yote_zip , in Has anyone managed to get The Finals play test running on Linux?
@yote_zip@pawb.social avatar

It looks like the answer is a resounding no.

citrusface OP ,

Erp - new to Linux gaming, I forget about protondb.

Thanks for the heads up!

Hopefully itll work when it’s out of beta.

ono , in How do I Backup game files in Flatpak Steam?

Unless you’ve added custom library folders, this is where the files live:

$HOME/.var/app/com.valvesoftware.Steam/

Dexx1s , in Apex Legends Ignite Update broke anti-cheat on Steam Deck/Linux

Assuming the trollo board is legit, good to see that they already know about and will be fixing it relatively soon. I was wondering wtf was going on.

noodlejetski OP ,

where are you seeing that they’re already working on it?

edit: ah, gotcha. didn’t know their Trello was public trello.com/…/430-eac-error-with-steam-deck-linux

yote_zip , (edited ) in Jedi fallen order not launching.
@yote_zip@pawb.social avatar

Make sure to check ProtonDB for a game if you’re having problems. I think jsdz’s answer should work. For extra context, SwGame-Win64-Shipping.exe is a DRM-free executable whereas starwarsjedifallenorder.exe has Origin/EA DRM baked in. Setting your launch option to “path/to/SwGame/Binaries/Win64/SwGame-Win64-Shipping.exe” %command% like they report in ProtonDB should work.

(There’s actually some tiny bits of DRM in SwGame-Win64-Shipping.exe but they allow runtime even when they fail so it’s similar to DRM-free for practical purposes)

reap OP ,

Awesome, will try this out.

vividspecter ,

Also check PCGW as sometimes the issues actually exist on Windows too (and the same workarounds may apply).

reap OP ,

Unfortunately, that didn’t work. It’s the same issue as before.

yote_zip ,
@yote_zip@pawb.social avatar

Try this as a launch option instead:

eval $(echo “%command%” | sed “s/starwarsjedifallenorder.exe/SwGame-Win64-Shipping.exe/”)

If the EA launcher isn’t the problem then running the other executable may still not work. This game should be easy to get working on Linux as it requires no additional dependencies.

reap OP ,

I believe EA Launcher is the problem, I tried to install it to steam and link me account, even tried on lutris. The ea app window briefly launches and then stops running (I made sure proton and wine compatibilities were met).

yote_zip ,
@yote_zip@pawb.social avatar

Are you running Proton Experimental? Otherwise I’m not quite sure what else to do. EA’s DRM is really ugly and often breaks itself. Proton Experimental usually fixes the breaks quickly.

reap OP ,

Yep, lots of posts pointed out that valve usually fixes these issues, but as of now even experimental does not solve the problem.

noodlejetski OP , in Apex Legends Ignite Update broke anti-cheat on Steam Deck/Linux

last time it happened, they’ve quietly added a missing file 9 hours later. hopefully they do the same this time, I wanna see how broken Conduit is

bgtlover ,

@noodlejetski conduit, the matrix server? that's definitely weird

noodlejetski OP ,

Conduit, the Apex Legends character featured in an indie video game titled Apex Legends

Acklavidian , in Jedi fallen order not launching.

If the order felled then the game won’t start. Gotta redo the order

reap OP ,

Fair point, if the drm free approach doesn’t work I’ll give this a shot.

jsdz , in Jedi fallen order not launching.

When I played it the answer was to run “SwGame-Win64-Shipping.exe” instead of whatever stupid launcher it tries to load by default.

reap OP ,

Yeah, I guess it’s origin launcher acting up.

Oha , in gpu performance test
darkeox ,

For relative comparison sure but isn't it starting to become irrelevant these days? No Vulkan nor Raytracing nor Compute.

bgtlover ,

@darkeox @NZV65572 @Oha what is, nvidia or amd? amd does have raytracing, and nvidia has vulkan with proprietary drivers as far as I know, but maybe I'm missing context because my server didn't load all the thread

darkeox ,

My bad. I think I confused this with the previous popular Unigine benchmarks.

dipshit , in Linux vs Windows tested in 10 games - Linux 17% faster on Average

For the games which run. For everything else, Windows is 100% faster than 0%.

Franzia ,

Protondb.com is very helpful when a game doesnt run. I forget where I found info but like a good 10% of steam games dont run using Proton, no matter what you try. And a good 70+% of games work out of the box or with easy, common tweaks. We have some other tools available like Winetricks, Lutris, and if all else fails VM with GPU Passthru.

windows can have a similar troubleshooting workflow, dependent on Compatibility Mode for older games, and using GOG.com repacks to make things easier.

dipshit ,

Linux has gotten a lot better with playing windows games. My issue is that I have one peice of software I want to use: Serato DJ Pro - and due to how that software works with hardware and real-time audio, I haven’t ever been able to get it to run on Linux. Mixxx is a thing, but it doesn’t have the features I use in Serato.

Would really love to drop windows for the one software I need it for.

MrHandyMan , in Nvidia SUCKS!

Earlier this year I had a months long issue where my desktop image would freeze if I set its refresh rate higher than 120. I thought my GPU was breaking up, but I finally found a post on the Nvidia forum where someone else had the same issue and realized that it was because of the newest driver. It took months for Nvidia to fix that. Two months ago I just decided to switch to AMD and sold my Nvidia card and haven’t had any issues with AMD so far.

ReverseModule OP ,
@ReverseModule@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

My 3080M won’t go higher than 80W on Linux for the past 3 years that I have this laptop. I tried both the 535 and 545 drivers, still same issue. This is absolutely unacceptable.

ayaya , (edited )
@ayaya@lemdro.id avatar

To be fair AMD recently had a bug where the 6000 series GPUs would sit at 96 mhz unless you set your refresh rate below 100hz and that also took a couple months to be fixed. I was randomly getting 20fps in every game until I managed to find this gitlab issue. It started in kernel 6.4 and wasn’t fixed until 6.6 so I had to play at 90hz on my 165hz monitor for that whole span.

entropicdrift ,
@entropicdrift@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

This is why LTS kernels are a good thing. I used 6.1 that entire time and didn’t even know the issue existed on my 6700XT

uranibaba ,

Yeah, same reason I use LTS. Latest features are nice and all but I want a stable system for my everyday life.

vividspecter ,

I’m someone that likes to tinker and be on the bleeding edge, but I agree, LTS makes sense on hardware that is more than 6 months old or so.

tomten ,

LTS is no guarantee that there wont be bugs, 6.1 recently had a bug with NFS where it corrupted files.

entropicdrift ,
@entropicdrift@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I didn’t say it was?

You do get fewer bugs, though, and equally frequent hotfixes

tomten ,

No you didnt, I was just trying to say that you’re not safe either way.

entropicdrift ,
@entropicdrift@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Safety is a sliding scale. You’re certainly safer than bleeding edge

ono , (edited ) in Best Desktop Distro for Gaming?

Whichever one you enjoy using.

Unless you have some special hardware need, all the desktop distros perform about the same. (Even long-term support releases, which offer newer kernels in case you need them.)

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot ,

If you’re using a LTS release then you should be aware that many of the programs in the repository will only get bug-fixes and security updates until the next LTS is out. You can get around this by using the Flatpak versions of those programs instead of the distribution’s versions.

ono , (edited )

If you’re using a LTS release then you should be aware that many of the programs in the repository will only get bug-fixes and security updates until the next LTS is out.

Nonsense. Long-term support (LTS) generally lasts until either a predetermined date or until multiple subsequent releases are out. I don’t know of any that stop when the next LTS release arrives, but if such a distro exists, it is atypical.

Recent examples:

ubuntu.com/security/CVE-2023-38546

…debian.org/…/accepted-curl-7740-13deb11u10-sourc…

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot ,

I don’t mean that the security updates will stop, I mean that you’ll only get security updates. If you want to get feature-updates between LTS releases you’ll need the Flatpak versions.

shekau ,

One can use backported version of software in Debian, I use it and it works good so far.

MossyFeathers , in Tumbleweed vs Windows 11 in 5 games on a 3080M - Windows about 10% faster on Average

Honestly, this is why I still haven’t switch to Linux. I have an Nvidia card that I use for stuff like Substance Painter and between that and games, if I was dual-booting I’d probably be running windows 90%-95% of the time. That said, it’s a 3060ti and not a 3080m, so the desktop cards might play nicer than the mobile chips, but still…

If the benchmarks came out on par or with greater performance for Linux then I’d probably switch and either dual-boot or run windows 10 in a VM for the stuff that doesn’t play nice with compatibility layers.

ReverseModule OP ,
@ReverseModule@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Makes sense. I have great hope for NVK, the open source Nvidia Vulkan driver, in 1 or 2 years. Perhaps then, things will be the other way around. :)

MossyFeathers ,

Ye, hopefully. I’m not looking forward to the day Microsoft shuts off updates for windows 10.

CatLikeLemming ,
@CatLikeLemming@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Of course I can’t entirely generalize from this, however my 2080Ti worked perfectly out of the box on EndeavourOS. Game performance is also mostly similar to my Windows install - if they ran well, they still do, and if they ran badly, then the same goes for that as well.

saddlebag ,

You should try it out. I’ve got a 3080 desktop card. I’ve been running Linux as my only os for at least 4/5 years and I had a 970 before this. Barely had any issues with gaming or thermal throttling and it’s running in an SFFPC (Dan H2O).

dack ,

Nvidia drivers have had way more issues with mobile chips than with desktop. GPU compute workloads (including things like Blender) are very well supported. Nvidia on Linux has dominated the compute market for a long time.

_dev_null , in Has anyone been playing Ark Survival Ascended on Linux? (solved my problems, I think)
@_dev_null@lemmy.zxcvn.xyz avatar

When ever I have issues with running steam games on linux, I use the “force compatibility” option, and choose the latest glorious-eggroll version of proton.

I’ve gotten lazy in my older age, so I use protonup-qt to manage my versions of ge-proton. Bonus: This tool can also manage ge-proton versions for lutris, so it’s got that going for it, which is nice.

If this low hanging fruit doesn’t do it, then I’ll checkout protondb to see if anyone else has figured out workarounds for various issues. That link shows some chatter around the latest update, with a couple launch options to try.

CarbonatedPastaSauce , in Has anyone been playing Ark Survival Ascended on Linux? (solved my problems, I think)

No but that isn’t too far off some people’s experience with this game in Windows. It’s notoriously a mess.

I still enjoyed it. Good luck getting it working!

moody OP ,

A dev on one stream said that they’re working full-time on fixing a lot of the crashing issues. and pushing updates out frequently. Hopefully they get my specific issue fixed soon.
