The planning board’s decision was based on health concerns due to the possible negative environmental impact of telecommunication on the residents, especially the children studying at the school who could potentially be exposed to electromagnetic radiation.

Because that surely would be the only cell tower in town.

Based on what I know of the Switch homebrew scene, I cannot fathom how this would work. Any ideas?

yamanii ,
@yamanii@lemmy.world avatar

This is precisely why everyone is so skeptical of it.

SomethingBurger ,

In the video that was posted, the user testing the card is manually inserting and removing the card in order to cycle through the different games on the cart.

It appears it cannot run unsigned code, as it doesn’t have a menu. This is probably similar to the Sky3DS. It behaves like a real cartridge, so it would only run pirated cartridges. No DLC or homebrew.

caseyweederman ,

Don’t cartridges have unique IDs though? They could just start disabling cartridges by ID and banning any accounts that run them.

If they don’t ‘let’ you use it ‘willy nilly’, someone can make a fork of Android that does, as Android is open source.

The one android phone with it currently (CAT S75) does let you use it for anything, but it requires an additional subscription.

I believe it’s SMS and SOS only through the messenger app. You have to subscribe through the app during signup for a a certain number of messages during subscription.

mojo ,

Yes and it’ll likely be expensive, but it can very much save lives. When you’re very remote and need to tell someone your location, or you need help, that’s where it really shines. From what I hear too, it’s not exactly fast either so probably not for real time texting or chatting willy nilly.

keeb420 ,

afaik both the t-mobile/starlink deal and the apple version of this are equilivent of 3g. So likely you're not gonna want to browse the internet or anything. But if you're a sailor at sea this could be a great way to be able to text. Or if you're in am emergancy you'll be able to call for help.

cassetti ,

There is already a bluetooth device you can purchase that works with most any smartphone - it allows you to subscribe to a text messaging service which uses satellite communication (only a few messages per month if I recall correctly). I forget the brand but it hit the market like a year ago.

I actually use a T-Mobile MVNO, so I don’t have experience with their customer service.

They seem to have the biggest variety of options for resellers, so if you like the coverage but not the customer service, you have options.

    When I played it, it had the same bug as DS3. Every now and then a very short stutter and it had nothing to do with the pc it was running on, it was an engine issue, I think. Don’t know if it is fixed by now but that one really hurt, because a stutter can mean death in those worlds.

    Zoboomafoo ,
    @Zoboomafoo@lemmy.world avatar

    In other souls games, that stutter was caused by invaders connecting to your session. It throws me off every time it happens in Elden Ring for some other reason

    HaoBianTai ,

    I think this one was level streaming related. It only happened during traversal (mostly) and was severe, plenty of YT videos showing it.

    It disappeared entirely once I upgraded to a 3D V-Cache chip (5600x -> 5800x3d).

    SpacetimeMachine ,

    I thought that is a shader building issue.

    addie ,
    @addie@feddit.uk avatar

    Seems likely. It only stutters on Windows - run it through Proton on Linux, where it’s translating it all to Vulkan, and it’s silky smooth. Maybe off by a frame or two as well of course, but it’s pretty much locked to 60 fps in either case on my machine and can’t really check. DirectX seems quite bad for hitching when a new shader is loaded - they’d all be pre-compiled on a console since the devs know exactly what the target hardware is, so if you don’t rewrite your engine on Windows to accommodate it, then you’ll have problems.

    OscarRobin ,

    It has constant awful shader compilation stutter.

    It’s FROM, they still loathe PCs on a personal level. Or at least it always feels that way. They get ordered to release on PC, and they do, but they curse them every step of the way and fuck it up as much as they can without getting fired.

    iheartneopets ,

    So I don’t think this is a specifically Fromsoft issue. Lots of Japanese game companies struggle with that, and it seems to be because the lion’s share of Japanese gamers use consoles, not PC. So I think a lot of Japanese companies don’t have a ton of experience optimizing for PC.

    If I understand correctly something like “touch AI” is already used, at least on keyboards. It’s actually very difficult to touch what you think you’re touching on a phone screen, so your device does some degree of prediction of where you really wanted to touch.

    Future Devs should take note here and develop anonymously and use git over i2p. Develop in private and push code and binaries to public facing mirrors under aliases using tor.

    If you want donations accept monero or something.

    Also make multiple forks during development and just have them scattered all over the place in the event one goes down. So each contributor has their own fork with its own branding or something.

    Dont publish any instructions showing dumping keys or roms in any capacity representing the project. Do it as Joe Random a regular internet user and let it spread organically.

    Tarquinn2049 ,

    The only thing they did wrong was having the key dumping info associated with them. Nothing else needed to have been done different. Without that, they would have been completely legal. Dumping roms is totally fine.

    You want people to know it was you that did all this technically impressive work and problem solving. Had they not done that one thing, they would have been fine putting their names on their work.
