Xanis , in Child rapist Steven van de Velde weeps in first interview since Olympics outrage

Preface: I am not defending any action done, or the people that act on impulse or through desire.

If someone were to come to you and admit that they’re ashamed they like children in a sexually gratifying way, and stated that they never intend to act on those thoughts. How would you react?

I’m expecting kneejerk reactions. Surprise me, Lemmy.

answersplease77 ,

he did not only find minors attractive; he tortured and raped a minor for days nonstop, and got out after 1 year only. I’d hate to be that young kid watching her rapist get paid and cheered representing her country.

Xanis ,

I’m not asking nor defending that in any way. I am challenging the typical way people look at individuals who are attracted to minors. There are people out there who are ashamed and scared. They know it’s wrong. They don’t act, yet the impulse is there, and with it the anxiety. There is a stigma even against them, those who can find help in treatment, but are labeled right alongside those who commit atrocities and act on that desire.

It’s anger. Rightfully so. Often displaced.

Paraphilia is considered a disorder for a reason. It can be treated, and it is important to make the distinction.

I will die on this hill.

Viccarabyss ,
@Viccarabyss@lemmy.world avatar

You see the problem is you are posting this altogether by itself rational argument in an irrational place; under a post in regards to a convicted and known rapist, therein implying that you wish to excuse that rapists actions.

While it is correct that intrusive thoughts are simply human nature, acting on them is not. Harming children in any way is not acceptable and should not be excused. That distinction was already made here, as it wasn’t about intrusive thoughts at all.

Case in point, I believe that you are either very confused, very stupid, or rage baiting.

Xanis ,

I do this on purpose. Calm and rational people will attend calm and rational debates. I don’t actually expect to receive rational responses in a thread like this. My only goal is to plant the potential for a rational response when the normal reaction is anger.

So if I had to choose one, I’ll go with very stupid. :) I’ve been called worse by those who claim I am in support of the act of pedophillia, when I am in support of treatment of those who have not taken action, and against the label and stigma produced by our society which stops these individuals from coming forward.

As a culture we equate action and desire without action as the same thing in these circumstances. People then who might seek help do not for a very real fear of their life, potentially literally, ending.

I’ll take very stupid in a semi-relevant thread if it helps even one person decide to seek treatment. Because that decision will stop harm for themselves, and importantly stop potential harm to a child in the future. Whether harm was maliciously intentioned or not.

Dragomus ,

I am not sure where you got the torture for days from, there was none of that mentioned in the case, nor what he was sentenced for.

he raped her in a motel over several days.

I’d tell them to get help from a professional.

People can’t choose who they’re attracted to, but they are responsible if they ever act on it.

If society wants to truly protect children, we need to ensure paedos don’t become abusers/rapists. That means creating an atmosphere where people can feel more comfortable going to get the help they need.

Xanis ,

Yes, precisely. Thank you. This is a charged topic and because it’s so culturally brittle, I feel we must be more willing to have these discussions. Even if there is never a good time nor place to do so.

Not only is this kind of view dangerous and prejudiced, it is quite simply not supported by the data.

    I hope people dont believe you the next time you claim that something deplorable happened to you.

    Then you will likely argue that people should start bybassuming you might be telling the truth and look at evidence and investigate the case before determining that you were telling the truth or lying.

    Your tendency to think a woman is lying for money when making claims of rape is the problem women face today. And have always faced, for that matter.

    We dont shoot first and ask questions later. If she is lying, then it will come out when scrutinised. If she isnt lying then its a damn good thing we didn’t just brush her away isnt it…

    TommySoda ,

    Unfortunately some people don’t have a choice. The only grocery stores near me are Kroger or Albertsons. I have to drive over an hour to get any other options.

    But at the same time, even though I only shop for two, it might end up being cheaper to drive an hour and a half to Costco if shit keeps going the way it is. When you have to pay over $100 on less than a week of groceries, gas prices seem quaint in comparison.

    And with the Kroger/Albertsons merger likely imminent considering they announced all the stores in my city they’re going to close or sell off, it’s likely to become the norm and even if it’s deemed illegal, the fines won’t be enough to matter until they can pay to make it legal. It’s not like they can be shut down if they’re the only grocery stores.

    So now can we admit that voting fraud is a thing? Can we get voter ID?

    Gsus4 OP ,
    @Gsus4@mander.xyz avatar

    It’s normal to require an ID card in EU countries to vote, but e.g. in the UK they never asked for it, as long as my name was on the list (there are no national ID cards there).

    UnfortunateShort ,

    I was baffled when I heard that in the US, you can’t just go somewhere and vote. Like, it really is that simple here.

    Gsus4 OP ,
    @Gsus4@mander.xyz avatar

    But you have to register beforehand, right? And use some form of ID or a Name+address combo that makes it impossible to impersonate you to hijack your vote.

    vovo ,

    The United States is one of the few democracies in the world where the government does not take any responsibility in registering its citizens. This one-of-a-kind, self-initiated voter registration process acts as a major barrier to voter turnout and leads to often- inaccurate voter rolls. In contrast, the international norm is a process of government-mandated automatic voter registration of every citizen who reaches voting age. This report explores how other major well-established democracies (Canada, Australia, Sweden, Italy, New Zealand and others) concretely manage to build comprehensive, inclusive, accurate voting rolls that leave no voters behind while ensuring a high level of privacy.

    PoorlySketchedIdiot ,

    In the UK, we are required to show our legal ID to vote (The tories brought it in a few years ago). Our driving licences are national ID cards, practically.

    PS: ok, you’re right, “some” ID is required since 2023 www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-65599380 which is a pickle if you don’t drive or have a passport.

    SapphironZA ,

    In South Africa it’s the same. Each person gets a ID card when they turn 16. You don’t need to pay for your first one.

    You need to register as a voter with your ID card and present it when voting.

    She didn't commit voting fraud. She granted access to voting data to people who should not have had that access.

    Tina Peters was convicted of three counts of attempting to influence a public official; conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation; official misconduct; violation of duty; and failure to comply with an order of the Secretary of State. The jury acquitted Peters of three counts: conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation, criminal impersonation and identity theft.

    flying_gel ,

    No problem with ID for voting, just have to make sure they’re accessible by all at no cost (both time and monetary).

    Republicans proposals for voter ID so far have been riddled with ID exclusions that, while never admitted to, would exclude a large part of the population that they don’t want to be allowed to vote. Either include more types of ID or make sure to provide everyone with a voter id for free before the election.

    Spot ,
    @Spot@startrek.website avatar

    My state doesn’t even require one but they send a little paper one every time I update my registration. I imagine something like that could be used? Homeless could use a library or shelter as an address for them?

    There would probably be some asshat who would try and snag other’s though. So yeah. Probably best to just stay without.

    BestBouclettes ,

    For that, you need to make ID mandatory and easily accessible first. Otherwise it’s just voter suppression.

    DarkDecay ,

    As long as they’re for maga officials sure. They seem to be doing most of the voter fraud afterall

    orcrist ,

    For many decades North Dakota didn’t even have voter registration. In 2012 it was alleged that nine individuals were suspect, so the state finally passed a voter registration law in 2013. But none of those 2012 individuals were charged. So then ask yourself, why did they pass the law? Well, maybe they passed the law so they could disenfranchise college kids and Native Americans. Actually, that’s not hypothetical. That’s a fact. Native communities had to bring legal challenges against the new law because they were facing difficulty voting.

    I think it’s also helpful to look at historical examples. When MLK was locked up in Birmingham Jail, there were counties in Alabama that were majority black and yet no black people could vote. Imagine that. Voting laws being crafted to keep minorities out.

    So you keep pushing for your voter ID, but if you can’t figure out how to keep your state from becoming the next North Dakota or Alabama, it probably will.
