“What, you don’t like retro yet proper gaming on a 1W device?”

– Me, if I were that lone guy holding a controller

atocci , in Just Switch Over

I am slowly chugging through the weird issues I have with trying to use Bazzite as my primary OS, but it will replace my Windows install soon, I can feel it. I still miss HDR, but my newest and most inconvenient issue is that Firefox just keeps crashing as soon as it launches now. No luck fixing it so far, and I installed Edge just to have a working browser.

webghost0101 , in Just Switch Over

Its not ready for VR. Thats why my vr headset is collecting dust.

The tech is cool but evidently not worth it to find motivation to go back to win.

Telorand ,

Maybe if you used VR Chat all the time, but there’s vfio for those cases, if needed. I just learned about it from another user, and so there’s really no need to keep Windows as your primary boot partition or even have a dual boot setup.

chronicledmonocle ,

My Quest 2 has been running VR fine. ALVR’s latest update made me finally nuke my Windows partition I kept for VR.

Other than Angry Birds VR needing to have the recenter button hit after it’s first launched, so far it’s been fine for HL: Alyx, Beat Saber, Budget Cuts, and a few others I’ve tried. Literally the only workaround quirk I’ve found so far.

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

If you have a headset that works on Linux, everything works just fine. A lot of headsets are just missing the drivers.

Years ago I bought a ps4 controller to play in my Linux pc, but the games didn’t recognize the controller input, I had to use some program to map the keyboard to the controllers but it didn’t work well, so I installed steam and with it ir worked perfectly. Because work and college I had to stop gaming for a couple of years, and I tried again some weeks ago with Lutris, to my surprise that the controller got recognized and worked perfectly without the need for steam.

Acidbath , in Just Switch Over

I used to kinda complain about this but being unable to play lol or lostark has greatly improved my life. I don’t mind being unable to play these games.

I am very grateful for proton and all of the technologies that allow me to play majority of my games. linux gaming in 2015 was painful.

abfarid , in Just Switch Over
@abfarid@startrek.website avatar

I don’t think anybody ever told someone else not to use Linux when they are already using and enjoying it. This argument is often used as a defense against switching to Linux. And of course, if you just want to play your games without messing with all the bottles and Proton versions, Windows is still the way to go, especially for older games.
As a challenge I tried getting several older games to work on Steam Deck, and while it was fun for me, I like tinkering, I can totally see how it can be a huge hassle for others.

Known unknown(s) at 7.14% and rising over the Linux stat. Could these also be Linux and perhaps BSD desktops?

olafurp ,

We don’t know

FreeLikeGNU ,

I’ll imagine that there is a rising tide of Amiga desktops then.

That’s TempleOS.

I recently moved my ASUS ROG Zephyrus entirely over to Linux and it’s been seamless. I’ve been able to play every game without issue. Between my Steam Deck and the laptop, my console days may be numbered.

scrubbles OP ,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

I have one last windows machine hooked up to my TV, using Steam Big Picture. I’m going to wait until Dragon Age Veilguard just to see a new game how quickly it becomes supported/how difficult it’ll be to set up, but if I can get it working pretty quickly, I think that’ll be off Windows

orca ,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

What I usually do is change every Steam game to use the “Experimental” version of Proton. As soon as I enable that, basically any game in my library becomes installable. Even non-Steam games can be added in and use Proton iirc. My success rate has been pretty good, but some games are still a little rough (mostly lack of controller support, or things like traversing dumb launchers like in GTA).

scrubbles OP ,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Oh yeah, the number one issues were with non-steam games, getting EA play to launch by itself. Learned a lot about Lutris and wine for that, DA:O and ME:L were both like that, but got both to work perfectly!

Blisterexe ,

btw bazzite.gg is cool for living room pc’s

victorz , in Gaming on Linux is great!

Out of curiosity, would you mind sharing the resource you followed to get PhysX to install on Linux?

scrubbles OP ,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

I’m using Lutris, and Wine is my runner. On my game I could see this button here, for Wine.

https://poptalk.scrubbles.tech/pictrs/image/0db00a81-004e-4695-94b0-28abe4e59659.png

Select the arrow and hit “winetricks”. Then in there it’s a bit convoluted, but

  • Install an Application
  • Cancel
  • Install a Windows DLL or Component
  • Select physx and go!
victorz ,

Lutris seems really cool. I couldn’t get it to work.

I’m on Arch and I tried both the native package as well as the Flatpak version. None of them worked. Something going wrong when installing some shit in an automated installer, I dunno. I wish I could find a good guide. I’m usually handy with these things but I don’t understand the error messages, so…

brocon ,

I’m in the same boat. I installed Bazzite oh my desktop as well as on my Legion Go. Everything runs out of the box. Except Lutris.

victorz ,

I just don’t get it. 😔

AmosBurton_ThatGuy ,
@AmosBurton_ThatGuy@lemmy.ca avatar

I’ve been using Bazzite for about 2 months now (daily driver for about a month and a half) and Lutris came preinstalled for me. I’ve had zero problems using it, I have battle.net games and EA app (fuck that app BTW) games installed and it just works for me.

Was it not preinstalled with your initial installation of Bazzite?

brocon ,

Nevermind. Found out it was a failure on my part. By default it does not show un-installed games. Because I had no games installed, it always showed no games. And I assumed it was broken.

AmosBurton_ThatGuy ,
@AmosBurton_ThatGuy@lemmy.ca avatar

Trial and error, I feel your pain. I’ve learned a lot since switching and I’m loving it tbh!

Glad you got it figured out!

I’m starting a full playthrough of Dragon Age.

If you gonna play the 3 games I can give some advice and some sadnews.

DAO is the oldest but works quite well on Linux, not a single problem.

DA2 need the fucking EA App crap bullshit to run, even on steam. Because of that crap I had a lot of problems with alt + tab, crashings, resolutions bug. To fix it I need to enable virtual desktop in the wineprefix with my monitor resolution, after that everything went smooth.

DAI again the stupid fuck EA App. If you are in the same situation than me: bought the game on Origin, not on steam, I have some bad news about mods. FrostyMods just doesn’t work and is the EA bullshit problem. With the steam version someone made a patch for linux and looks like it works.

EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted ,
@EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

RIGHT??

I hate it too!

InternetUser2012 ,

I haven’t played that game, but I have some EA games that work great on Lutris. Have you tried that?

ZeroHora ,
@ZeroHora@lemmy.ml avatar

I tried Lutris, Steam and Bottles, the bug with mods on DAI for what I understand is because the EA crap App doesn’t recognize launch options like Steam does so anything that depends on it doesn’t work, I don’t know why but with the Steam version you can pass I think was GAME_DATA_DIR option and Steam launches the game with the mods.

The bug on DA2 is probably EA not giving a shit with older games, the DAI, ME Andromeda and ME Legendary Edition doesn’t have it.

What about on NVIDIA?

Edit: heh. I got downvoted initially for asking a legitimate question for potential interest

scrubbles OP ,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Nvidia was a pain before when I did it myself, but I did get it to work. I switched to PopOS though, and it made nvidia so. much. easier! There’s just a separate download for it

DoucheBagMcSwag ,

Interesting… So Pop OS favors NVIDIA?

scrubbles OP ,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

I wouldn’t say they favor it, but they have a standard build/iso and one that has Nvidia drivers already set up and ready

DoucheBagMcSwag ,

I’m gonna replace my Mint install (secondary HDD)!with Pop OS this weekend

Womble ,

IIRC it just defaults on Ubuntu’s handling for close source Nvida drivers (though its been a while since I used pop os so that could be out of date)

Can confirm War Thunder ran significantly better on Linux (literally no idea why), and World of Warships ran much faster on ext4 on an HDD vs ntfs on an HDD.

Wizard_Pope ,
@Wizard_Pope@lemmy.world avatar

Well war thunder has a dedicated linux version afaik. Could be it is just better optimised.

dillekant , in Counter strike 2 issues

I remember the frame time issue happening but it fixed itself and I can’t remember the cause. Try changing the refresh rate of your monitor, it might kick something which fixes it.

Performance should definitely be mostly on par with Windows.

Akip , in Counter strike 2 issues

The game is set to run full screen ( as windowed fullscreen caps the framerate to 60, while the screen supports 144 ).

In case your game also doesn’t launch on the main screen you can try setting the monitor to a different position on the virtual canvas:

github.com/ValveSoftware/csgo-osx-linux/…/3282#is…

fluckx OP ,

I’m only using one screen at the moment, but thanks for the input! Maybe it helps someone else, or me if i decide to hook up the other screen again :)

wingsfortheirsmiles , in Counter strike 2 issues

Fwiw, I’ve had no issues playing CS2 on either with my old (3700x/1080ti) or newer setup (5800X3D/7900XTX) with PopOS. The first doesn’t seem too far away from your rig, have you tried switching the Nvidia driver you’re on? I think Turing is fine with 560?

fluckx OP ,

Good point,it hadn’t crossed my mind yet. I’m assuming it’s using the proprietary nvidia drivers. I’ll give that a go.
