Git = bittorrent

GitHub = the pirate bay

Code = content

Even that’s not the perfect analogy but it’s better than the OP.

vinhill ,

Though OPs example is easier for the general population to understand.

CmdrKeen ,
@CmdrKeen@lemmy.today avatar

Yes, but mostly because the general population likely isn’t super familiar with Bittorrent and PirateBay.

A better, yet similarly correct explanation would be to say GitHub is to Git what GMail is to email.

This also doesn’t confuse protocol and content, and it doesn’t require knowledge of piracy.

In the second panel he’s yellow, magenta, and cyan. No green at all. Which is more accurate because color mixing for emitted light is different than reflected light.

tilcica ,

for those who dont know, additive color mixing is used for monitors, TVs cameras and the such that add different colors together to compose new colors (RGB spectrum). subtractive color mixing is used in our eyes, printers, hand written text, etc (CYMK spectrum)

mbp ,
@mbp@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

To add to this, the green that you see is from the offset of primary colors creating the dark patch underneath. Since the magenta is nudged in the positive y direction and the blue is nudged in the negative y direction (and a slight positive x), we get a cool color mixing effect where the dark hues from his hair are present on his neck but it is without the magenta being mixed in. So all we get is the product of strong quantities blue and yellow which is green! Even more apparent due to the situational contrast.

I have one car, it’s 20 years old and I’ve had it since 2009. Sometimes I look around and think, maybe it’s time to get one not covered in scratches with a dent in the back? But then I see posts like this and feel incredibly grateful this little banger has kept me on the road for so long.

grue ,

You could always have your scratches and dent repaired, or learn to do it yourself as a fun hobby. (I’m not joking, by the way: I’ve done some body repair and painting on some of my cars, and it’s kinda fun!)

sheogorath ,

Depending on the country you might not be able to do that. In some countries you have strict emission guidelines where cars older than 5 years need to be certified that they output emission below a certain threshold. It’s good for the environment, but if you live in a place that has shit public transportation it can force you to get new cars and spend much more than required to have a car that suits your needs.

KTVX94 , to memes in Combining two different internet debates

I believe it should be A. People aren’t moving, and the portal doesn’t carry momentum. At most people would be appearing on the other side with very little delay between eachother resulting in the most recently teleported person violently pushing away the last one.

meekah ,
@meekah@lemmy.world avatar

Of course the yellow/orange portal carries momentum. That’s why it should be B.

rog ,

Its just a hole though. If you have a tennis racket with no strings and swing it over something stationary the object doesnt move

meekah ,
@meekah@lemmy.world avatar

With the tennis racket analogy both portals would be moving. In the thought experiment from the image just one is moving, resulting in an unaccounted for momentum, unless the people shoot out the blue portal

PsychedSy ,

I think it’d be B. It has to exit the portal at the speed it entered or you end up with a scunched up human or a stretched out human.

wander1236 , to fediverse in The countries with the most Fediverse servers are rich and former/current colonial powers. One of the best true barometers of the success of the Fediverse is how quickly we can turn that on its head.
@wander1236@sh.itjust.works avatar

I think you’re overthinking this, and extrapolating limited data way too far.

For one, of course historically rich countries are going to be hosting more technology. Tech is expensive, and less developed countries are called that because they’re less developed, which includes electricity grids, internet, economic power, and so on.

Another issue is that just because a Mastodon server is hosted in a particular country, doesn’t mean only people in or from that country can make an account there. Sure, there are some servers that want to keep their communities specific to their local area, but the vast majority have no restrictions. Anyone from anywhere can sign up.

If you’re trying to figure out how to make it so historically poor countries have the most servers instead, you’re going to have to figure out how to fund and manage infrastructure expansion.

It feels like you’re coming at this with the assumption of “every country has the resources to spin up hundreds of social media servers, but they’re just not interested”, which is kind of a weird conclusion to come to after recognizing the historical impact of colonialism and the privilege differences it’s led to.

supersquirrel OP ,

Do you realize how your rhetoric is boxing my opposing viewpoint into being an oversimplification? Nowhere in my language did I imply this was a simple question with a simple answer nor did I request a precise answer of any type.

I acknowledge all of your criticisms, this is a difficult question and I would welcome your input and knowledge if it is along a positive axis not a condescending one that attempts to frame my question as naive and thus fundamentally unserious (independent of whether the details are right or wrong).
