So we are all just gonna pretend she’s not an alien, right?

shalafi ,

She’s the most beautiful woman in the world is who she is. Alien? Fine by me!

Iheartcheese ,
@Iheartcheese@lemmy.world avatar

Oh I didn’t say she isn’t beautiful. She’s a beautiful alien.

shalafi ,

We are solidly on the same page.

pipe01 ,

If that’s how aliens look like I’d let them use my body for experiments

hactar42 , in I refuse to believe that they made that abomination of a sequel

Just like there is no Blues Brothers sequel and Terminator ended after T2.

SkybreakerEngineer ,

Pacific Rim, Highlander…

hactar42 ,

There can be only one…well that unless we can milk more money from the franchise

rwhitisissle ,

Fuck, the original Pacific Rim wasn’t even good. Like, how you gonna set such a low bar and somehow slide under it with room to spare?

juliebean ,

T2 is definitely the best terminator film, but you’re missing out if you discount all the sequels. Dark Fate at least is pretty darn good, and it’s basically a direct sequel to T2, so you don’t have to watch all the films in between.

Toribor , in I refuse to believe that they made that abomination of a sequel
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

Should I watch Megamind?

I know nothing about it except that memes indicate people like it. I’m usually on board with a DreamWorks or Pixar movie but I’d mentally sorted this one into the ‘not for me’ category along with Minions for some reason (not intending to compare the two).

Varven OP ,
@Varven@lemmy.world avatar

Yes the first one yes definitely just don’t watch anything after the first one after the first one it’s a cringe fest

logging_strict ,

I live for cringe!

Dead Snow I was sad.

Dead Snow II i’m still besides myself. They hit the ball out of the genre!

But if you can’t appreciate (good) cringe then the point would be missed

Varven OP ,
@Varven@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not talking about good cringe I’m talking about bad cringe

Nefara ,

Yes, the first one is goofy but it did the whole “what would an actually average person do with superhero powers” shtick before it was cool, and managed to make it funny and pretty sweet too.

BadNewsNobody ,

IMHO…fuck yes! It’s a funny and clever movie that should’ve gotten more recognition but was overshadowed by other releases that same year. As a grown man on the edge of 40 it’s one of my favorite movies and never fails to get a laugh. Endlessly quotable, lots of clever little jokes and gags that are hilarious when you notice them.

I’d say it’s absolutely worth at least one watch and if you like it enough to watch it again you’ll definitely notice some things that you didn’t the first time around and get a whole new set of laughs.

MindTraveller ,

Yes, it’s a commentary on the way that generational systematic racism and overpolicing negatively impact black youths. And also a deconstruction of incel ideology.

cordlesslamp ,

How DARE YOU put the sacred name of Megamind equal to those yellow turds.

Kacarott ,

To be fair, the first despicable me was decent imo. But the abominations which followed…

cordlesslamp ,

Yeah, I agree with you. Now it feels like they’re based their entire studio’s identity on those yellow turd and milking it to the bone.

Snowclone ,

The whole idea was to make money the whole time!!!

Snowclone ,

It’s surprisingly funny with a lot of absurdist humor, there’s a lot to like, but also not every film is for everyone.

Computerchairgeneral , in I refuse to believe that they made that abomination of a sequel

I had genuinely forgotten about the sequel until I saw this. Started wondering how I had missed that and then I remembered it was a straight to streaming cash grab. Time to go back to being blissfully ignorant.

Zagorath ,
@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

I had never heard of the sequel until a day or two ago when the YT algorithm fed me Schaffrillas’ video about it. I still haven’t actually watched it, and based on that review I think I’ll keep it that way.

adamkempenich ,
@adamkempenich@lemmy.world avatar

This is the first time I’ve ever heard of it and it looks awful. That’s paw-patrol level of animation right there, and it definitely sits in the uncanny valley of animation for me.

Snowclone ,

Paw Parol isn’t badly done for the budget. But… I’ll give it to you, it’s not full length theatrical release good.

AirDevil , in I refuse to believe that they made that abomination of a sequel

Cowbee , (edited ) in ARE TANKIES CONSPIRING TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BAD TIME ON LEMMY.ML?
@Cowbee@lemmy.ml avatar

All in all, “Tankie” is just the modern version of “Pinko!” I’ve seen Anarchists called Tankies, every manner of Marxists, non-Marxist Socialists, and more. It truly lost all of its meaning and is just Lemmy’s Red Scare.

A huge portion of that comes from Lemmy.world, which is the largest instance to defederate intentionally from Hexbear and Grad, which has the presumably unintended effect of making Zionists and other far-right wingers feel comfortable in an Anticommunist instance.

commiewithoutorgans ,
@commiewithoutorgans@hexbear.net avatar

Unintended may be somewhat true, in that nobody explicitly had that as a conscious reason, but it was an obvious result that they could’ve known beforehand. So I don’t think it’s useful at all to call it unintended. Just an easily understood and expected side effect

Cowbee ,
@Cowbee@lemmy.ml avatar

That’s a fair enough critique. They definitely should have known what would happen, but this is more for the new users who came after defederation.

velox_vulnus ,

lemmy.world has comments in their community, where they call for the nuking of developing countries, when they read news of social injustice. By that logic, their ‘civilized’ country should be nuked thrice, because cartoonishly evil, rich scumbags like Jeffrey Epstein and their associates still have a free pass for raping minors in their creepy sex-dungeons.

Cowbee ,
@Cowbee@lemmy.ml avatar

Yep, it’s disgusting to see.

GeneralVincent ,

I’m starting to realize one of the biggest issues with the fediverse is how much tribalism is going to play a part in interactions between instances. It seems like every instance is going to have some absurd stereotypes that get repeated as fact.

Some people in .ml and hexbear were labeled tankies, accurately or not, and now you’re all tankies. And this post seems to be in response to that, saying the word tankie isn’t even a real thing. And now we have comments suggesting lemmy.world is also a unified group promoting certain ideologies. It’s the largest instance, we’re gonna have one-off crazies saying stupid stuff.

I know it does makes a small difference being on .world vs .ml/hexbear. But most people in both are leftists if what I’ve seen is accurate. We’re just being stereotypical leftist splintering ourselves into separate groups over the smallest differences.

It’s really funny. Real alpha males don’t care if you wear a rainbow or not.

Phegan ,

Real alpha males don’t exist. The study on wolves having alphas have been proven wrong my most.othet subsequent studies.

Tlaloc_Temporal , (edited )

Well…

Alpha wolves definitely don’t exists, but there is support for “alpha” behaviour in primates, particularly chimpanzees.

“Alpha” is still a stupid and harmful idea, but it’s not without precedent.

Phegan ,

They also found in other chimpanzees that alphas don’t exist. I think we are both in agreement that it’s a stupid construct to apply to humans though.

Auzy ,

And the biggest badasses I know also drive some of the crappiest cars and such too.

When more hilariously, here in Australia, I do a lot of hiking and such, and the badasses these days tend to be women. There’s a lot of macho guys who talk big, but I’ve done some scary hikes with elderly women and a woman with Parkinson’s.

The guys and women i.know who do the most crazy stuff also tend to be the most friendly people

So do people care about not being able to understand lyrics? (I can rarely understand English ones anyway.)

fakeman_pretendname ,

You just understand them in your own way.

When this first came out, we interpreted it as:

Who? Who has? Who has fish? Who has fish from France?

Karyoplasma ,

Works the other way around as well. When I was a teen, I though Rage Against The Machine’s “Killing in the Name” was asking where their sneakers are.

And now you do what they told ya

Ey Mann, wo issen mein Turnschuh?

“Dude, where is my sneaker (just one of the pair)”

dubyakay ,

As someone who has German as their second and English as their third language, I’ve never misunderstood that line like that. That’s hella funny though.

fakeman_pretendname ,

That’s brilliant! Are there any other songs which do similar?

Kowowow ,

I like to know the meaning but normally just sing the closest english words like “the genies in the food court” from one of gogol bordello’s songs

CrazyLikeGollum ,

I like to be able to sing along to songs when I’m alone in the car, so even if I don’t understand the meaning of the words, I like to know the words.

I also enjoy word play, and Du Hast has some of that. So knowing the bit of trivia about ‘Hast’ and ‘Hasst’ being homophones in German and meaning ‘have’ and ‘hate’ respectively, and the main portion of the lyrics being wedding vows adds a layer of enjoyment to the song for me.

BubbleMonkey , (edited )

Personally, I prefer things I don’t understand because I don’t have to mentally deal with whatever bullshit they are saying. I can sing it a thousand times without ever thinking too much about it because I know the sounds and not the meaning of the words.

I can belt out a ton of Japanese or Russian music, because I started listening to help my language learning (classes, not self-guided), but I don’t actually understand the songs. I “know the words”, but that’s it.

Aqarius ,

I find the opposite works fine: I don’t have to know the exact words, but I doo look up the translation to know what the song is actually about.
