Fuck I wish imperial would just disappear. Metric is 100% better in every single way, bar none.

RQG ,
@RQG@lemmy.world avatar

As a European who grew up using only metric I like inches for crafting. It’s a good scale for the things I craft and I prefer fractions over decimals when doing quick math or measurements.

But that doesn’t mean metric shouldn’t be the standard.

Masimatutu , (edited )

I think we should all switch to base twelve and then measure everything in dozenal metric. All problems solved.

Edit: TGM by the Dozenal Society of Great Britain

MooseBoys ,

Base-60 ftw.

Masimatutu ,

I’m all for it if you can manage to make people learn 60 digits <3

Masimatutu ,

Above link stopped working for me so here’s another: www.dozenalsociety.org.uk/apps/tgm.htm

MooseBoys ,

Metric is 100% better in every single way, bar none.

Imperial unit ratios tend to have a greater number of smaller factors, which makes fractions nicer. 1yd/3 = 1ft. 1ft/3 = 4in.

TauZero ,

The fractions don’t help me when I go to the grocery store and unit price of one bag of nuts is “per pound” and the unit price of another is “per ounce”. You’d better be good at dividing by 16 in your head if you want to price-compare! And you’d better be good at remembering how many fluid ounces are in a quart when you go to the olive oil aisle (hint: it’s not 16).

rainynight65 ,

There’s nothing nice or consistent about those fractions. A third of one is one of the other, but a third of that is four of the other? Imperial units don’t convert in any meaningful or logical way, you have to memorise the conversions. With the metric system, it’s all tens.

And the fact that there are no usable units smaller than an inch and you have to use fractions should drive any craftsperson up the wall.

MooseBoys ,

I agree there’s nothing consistent, but having 3 as a factor in ratios does make things nicer - it lets you stick with integer numbers for more things. I’m not saying it’s better than metric, but I do think having more small factors in ratios is nicer than having only the factors 5 and 2.

TauZero ,

I too think having factors of 3 and 4 would be neat, which just proves we should change our number system to base 12, as somebody else in the thread suggested 😊.

trailing9 ,

Can we make it so?

Is lemmy big enough that we can rise awareness for a change? Or the other way around, can we use the rallying behind the metric system to make lemmy popular?

Theharpyeagle ,

I don’t think the majority of Americans have strong feelings about it one way or the other (despite what the internet may say). Honestly it’s just so low on the list of priorities that it doesn’t seem like we’ll ever be in a stable enough place to care about tackling it. Hell we’re still struggling to kill daylight savings time and that would require a fraction of the changes required to adopt metric.

trailing9 ,

Then we should start with daylight savings time.

The interesting question is if social networks can get stuff done without a stable enough place.

Theharpyeagle ,

We’re trying, but the Sunshine Protection Act is stuck in congress. They’re tying themselves in knots trying to figure out which time we should settle on. Like, I don’t give a duck, just pick one and move on! Ask the farmers and other outdoor workers what they prefer, the rest of us can deal. They’re concerned about traffic and whatever when we’ve seen that time changes cause lost productivity every single year. So infuriating, can’t help but waste time on the simplest things.

trailing9 ,

That’s where the social network comes in. Have all farmers in a channel and let them vote.

But let’s not forget powerful people who want sunrise in their breakfast room at a certain time. It’s stupid but those concerns should also be respected, among many others that can be considered when the requirements are collected.

wowwoweowza OP ,

Gen X but guilty as charged. How many boomers are making the transition to the Fediverse?

Bassman1805 ,

I’d say solidly GenZ. Thinking that everybody else is stuck in the vortex of lies but you have now broken free by [doing something only marginally different]. The kind of idealism you see in youth. Fediverse apps help with some of the problems we see in other social media, but ultimately it’s a new diet, same shit.

itsralC ,

Ironically Plato takes this into account in his allegory. There are lots of levels to “knowledge” (which he equated with goodness); we could be in the same spot just with our heads turned, or right behind the wall, or outside the cave but looking at the reflections in the water. And in each stage everyone believes they’re right and that they know the truth (except maybe in the last one). Honestly I think with fedi we just managed to turn our heads.

joenforcer ,

We did. Keep in mind that the explosion of growth on Lemmy is mostly made up of people that lost their apps due to the API rule changes, the ones that were opinionated and engaged enough to be selecting a 3rd party solution. So, Lemmy just got bombed with the loudest and most self-righteous of reddit users that now loudly circlejerk about how much better Lemmy is. In reality, all we have is a less diverse crowd of really loud people. Same shit, different platform.

wowwoweowza OP ,

Reddit is about cynicism— Fediverse is about progress. Optimism.

I’m a later comer here I think but I know everyone here met a great deal of disappointment in the redddit collapse.

What if we rebuild together — something that lives up to the possibilities?

Bassman1805 ,

You sound like the CEO at my old company 🤣

Fediverse makes improvements on existing social media formats, but there are so many issues inherent to online social media that cannot be fixed by slightly changing the format.

Short-term, consequence-free interaction with strangers is not a substitute for actual social interaction, but it’s become one of the default modes of socialization in the modern world. It’s a bell that can’t be un-rung, but moving from reddit to lemmy isn’t going to mute it in any significant way either.

wowwoweowza OP ,

We are in complete agreement about the “value” of social media — very little. The real value as you imply is in-person humans making kind conversation in physical environments. Let’s do that.

I’m really only here because I want to participate in the fall of Reddit — but just moments ago I was having a coffee with five close face to face friends — that’s where it’s really happening.

“nobody:” indicates that in the kid’s perception, the split up was out of the blue. The “nobody:” formulation indicates a moment of initial silence, or of everything being fine. The contrast of initial silence/everything seeming ok, and a dramatic break up of one’s parents adds an extra layer of drama and comedy to the situation. It serves a purpose.

I tried switching to Firefox some weeks ago but deinstalled it immediately after realising that it’s DNS doesn’t work. My ISP is censoring some 🏴‍☠️ websites and I can only visit them by not using my ISP’s dns service.

No matter which DNS i selected in the browser settings I always got an error saying that Firefox couldn’t reach the DNS. I will stick to Opera GX now 🤷‍♂️

chris ,
@chris@l.roofo.cc avatar

SickPanda ,
@SickPanda@lemmy.world avatar

In my browser. If I setup Google public dns or cloudfare in Opera GX as DNS it works perfectly fine. The only downside is that I can’t access fritz.box anymore, I have to use the IP of my router to be able to access it, I just bookmarked it though.

In Firefox the dns settings dont work at all. If I disable dns I get the censoring screen, if I enable any of the dns settings Firefox always says it can’t reach the DNS service.

nevial ,
@nevial@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Why don’t you just set your DNS system-wide and set your browsers’ to “system DNS”, though? This shouldn’t be a browser issue

nevial ,
@nevial@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Or, better yet: Define your DNS network-wide on your router (if it does support that, and if not, get a decent router) and let all your devices and browsers use those (that should happen automatically, no need to set that specifically)

SickPanda ,
@SickPanda@lemmy.world avatar

system wide changes tend to create system wide problems. Never touch a running system.

CeeBee ,

Never touch a running system.

What does this even mean? You have to touch it to make changes, upgrade, improve, etc.

SickPanda ,
@SickPanda@lemmy.world avatar

The phrase is an old school principle of German server admins. Backups were super expensive back then and rolling back the system after an “upgrade” or “change” did also cost ALOT of money.

The original phrase was altered and used to be a sports thing (from baseball I believe). It used to be “never change a winning team”

CeeBee ,

Ya, I kinda figured that’s what you might mean, and in that case it’s entirely wrong.

Long uptimes used to be a point of pride for admins with how long they could keep a single boot session running. But these days a long uptime just means very outdated security patches.

“Never touch a running system” is very much the same vein now. You should constantly be touching the system for system maintenance and such.

nevial ,
@nevial@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

That’s not what “never touch a running system” is meant for. It creates a lot more problems (as you experienced yourself) to dabble with DNS on an application-level

SickPanda ,
@SickPanda@lemmy.world avatar

Nope. First of all I only had one problem and only with Firefox. Second the phrase is also usable in this case. If I change my dns settings in my system (or my router), there is a chance that ALL applications have a problem with resolving URLs. Making most changes only on application layer did save me alot of time which others had to use for troubleshooting.

nevial ,
@nevial@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I mean you do you of course, but to me that’s not logical at all, it’s literally just one line of numbers that you would have to troubleshoot (if at all) and the entire system would be fixed instead of doing that for each application separately

vox , (edited )

Nobody is downvoting you for just talking. They’re downvoting you because you very clearly lack knowledge in what you’re doing but are blaming it on the browser.

SickPanda ,
@SickPanda@lemmy.world avatar

no the browser is the one to blame because the same settings which work in Opera don’t work in Firefox. I know I could change my dns system wide but it’s a personal preference to only make small changes to a running system.

There are 3 options for dns over https in Firefox and none of them work. disabling it obviously doesn’t work too because Firefox uses my ISP’s dns service then.

CeeBee ,

There are 3 options for dns over https in Firefox and none of them work.

Then you did something wrong.

dRLY ,
@dRLY@lemmy.ml avatar

It might be a good idea to get a good VPN for any of those sites (even the streaming ones). No hate if you ran into an issue with FF. Every now and then I do see some PCs act weird with FF DNS options. Never able to figure out what causes them to not work correctly while most other PCs are working fine on the same local network. Opera and Opera GX “feel” too “busy” for me personally with just all the random things on the UI and features. I support people using anything that isn’t official Chrome at this point.

If you don’t already have a VPN, here is a list article with more than a few options and give some basic info on stuff like if they keep logs of IPs and for how long. Some of them also have additional DNS options for removing ads. https://torrentfreak.com/best-vpn-anonymous-no-logging/
