RayOfSunlight , in These are the problems you're facing on Linux, and I'm baffled!

Dang, look at those down votes :/

Excrubulent , (edited )
@Excrubulent@slrpnk.net avatar

Because the shaming tone is just infuriating. Yes, new people have problems with the system, shaming them by telling them their problems are “baffling” is tone-deaf.

Worse, if you have to shame people into using your system, it sends the message that Linux has serious problems that people need to be shamed into accepting. Shaming people into changing their behaviour basically never works by the way, outside of maybe a very insular village setting.

A better title might be, “Solutions to newcomers’s most common problems with Linux”, but the way it’s always phrased is, “Hey all the problems are going away and you’re frankly a teensy tiny brained baby if you’re not using Linux!” Like, maybe fuck off. Maybe show people that the community is capable of advertising itself with literally anything besides toxicity.

I have been on-board with the mission of Linux and hearing this “Hey the switch is actually easy!” gaslighting bullshit for 15 years now. I still haven’t managed to get rid of Windows 100%, and I honestly don’t want to ask for help from literally any Linux fanboy because they have proven themselves to be amongst the most rabidly condescending shits I’ve ever spoken to.

Tyoda , (edited )

A better title might be, “Solutions to newcomers’s most common problems with Linux”

The video is about the results of a survey regarding the problems people are having using Linux. Only 10% of them described themselves as beginners. That would not be a good title.

I personally see zero condescending tone in it. The video doesn’t prove to be toxic like you described either.

IMO this just isn’t a good community for this, because nobody clicks on a 20 minute video to figure out what it has to do with “Linux Gaming”. Plus YT links are almost always downvoted anyways. I agree that the title isn’t the best, because it fails to convey what the video actually contains.

sugar_in_your_tea ,

Here’s what I see:

  • not gaming related, just generally “linux” related
  • ad at the top of the summary
  • potentially condescending tone (baffled at users having problems), but more importantly, it’s click-baity - better title: survey results about issues linux users have

I didn’t down-vote, but I didn’t click it or upvote it because I wasn’t sure if it was relevant or not and I’m not interested in watching a video to find out. I can absolutely understand downvotes though.

If the title is dubious, leave a note in the description as to why I should watch it. Mentioning tge survey would be a great place to start.

DankPods uses Linux on his gaming system, which I just found out recently. Seems like Linux is starting to gain traction in the content creator space now, which is neat.

Ritsu4Life ,

In which video did he show he used Linux?

vodka ,

atmur ,

www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6fSalzLHJ8

At 11:55 you can see the Gnome top bar, and at 14:50 he mentions it.

priapus ,

That’s awesome, I remember him mentioning in much older videos that he wants to switch to Linux when its ready enough for him to game on. He also shits on Windows every chance he gets, so glad he got to switch.

warmaster ,

Which wouldn’t be the case if it wasn’t for Davinci Resolve, otherwise these guys would never switch.

UnaSolaEstrellaLibre , in Steve with GN Considering Linux

I kinda doubt they’ll fully migrate to Linux since they depend on many proprietary software tools that aren’t available outside of Windows.

sugar_in_your_tea ,

Yup, their business is doing hardware reviews, which involves benchmarks and whatnot on Windows. So at least those machines will stay Windows, and probably their editing machines.

They might convert a handful of other machines, but I doubt it’ll be that many.

CalcProgrammer1 ,
@CalcProgrammer1@lemmy.ml avatar

It would be nice to see Linux benchmarks for new hardware too. Love GN’s content but I basically ignore his benchmarks as they’re done on Windows. It shows the relative strengths of the hardware but not real world Linux performance.

sugar_in_your_tea ,

Would be nice, but that’s a lot of work, especially when the majority of his viewers are probably on Windows.

luciferofastora ,

He could take a bit of a gamble, do some Linux as a comparison and see if that draws viewers too, maybe some attention from those that are curious about Linux but not enough to actually delve into the topic themselves (or deterred by the reputation of Linux being complicated).

Choosing a suitable distribution might be a challenge, particularly because some distro elitists will inevitably come to dunk on his choice and he might not want the comment section to be clogged by distro wars (particularly if the majority of viewers, as you suggested, are Windows users and will find that off-putting).

Now why has Valve returned to seemingly continue work on SteamVR in earnest, especially where Linux is concerned…

Fingers crossed they’re cooking something interesting up. Whether that’s “Deckard” or not.

clothes ,

At this point I accept that Valve probably can’t compete with the billions poured into the Meta Quest 3, but I’m glad they understand there’s an enthusiastic audience for whatever they do next.

MentalEdge ,
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

PCVR is an afterthought for Meta.

YaBoyMax ,

It seems like one of the most conspicuous contributors to recent Linux fixes works for a consulting firm presumably contracted by Valve, so it definitely seems like a coordinated effort in preparation for… something.

Rustmilian ,
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

They promised so a while back, some time just after first introducing the Steam Deck. They’re keeping that promise.

Nibodhika ,

As much as I would love that, don’t read too much into it, Valve has always pushed Linux fixes for all of their things (including VR)

MentalEdge ,
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

The fact that I still have to use an app on my phone to wake and suspend my base stations, says otherwise.

MrPoopbutt ,

What app can do that?

MentalEdge ,
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

Lighthouse PM

Base station commands are just simple Bluetooth broadcasts, so there is no pairing or anything.

You just get the app, and it will show you any nearby base stations, and let you broadcast the suspend/wake signal from you phone.

bisby ,

It’s a nice tool to have around anyway. Even for my windows VR PC. The power at my house went out yesterday and the base stations restarted into a fully on state. I didn’t have to turn on the VR PC to turn them back off, just had to open Lighthouse PM.

listens

New processor, better, brighter display, 120Hz display refresh, thermal improvements in cooling of processor and voltage regulation system, color-coded expansion modules to match bezel, high monitor resolution to avoid fractional scaling, better webcam, new expansion module for SD card storage, option for keyboard with “Super”-labeled key rather than Windows key.

For small-medium businesses, can ship with Windows 11 and provides longer warranty, scaled up support staff.

Neither of my two wishlist items, 100Wh battery or triple mechanical trackpad buttons, though.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Is the 61 watt hour battery new vs the 55? I’m not expecting 100 wh in a small 13" laptop, but 61 is an improvement. I’d really like to see at least 70 (like the 14" MBP) in something that size.

Lack of wifi 7 is also disappointing

I think I read about that being an option earlier.

Yeah, this is a year old:

community.frame.work/t/90-wh-batteries/28169

90+ wh batteries

I’m definitely not the only one who wants them to max out the battery.

Framework just announced today a new 61Wh battery upgrade which will fit in the original case. That’s an 11% upgrade from the original 55Wh battery.

Currently only supports BG3 and cyberpunk2077 but has plans for Bethesda games I think the beta on his discord might allow them. Anyway it’ll be a linux mod manager for multiple games once complete

WeLoveCastingSpellz OP ,

that is so awesome

darkmogool ,

I disvovered Lampray just this weekend. It’s an awesome application.

sychthys ,

Thanks for shouting this out. Honestly the only thing keeping me going back to Windows is the complexity in getting modding done on various games, Bethesda and BG3 among them. I know it can be done, but there are too many hoops for my post-work brain to jump through. End up running out of spoons to keep learning all the new concepts. This is exciting, definitely keeping an eye on this as hopefully the final barrier breaker to switch to Linux full time.
