@culpritus@hexbear.net avatar

The article glosses over the real reason for this, which is that Argentina is on an inflation rocket ride due to the new libertarian leadership. Getting paid in currency that is being continually devalued on a daily basis is worse than just getting the beef. China is the world’s largest market for beef.

I'm convinced they would have done so much better if it hadn't been Epic exclusive. I know more than one person who won't play it on PC because of this.
It's a great game otherwise.

chloyster ,

It also likely wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t an epic exclusive (they funded it). I do wish they could have gotten someone else to publish it of course, but I’m thankful the game exists at all, it’s really outstanding

Ah yes consoles 😉 and not missile guidance hardware disguised as consoles. Bet China asked them to do this, so Chinese consumer electronics manufactures can supply war machines to Russia without risking to get completely shutout of the US and EU market.

KairuByte , to technology in SpaceX Might Have Lost 200+ Starlink Satellites In Just 2 Months Shows Data
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Okay, so is this actual news, or just reporting on the fact that starlink satellites have a 5 year lifespan by design? Because this reads like the numerous other articles out there that are ignoring the fact that satellites need fuel to stay in low earth orbit, and that fuel eventually runs out.

I dislike musk as much as the next guy, but let’s not pretend this is something it isn’t.

Etienne_Dahu ,

By the way, what happens to these satellites once they reach their planned lifespan and run out of fuel?

Haquer ,

There is sufficient drag in Low Earth Orbit for the crafts to deorbit without station keeping, meaning they burn up in the atmosphere within a few months/years depending on atmospheric conditions.

Etienne_Dahu ,

Thank you for the explanation!

geosoco OP ,

I get your point, but I suspect there's more here than just lifespan. I don't think we know the reason but the article says this:

As a comparison, only 248 satellites had burned up at the start of this year, so the number destroyed during the last two months is higher than the figure for the first seven months of the year.

If 200 over the span of 2 months is "normal" then I have questions about the financial viability of the project.

KairuByte ,
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

It kinda depends on what we are considering a starlink satellite. They did launch a batch of satellites that experienced some issues, and some of them did come down. Iirc those were new models that were going up for the first time.

That said, I wouldn’t be too concerned about it. Firstly because we are talking about less than a percentage point of the total, and second because once the bugs are ironed out, a different company that isn’t run by a moron will likely step in to do a better job.

serratur ,

Firstly because we are talking about less than a percentage point of the total

(200 / 5000) * 100 = 4%

KairuByte ,
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Ah, fair enough. Not sure why I thought there were more in total. In fact I think there may be less than 5k.

There’s already a sequel planned and being worked on plus a multiplayer game set in the control universe where you play as a ranger of the fbc. And the Lake House Alan Wake 2 dlc will focus on the fbc office in bright falls as that’s where the where investigating cauldron lake from.

Doesn’t even come close to the 15/10 Russia war fleet to Pepsi “payment”

Are you referencing something or is this satire?

In the 90s Pepsi had a contest with prizes and as a joke they advertised that they were gonna give a winner a real jet fighter

That’s a different story. This one is about that time Russia/USSR paid pepsi with old military equipment to get around sanctions. I think they couldn’t actually receive it because they’re not allowed to have that but it’s a funny story regardless. I think someone already posted the link

wow, they “killed” an open source project… did they really think it was that easy?

Sakychu ,

I mean they also got 2.4 mil and they can continue collecting them from new projects

catloaf ,

They haven’t gotten the money yet, and they probably never will get the full amount.

They probably won’t even be taking anyone else to court, either. Ryujinx will probably make major changes or shut down entirely to avoid getting sued in the first place.

kratoz29 ,

and they probably never will get the full amount.

Why do you say this?

sugar_in_your_tea ,

I’m guessing the project was run as an LLC and the LLC will just go bankrupt.

Moonrise2473 ,

That’s on paper. It’s extremely unlikely that they set an LLC with millions of dollars in assets. The reason they set up the LLC was that if they got sued they could settle for any amount, knowing that they would just declare bankruptcy and pay nothing except their legal fees (which, having settled immediately, are very low)

tb_ ,
@tb_@lemmy.world avatar

It possibly seeing a legal precedent is the scary part.

noyou ,

Settling out of court is not setting a legal precedent

sugar_in_your_tea ,

And that’s probably why Yuzu didn’t stand up to Nintendo. They probably had enough areas for Nintendo to attack that fighting it could leave the emulator community worse off if it goes to trial. Why risk the money to fight something unless you’re sure you can win?

noyou ,

Maybe. My guess is they just didn’t want to go through the trouble, since it would have been a long war.

ripcord ,
@ripcord@lemmy.world avatar

The main developers won’t be touching it. That’s a pretty big deal since they were the lifeblood of the project.

Potentially recoverable, but still a big deal.

Second. There’s no chance that a “reputable” site. Like GitHub, gitlab, etc will be hosting any of these projects for long. That’s significant too.

toastal ,

“reputable”

Projects like this should be self-hosted & encourage contributors to set up their own self-hosted mirrors to make sure the code is both distributed & decentralized which users/makers have full control over their platform.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Yeah it kinda is. You can fork projects all day but assembling a team of intelligent and motivated individuals to actually maintain the project is a whole other problem. Add to that the fear of litigation and multi-million dollar lawsuits and I’d say Switch emulation will be all but dead in the near future.

Amir ,
@Amir@lemmy.ml avatar

How is any of that untrue? The pixels do a lot of things that no other phones do, why should the average phone user care about peak performance?

weew ,

because it costs $999.

it only does what a <$500 phone can do, the the only reason pixels can “do what no other phones do” is not capability but artificial restrictions.
