I get that legacy support sucks and nobody wants to do it, but the new product is just an ad serving platform under the guise of being an OS. Maybe try to release a good Windows platform before asking people zo switch to that, just a thought I had.

Norgur ,
@Norgur@fedia.io avatar

But they don't want you to switch to "the new cool stuff". They want you to switch to "the ad serving platform"

Demdaru ,

Every second windows tho. Xp good, Vista bad, 7 good, 8 bad, 10 good, 11 bad…

Angry_Autist ,

And they want 11 to be the last one…

asexualchangeling , (edited )

Can you really say 10 is better than 7, though? 7 maybe better than vista, And 10 better than 8, But I maintain that it’s a downward slope and that the versions keep getting worse overall

Demdaru ,

I…what? Never said 7 was better than 10, nor that quality goes up. Just that every second windows is good.

Angry_Autist ,

To Microsoft, being an automatic ad platform is WHY they consider it better than 10. They have zero incentive to release an OS that doesn’t ad spam or datamine you.

The one thing Apple did right. AirDrop is nice, and I wish PairDrop worked for Bluetooth aswell.

I mean, we already have Nearby Share/Quickshare on Samsung, but it is still kind of finnicky.

redditReallySucks ,

Quick share works on all phones now. Google’s nearby share was renamed to quick share. And there’s also a windows client now

dad gives me a quarter so I can immediately lose in some claymation caveman game. i got a personal panned pizza for reading some books. there’s a pitcher of diet pepsi on the table, i think the condensation looks neat. The waitress vacuums up the straw wrapper my sister missed shooting at me with a rolling sweeper thing as she asks my parents “the usual?”

I miss those days.

When I was in 6th grade a server at Pizza Hut accidentally poured boiling grease on my friend’s little brother. It was an awful injury that literally scarred him to this day. The investigation into the situation revealed that the server wasn’t provided the correct platform for carrying the deep dish, she was bringing out, because they were short, and busy. So they got a big fucking pay-out. They paid the medical bills, including long term cosmetic work, and therapy. They got a big cash pay-out, not sure how much, but it allowed them to recover from their failed business, pay off their loans, and set up trusts for their kids’ early adult lives. You know, pay for school, or whatever they needed to get a head-start on adult life.

One of the things they were given was a card that was used for internal corporate reasons. It was basically a free Pizza Hut card. The cashier would type the number into the register, and it would clear the bill. They were given free food for “life”, life ended up being about 20 years, ending with yet another decrease in their business. So, at least once a week, their family, and all their kids’ friends, would go to Pizza Hut for a big pizza party. During the summer we would often be given the card to get food when they had to be at their business late, which was often. I can no longer smell the particular fried bread smell of their pan pizzas without feeling a little nauseated. Sooo much pizza hut. Some times the local pizzeria would give us a few pies in exchange for letting them order things from PH not on their menu, like wings, so we could get some real pizza about once a week out of it.

In Android just selectively enable wireless ADB debugging and then use ADB Explorer. Easier than plugging the phone in, wireless, and allows access to all folders on the device (including /Android/data/* which is blocked from being accessed using on-device file explorers). Turn it off when you’re done. Boom, wireless data transfer to and from an Android device at way faster than cabled SMB speeds.

Emerald ,

That would work great for me if it had a linux version. Theoretically someone could just use fuse for it

n1ck_n4m3 ,
@n1ck_n4m3@lemmy.world avatar

ADB Explorer is really just a wrapper for adb-pull, you can use that manually on Linux but without the GUI it’s true it’s not quite as seamless.

aBundleOfFerrets ,

Faster than a cable, unless your device has usb 3.xx

n1ck_n4m3 ,
@n1ck_n4m3@lemmy.world avatar

IDK, have you tried to copy files over USB-C/USB 3.0 to a phone? I similarly thought it was going to be much faster than it actually is, but it’s still mind bogglingly slow using MTP – especially with file creation operations. Want to move 5,000 small text files totalling 20MB? You’ll be there for 8 hours, haha.

In my experience ADB is significantly faster than a cable (even USB-C+3.0), even when ADB is connected wirelessly. I typically get 20MBps-40MBps using ADB regardless of whether I’m writing large files or a bunch of small files, where at best I will (and a cursory google search sems to indicate most people will) see 8MBps-10MBps over the cable for large files, and when I’m copying small files (e.g., game roms for ScummVM or something), I will get maybe 1Mbps at the top end. Results are consistent between computers I use to copy, cables I use to copy, and phones I’ve copied data to.

I’m honestly surprised that in 2024 copying data to a brand new flagship phone using a USB cable is as poor of an experience as it is.

I’ve noticed this trend less and less over the years. I have to say I’m pretty happy about that.

Especially when you see how the servers are putting on fake smiles and going through the motions to get it over with. Not saying they should be genuinely happy, just that it shouldn’t be a thing at all. Just serve the surprise cake then walk away.

Famously origin of “Human music”.

This makes me think of the TV series The Neighbors with an alien family living in a gated suburbia calling themselves “Larry Bird” and “Jackie Joyner-Kersee” - real human names to be inconspicuous.
