I don’t remember at what company, but I’ve seen this more than once and it’s always hilarious. It’s quite funny watching my SO try and find the hidden mute or close ad button too. I’m glad I’m not from the US myself.

    CADmonkey ,

None of the gas stations around me have rhe “mute” button enabled, but thankfully most of the stations locally don’t blare ads at you while pumping gas. There was one station that tried it years ago and their pumps were constantly vandalized.

    kattenluik ,

I’m honestly usually surprised that gas stations are often far removed from the highway, and that people used to pump gas for you in many areas.

The ads at gas stations are so unnecessary and dumb, and the tips are so so strange.

    shalafi ,

    Sometimes it’s a 2-key combo, 1 on each side. :) Just experiment.

    CADmonkey ,

I should not have to find the combination to get a gas pump to stop advertizing to me. There should be zero ads, or at the least an easy to find and clearly marked “mute” button. It’s easier to break things than it is to find the right buttons.

    Trainguyrom ,

Kwik Trip has the same mute button on all of their pumps, but not all stations have it labeled. I imagine it’ll be similar for other chains. But if nothing else press all of the buttons and any fun combination you can think of and see what happens! On many card kiosks pressing the 4 corners will force-reboot the computer in it for example

The problem is, is that if you engage with anyone outside of the internet, they have no fucking idea what you’re talking about when you call it “X”.

It’s so fucking stupid of a name. Even worse than Facebook changing to Meta.

You can ask people to call it “X” all day, every day, but you can’t just change the name of your brand/product to a single letter, that people use every day for other things, and expect it to work out for you.

    visak ,

In defense of Zuckerberg – and there’s something I never thought I’d say – they changed the name of the company so that they could introduce new brands. They were not dumb enough to rebrand the successful products. It’s just now Facebook by Meta.

    @Stumblinbear@pawb.social avatar

Oculus is by far an infinitely superior brand name

    SnipingNinja ,

    That I agree with

    homura1650 ,

Facebook the product is still Facebook. The only name that changed was that of the company that owns Facebook, which makes sense as that holding company also runs other products like Instagram.

Google made a similar move in 2015 when it created Alphabet to hold the non Google parts of Google.

In both cases the renaming was on the coorporate side. They made no effort to loose the old trademark, and continue to operate under it today.

The only high profile case that comes to mind that is simmilar to Twitter is when Comcast rebranded itself as Xfinity in 2010. In that case, it worked because: A) Comcasts reputation was way worse than Twitters and B) people don’t have that much of an option anyway. In the otherhand, the rebranding failed in the sense that everyone still knows them as Comcast.

    Pinklink ,

I honestly thought Comcast just bought xfinity at some point. Also fuck xfinity

    MotoAsh ,

I think they DID buy xfinity, then used the name because they were done wiping their ass with “comcast”. I only say this because I distinctly remember having both xfinity and comcast showing up as internet options on some old house listings.

    vivadanang ,

xfinity wasn’t an acquisition, it was just comcast rebranding trying to separate itself from the stank of comcast. It did occur during a time of acquisitions of other cable networks, but that’s been true of comcast for 15ish years. both domains still work for customers.

    MotoAsh ,

Ahhh, so it could’ve been a local acquisition changing their names on ads before Comcast finished the job, or maybe vice-versa somehow. Interesting.

    mgiuca ,

Largely true but as a small aside, Google is still a company (within Alphabet). Alphabet is purely a corporate structure, and all branding still has Google on it. Whereas Facebook is now only a product, Meta is the company brand with its own logo and products named directly after it (like Meta Quest).

    Makhno ,

What sexist horseshit are you talking about?

    unipadfox ,

Of course the creator is going to tout the most morally upstanding use of his app. If it genuinely helps human trafficking victims, then that’s another story, but from this quote it just seems like he has some vague hope about it.

    Revan343 ,

A tech startup with vague likely unrealistic hopes? What are the chances?

    ameancow ,

Yeah that sounds so much like post-hoc justification that I’m seriously surprised that it’s being swallowed by anyone.

I mean, great if it DOES help with such a terrible problem, it’s just I have seen this thing being talked about before and it’s NEVER been discussed in terms of helping trafficking victims. This is the first I’ve heard of it. Almost every time you see this kind of narrative being discussed it’s either 99% of the time a bunch of sweaty incels online whinging about how women aren’t really pretty and just want to trap guys or some other dom/sub kink fantasy nonsense to validate their depression and self-loathing, OR about 1% of the time it’s an actual empowering discussion talking about unfair hollywood beauty standards.

    Lumisal ,

I mean ageing technology (what the person might look like after 5 years etc) was also created for human trafficking victims, and I haven’t seen it really being talked about in many years now since it came out. Seems weird to base something on whether or not you’ve heard of it.

If the family doesn’t have a recent picture of the person without makeup, then yeah, this would be useful, since people can look pretty different without makeup. I’m the only one who has recent pictures of my wife without makeup for example, her friends and parents only have pictures of her with makeup since she normally does some when meeting them. She’s also half Chinese, so depending on how she decides to do her make up, can look way more asian or barely asian at all. If I didn’t have those pictures and something happened, the make-up pictures wouldn’t be as useful in searching for her.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I think this is more about whether or not the creator was honest when they claim that’s why they created the app and it looks like many people here, myself included, are dubious about that being his intention and not just a justification.

    RecluseRamble ,

wasn’t this specifically developed to assist in helping to better identify victims of human trafficking?

The author of the article you linked doesn’t seem to believe that.

    SharkEatingBreakfast ,
    @SharkEatingBreakfast@sopuli.xyz avatar

The creator stated their intent, and the author disagreed. Does that opinion make the creator’s statement untrue?

It’s a weird situation & definitely a slippery slope. Was it his intent? I honestly can’t say. I guess it’s certainly a possibility.

I don’t think this kind of app is harmful in itself. This kind of thing can & will obviously be used/weapon used by stupid shit-heads for their own agenda, but those kind of people will utilize literally anything that exists to justify their shit-head views.

    rickyrigatoni ,

    Notably unbiased person Internet McJournalist

    todd_bonzalez ,

The author of the article is right not to believe this claim. The author can say that their software was intended for whatever noble uses they want. We know from experience that software has mainstream off-label use.

Is BitTorrent really a tool for downloading community content like open films and Linux distros? Because that’s what the creators say it’s for. It’s not untrue.

Is Jellyfin or Plex a tool for organizing your ripped collection of CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays? That’s what the developers say. It’s not untrue

Is Tor a tool for protecting dissidents? That’s what they say it is. It really is that. But is that all it is?

This tool might be useful for identifying sex trafficking victims, just as a nudifying app might be useful for identifying victims of involuntary pornography.

But on the other side of this is that nudifying apps are more likely to be used to create involuntary pornography, and makeup-removal apps are more likely to be used to harass women.

No reason to ban AI technology or anything, but no reason to pretend that tools like this aren’t used for off-label and sometimes nefarious purposes.

prob more detail than you want so spoilerit’s like asking if cumming and peeing feel the same, they are distinctly different but kinda similarish in that fluid is being moved… pooping is like just a bodily function, you push and things fall out… wipe and flush and move on… not much emotion other than relief. Getting ass fucked is completely different, it’s like having one of your most intimate areas opened up and penetrated in a way that simultaneously feels taboo but amazing at the same time. You aren’t pushing you are relaxing and there is a thing inside you hitting parts you didn’t even know you had. Your ass being stretched and held open, if you are properly relaxed it feels amazing, if you are nervous and clenching then it can be painful for both parties. If you have a prostate then getting that hit will force prostate fluid out and you won’t really cum but just sorta start leaking fluid, it’s wild. The term for this is prostate milking… Over all there is just a whole host of sensations and emotions involved in proper anal such that describing it as reverse pooping is not really accurate. Are there overlaps? Yes, but it’s still a very unique experience.

This is what Reddit used to do for me. The weirdest thing Reddit ever did was give me the name of an insect that for years I tried to Google when I would see it and I have legitimately only ever seen the bug 3 times in my 28 years of life. They are so small, so infrequent, and so rare that I thought for years I wasn’t even seeing an I sect but just a fuzz from a dandelion once it changes.

I mean for actual fucking years I could not find the regular name, the slang name (usually changes based on dialect, or even the scientific name. The amount of times I searched for “white fuzzy bug” or “white floating bug.” No matter the combination. I even would tell people, “I remember seeing this bug and I have seen it so rarely I don’t even know if it is real.” And most of my friends would say, “yeah never seen it.” And then that one friend would say, “dude me too.” And then one fucking day I open Reddit and God dammit if I didn’t believe it someone gave me the name. Actual years of feeling insane and thinking those little fuckers were a sign of something higher because of how fragile and cute they are and Reddit not only gives me the name, confirms I am sane but enlightens me on the little bastards they actually are.

I am from West Virginia and if you made it this far well by God if you have seen one then I swear on mother nature you aren’t insane and we are in this together.

And then everybody quoted that because it's weird and funny and it replicates all the viral paranoia about this stuff.

To be honest, text chatbots have done very little to move the needle one way or the other, and all search engines are barely usable right now, chatbots or no. I had some hopes for an AI implementation with speciific training on how to parse search results, but all we're getting is the first couple of results read back to us.

So yeah, I get that people needed a new bad guy after crypto imploded, but it's a shame that the discourse became what it is, in that it both fails to pay off on tech that is actually pretty cool when used right and it leaves a lot of old tech that is getting noticeably worse off the hook.

    yuriy ,

Just throwing in my 2 cents. I swapped to DDG from google about 2 weeks ago and I’ve been very impressed with the results. It feels literally impossible to find accurate results on google if there exists a product remotely similar to your search terms. The last straw for me was having an entire search page populated with similes of my search term. No “did you mean?” or “including results for…”, just straight up random fucken products that happened to have one word similar to what I was searching for.

I’m this close to paying for Kagi. DDG (or bing, really) drops one ball and I’m there. I’m so sick of fighting with search engines. The environment hasn’t changed, it’s just enshittification. And AI was never going to fix anything, it’s just a new and exciting enshittifier.

I was here before search engines and I can live without them again if I have to. Or, you know, with slightly crappier ones if I have to. I survived AltaVista. I can do this again.
