Far Cry 3 and SteamVR looked to be broken installs i probs copied over from an old device. they weren’t even showing up as installed in the steam library, i deleted the folders.
As for 7 days to die, i deleted the EasyAntiCheat_Setup.exe and ran verify integrity of install files. it didn’t get redownloaded so i dunno 🤷♂️
The “Last Played” time for it was July 14th 2014, so it’s unlikely it has ever run on this machine
Based on the table at the above link, it sounds like there is experimental support for the display only, and no controller support.
Experimental 6DoF tracking support with external SLAM/VIO systems is upstreamed but still being worked on. Tested with RealSense D455 and Samsung Odyssey+, Reverb G2, Oculus Rift S.
That sounds pretty promising. I know the headset camera-based controller tracking will be a pain to implement, but at least there’s some hope for people that plonked down 600+ bucks for these devices. Some, like me, just a month ahead of the eol announcement…
some streamers use a capture device to stream on a second device with an extra internet connection, so the stream doesn’t interfere with their gaming internet connection
Streamers use a capture device to stream on a second computer, with an extra GPU so the stream doesn’t interfere with their gaming performance. Don’t want stream encoding to hurt your framerate.
I’ve never heard of anyone using a multiple device setup for internet bandwidth reasons (im sure its happened, but I would have to believe it’s generally not the reason people use multiple devices)
Should work fine, especially as this mainboard has Realtek ethernet (ASUS sets up Intel I225 ethernet in a way that can cause issues, see this post on Reddit).
That’s not good, I actively try to avoid realtek cards since they are unreliable in linux. I have an asus board with an Intel nic but I haven’t had these issues.
YMMV of course, but I had this happen mostly after hours of using the computer (4+ hours). I think it’s mostly random when it happens though. The network adapter just fully disappears.
This probably doesn’t affect all ASUS mainboards, but I’d assume it affects all ASUS AM5 mainboards in a similar way.
My mainboard is an ASUS ROG Strix B650E-E by the way.
No I think it’s revision 3 as well (although I’d have to double check to be sure), all revisions have (different) issues apparently. What I’m saying is that the I225 seems to be rather picky about what switches it plays nice with, so while it might work just fine with your specific setup, it might stop working fine when you change one variable (like the switch you’re connecting to).
Also in addition to the issues the I225 has anyway, ASUS (and judging by some comments here other mainboard manufacturers as well) seems to have additional issues related to the power management of the built-in I225 adapter. From what I gathered dedicated PCIe cards with the I225 work much more reliably.
The I225 has several issues in all of its revisions, that’s true. There’s still better and worse implementations, and ASUS seems to have gotten it “more” wrong.
Anyway, the Reddit post I linked to includes a workaround, you might want to try it since you have the same issue.
Q4os with Trinity desktop really needs little RAM and runs fast even on old devices. The desktop is a bit old-fashioned, but ok. You may also try lighter browsers, perhaps Palemoon.
But 4GB is actually not that little, almost all distros can run well with it, especially rather slim ones like Debian lxqt. maybe it’s really due to the hdd.
I’ll +1 the Fedora KDE for desktop usage and Debian for server usage … this combo is where I’ve landed after over a decade in the Linux space mixed with personal and professional usage.
I tried Fedora KDE 40, it was hell to install the Nvidia drivers and it freezes randomly and when I play the screen goes black after some minutes and I have to restart.
What? I’m using neon with Nvidia’s v550 driver right now. I’ll try switching switching to v555 driver as linked in OP via apt once it available through Nvidia’s (compatible) debian repos for Ubuntu.
Have always run AMD, and I have had 0 issues, from arch to fedora to Debian. Gaming, CAD, video editing, not once have I had to use anything other than the open source drivers that are bundled with the distro. I currently have a 6700xt running Debian, and the only games I have issues with are the ones that just came out where they are squashing bugs anyway. Three weeks later, it’s running better on Linux than windows.
I’ve been happy with btrfs. No issues with gaming. There’s even a pretty good Windows driver, which I’ve used successfully to transfer data between Linux & Windows. Though I haven’t installed Windows itself to btrfs, which is apparently possible!
