This is why I jumped ship to DuckDuckGo like 4-5 years ago already, never looked back

Coincidentally, yesterday I was quickly setting up a new computer for some testing whilst talking to somebody about another so I was half distracted. I did a search for some package to install and got absolute unusable crap. I didn’t understand, tried again, tried different search parameters and it just got worse, and then I noticed that, since this was a new computer, the browser was using google.

I switched to DDG, and first page first hit was what I needed.

DDG also has been in a steady decline and apparently has been using Bing as it’s back-end now. I’d love to use a self hosted open source browser, or of not that, an open source federated search engine, akin to Lemmy, but I don’t see either coming into existence anytime soon.

Someyhing like searxng? Or what do you imagine?

Kornblumenratte ,

searx is around for a couple of years now.

Vilian ,

DDG always used bing backend tho, what’s happening is bing backend worsening

Karyoplasma ,

bing itself is unusable tho. I get a full page of “sponsored links” before any tentatively relevant search result pop up. DDG at least removes the sponsored bullshit.

JackbyDev ,

For what it’s worth, DDG isn’t perfect either. There are plenty of times I have to use Google instead. I don’t keep track of how often it anything but it’s definitely not perfect.

phoenixz ,

Well, that is what I said. Dog isn’t as great as it used to be

Waffelson ,

it already exists and it’s called Yacy, an open source decentralized search engine

A lot of stuff uses Bing to search, as it’s the largest search engine with an official public API that any developer can just sign up and use. Voice assistants like Alexa use Bing too.

How tf do you even get a water bottle under the brake pedal?

afraid_of_zombies ,

It can be done. I drove Uber part time and a group of girls in the back decided why not drunk water bottle fight. One rolled under as I was going downhill. That is up there with one of the most terrifying moments of my life.

I used the emergency brake and stomped the foot brake as hard as i could multiple times until it was crushed then fished it out.

I no longer drive Uber part time.

Ilovethebomb ,

Drunk girls are the worst.

WldFyre ,

Wait till you hear what drunk men do

KillingTimeItself ,

pedals have this thing where they have space behind them, and if you have no concern whatsoever for safety and yours, and others lives, then you can just slap a water bottle on the floorpan in front of you, and when you brake, that water bottle can roll forward and get caught under the pedal. Leading to restricted braking ability.

    Using food as the analogy:

    Food…Code

    Kitchen…Dev Environment (IDE, PC, etc)

    Serving…Deploying

    ok good so far

When I’m done with code I’m not going to deploy yet I commit and store it on a branch in git.

When I’m done making food that I’m not going to serve yet, I store it in a fridge or pantry.

When I need external code, I grab it from GitHub. When I need ingredients, I grab them from the grocery store.

So I think Food Storage, is the closest analog to git. I have local storage (pantry, fridge) that I can use to store food I have acquired.

Which would mean the grocery store is the closest analogy, but not a restaurant. Or maybe a grocery store with a restaurant.

Knusper , to programmerhumor in Totally logical and expected functionality

Somewhat tangential, but USB-C docking stations, as useful as it is to have everything in one cable, it can also be annoying.

At the office, I often just want to charge my laptop with them, but they also give me a wired internet connection, which, thanks to corporate networking shitfuckery, doesn’t work. So, every time I plug in, I have to disable that wired connection.

Also, recently a colleague had problems getting her headset working when she was plugged into certain docks, ultimately due to a bug in the OS.
Like, alright, that should be fixed in the OS, but that USB-C dock doesn’t even have a speaker attached to it. It’s completely useless that it shows up as an audio device.
And even after we found a workaround to fix her headset, she will now have to switch over her audio device every time she plugs into a dock.

So, basically it’s now one step to plug in the cable, but potentially multiple steps to undo half of what you unwillingly plugged in…

    FrozenCorgi ,

Can’t you just unplug the dock from the wired connection instead?

    Knusper ,

I can, but it’s a shared workplace, so I can’t just leave it unplugged.

    Treees ,

For some laptop models you can disable switching to ethernet in the BIOS.
