that works).

ccunning ,

Hopefully by the time they reach Sergeant they have more sense than that.

There definitely is truth to stereotype of privates buying Hellcats at the low low rate of 24.99% APY though…

Kecessa ,

You can get your background check and get in financial trouble after the fact and you can also get the job and realize that you’re underpaid for your level of responsibility… But it might have been greed plain and simple.

ccunning ,

Definitely - especially since they’re given clearances while they’re still practically kids and have no substantial financial history.

Basically, if you can get approved for a credit card with a $100 limit, you can get approved for a security clearance.

sp3tr4l ,

I was going to make a joke about a relatively young, new member of the military blowing their signing bonus as a downpayment on a car they can’t really afford, but uh… ate the onion.

There’s a reason many military bases have a ton of car dealerships in close proximity.

Pretty sure the router doesn’t have persistent memory, so unplugging it wipes anything useful.

Or for that matter, enough on board storage to store more than a few hours of logs at best. Logs generate obscene amounts of text per second.

I don’t really have a point, I’m just amazed that storage has advanced this far in my lifetime (80’s/90’s kid)

Zorsith ,
@Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Manufacturers for most devices are going cheap out on everything they can, see: cell phone industry and 3.5mm jacks, microSD card slots, etc. More storage ups the cost by quite a bit more than the storage itself actually costs for a new phone (but don’t worry, the phone manufacturer offers cloud storage (as a paid service)!

Storage has improved amazingly over a short period of time, there’s individual drives with more than 20 terabytes these days

SirSamuel ,
  1. I totally agree with you
  2. Dude! I bought 16TB HDDs for my NAS for less than $300 each. What the hell!? I was paying just over $16 per terabyte!

I’m an old fart from the 1.44MB disc days. I thought burning DVDs was cool. This is just…

I have hundreds of movies and shows. I could watch 8hrs a day for a year and not rewatch anything in my collection. It’s amazing. Rejoice in it

Sounds like she’s so toxic even to Tories that she perceives her only political future is on the far right. She’s still Liz Truss though, so she won’t even be any particular leader in that sphere, just a show pony to trot out as a convert, and maybe to hide in the back office if they actually gain enough power to have to do something administratively complex.

Aaron Levin Smith made a video on Shelleys whereabouts somewhat recently. IIRC she’s in a compound in California somewhere and she’s fine, by all outward appearances. I’m pretty sure she’s drinking the kool ade like the rest of them.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Appearances can be deceiving. They wouldn’t be hiding her in a compound for years and not responding to inquiries if everything was good between her and the CoS.

midnight_puker ,
@midnight_puker@sh.itjust.works avatar

From what I understand, she doesn’t seem to be held against her will. If Aaron Levin Smith is to be believed (being that he is a former Sea Org member, I’d say his credibility is good), she’s been seen out and about running errands and the like, but always with a security detail. There’s a decent chance that I’m misremembering something, though, so take this with a pinch of salt.

VirtualOdour ,

Yeah people are desperate to believe horror stories especially involving a woman but the reality is very likely she’s just a member of the cult living a relaxed and affluent life on the money they swindle.

ImADifferentBird ,
@ImADifferentBird@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

How many bets that “security detail” is as much to prevent her escape as it is to prevent anyone else from harming her?

dactylotheca , (edited )
@dactylotheca@suppo.fi avatar

Huh, interesting. Probably not “fine” though since if she’s at Gold / Int Base she’s probably being held against her will, considering that the whole base is sorta built around being like a prison compound and they even have private security “pursuit teams” to hunt down escapees.

Edit: not to say that everybody at Int is being held against their will, but it’s where eg. The Hole is so if somebody is being held, Int is probably where they’d be

@01189998819991197253@infosec.pub avatar

From the linked wiki:

According to some former members of Scientology, conditions within Gold Base are harsh, with staff members receiving sporadic paychecks of $50 at most, working seven days a week, and being subjected to punishments for failing to meet work quotas.[2] Media reports have stated that around 100 people a year try to escape from the base but most are soon retrieved by “pursuit teams”. Despite many accounts of mistreatment from ex-members, law enforcement investigations and lawsuits against Scientology have been thwarted by the First Amendment’s guarantee of religious freedom and the church’s ability to rely on “ministerial exemptions” in employment law. Scientology denies any mistreatment and calls the base “the ideal setting for professional and spiritual growth”.

anon6789 , in Trump campaign forced to pay North Carolina city $82k in advance for rally
@anon6789@lemmy.world avatar

the campaign paid in advance due to Asheville’s policy for short-notice bookings

This makes it sound more like coincidence than the city actually doing anything about Trump being a deadbeat.

Not complaining, since that is a fair policy to have, but it doesn’t sound like anyone is “sticking it to him” like the article makes it sound.

While it would be improper to prohibit Trump to speak just because he is crap, if he is a known deadbeat, I don’t know why some of these places don’t pass an amendment to prohibit anyone renting space while they currently have past due fees. If Trump or whoever it may be stiffs the city, it’s the residents picking up that loss, which is unfair to everyone.

ccunning OP ,

I actually put this paragraph in the description of the original post:

While the campaign paid in advance due to Asheville’s policy for short-notice bookings, Trump has a long history of failing to paycities for billed rally fees, leaving the White House in January 2021 with at least $850,000 in unpaid rally debt. Most of the bills are still unpaid, including more than $500,000 owed to the city of El Paso, Texas.

…but I guess the description doesn’t get included in crossposts (at least for some clients).

Not complaining, since that is a fair policy to have, but it doesn’t sound like anyone is “sticking it to him” like the article makes it sound.

I think the article is fair, but the headline is misleading.

anon6789 ,
