Yeah it’s lip service, but it’s lip service they pay due to feeling like we are a marketable demographic.

They feel that advertising to us as a group and making the haters mad is more profitable than the alternative.

The way bud light handled it, when kid rock started shooting bud light palettes with his machine gun…

This is what you need to know.

Never trust.

BarrelAgedBoredom ,

What’s your point in bringing bud light up? I’m not trying to start shit, genuinely curious. What is it that we need to know? What does “never trust” mean in this context? I can’t make heads or tails of anything you wrote

SqueakyBeaver ,

I’m not op, so I’m just guessing here

I think they meant a sort of “at the first sign of pushback, the companies will ditch LGBT people. Don’t mistake their gay logos as actually support”

Omniraptor ,

Last spring bud light sent trans influencer Dylan mulvaney a personalized beer can as part of a broad marketing push. This drew criticism/calls for a boycott from various prominent transphobes and caused a slight slump in sales. Bud light responded by laying off/“laying off” various senior marketing execs etc, and did not afaict support support mulvaney after it (no loud anti-transphobia pr statement). Very illustrative story of how corporate support of lgbt people under capitalism works

Like SqueakyBeaver and omniraptor pointed out, it was last years campaign Budweiser made with dylan mulvaney. They featured her on some bud light special editions.

Kid Rock made a video with him shooting the beer and the target demographic “cancelled” bud light making a big fuss about it online.

Budweiser was short of apologizing on their knees for their “mishap”, the Creator of the campaign was fired, etc.

People online were pretty harsh with dylan mulvaney. Budweiser dropped her like a hot potato. From what she posted afterwards, i figured they never contacted her or reached out to her in any way, in order to check if she’s ok.

That’s what i meant, they invest in “inclusion” , because it brings them cash. It’s not like humans became enlightened over the past decades. There was progress, sure, very slow progress in all things around being inclusive of others. Corporations are adapting to a demographic that is growing and are potential future customers.

I call this feeling “The Holy Spirit” and no I’m not religious, hear me out.

So there’s “The Father” which is you, in charge of everything.

Then there’s “The Son” which is your Jesus, the bit of you that does shit mostly perfectly without any input from you. The scary example of this is when you drive to work and can’t remember the drive at all. Jesus Take the wheel. Teach your Jesus right and you can trust he’ll do things fine.

Then The Holy Spirit, which is that part of you that sees everything, before the filters are applied, and let’s you know something is off. There’s no obvious reason for it, but there’s something off about this guy and we need to get away from him as soon as possible and never interact with them again.

The Jesus part is the important bit for most of us. Learning to play the guitar? Teach your Jesus. When you’ve practiced enough you can just trust that Jesus will hit the notes while you concentrate on singing along.

When I learned to Juggle I just taught my Jesus how to throw properly so it lands in the other hand.

At work I teach my Jesus how to do the manual labour, do the checks I need to do, and I can concentrate on ripping on my work colleagues.

Granixo , to selfhosted in Does the form factor between 3.5" and 2.5" matter in a NAS server?
@Granixo@feddit.cl avatar

You’ll usually want 3.5" on anything that isn’t a laptop for the price and higher max speed

Coasting0942 ,

And theoretical reliability. Stuff breaks down quicker at smaller sizes says my lizard brain

Blue_Morpho ,

Smaller stuff has smaller mass and therefore can be more reliable.

There were portable mp3 players with mechanical hard drives that were reliable despite extreme abuse.

RamblingPanda ,

Except the mp3 players from Archos, which gave up after setting up. Twice.

yggstyle ,

Man my 6000 was immortal. Outlived 2 desktop drives and survived a car roll while in use. I was convinced they had made some blood pact with Nokia lol.

RamblingPanda ,

I got mine, moved some songs into it and an hour into listening the drive started clicking and the player was dead. Amazon replaced it and it was exactly the same. I forgot what model it was, but the discs were extremely fragile.

yggstyle ,

In general laptop drives were a gamble so it’s not shocking. I’m curious if I got a later batch or something or just got lucky.

RamblingPanda ,

That was one of those 1 and something inch tiny drives. They were crap

yggstyle ,

Maybe we were talking about different units then - this is the one I had:

RamblingPanda ,

Yes. Mine was tiny.

I dunno I RMA’d my Nomad so many times.

Addv4 ,

Smaller stuff has to be more complex to get to the lower mass, which is usually what causes the biggest issues. The hdds in those ipods had some extra stuff to make them more reliable, but even then, move them too quickly and they show it.

Blue_Morpho ,

Smaller doesn’t need to be more complex. 3.5" drives weren’t more complex than 5.25" drives.

A smaller head means a smaller drive actuator. Less mass and smaller size means it can compensate much quicker in response to vibration detection.

Back when full height 5.25" drives were the norm, you couldn’t pick up your PC while running without causing an error. Those tiny CF card sized drives failed but took extreme abuse compared to big drives.

Elkenders ,

I tell my wife 3.5" is more reliable but she’s not buying it :(

Oh man, I remember a Philips mp3 player I had for the longest time as a kid. You could hear the little clicks of the hard drive. Lost it on a hike, unfortunately.

Grippler , to selfhosted in Does the form factor between 3.5" and 2.5" matter in a NAS server?

I think 3.5" are usually priced better per tb than 2.5" drives and performance is usually better too. So unless you feel like burning money for an inferior solution, are have some space constraints that doesn’t allow 3.5" drives, I wouldn’t go with 2.5" drives. They’re more energy efficient though, but you’d need a fuckton of drives for that to make a worthwhile difference in your power bill.

vzq ,

The key here is “better performance at similar price points”. There are absolutely amazing 2.5 drives made for server applications, but they cost so much money you’re better off getting SSD these days.

Speaking of which, you should consider SSD.

subtext ,

Absolutely no shot I can afford 40 TB of SSDs for my NAS

vzq ,

That’s fair.

themeatbridge ,

Man, I remember when Zip Disks were a big deal and a GB was a lot of storage.

skittlebrau ,

One of my clients referred to Zip disks a few days ago. That really sent me back. Only my rich friends had Jaz drives, whereas the rest of us were still using Zip disks and optical media. Those early USB thumb drives at USB 1.0 speeds were also painfully slow.

My portable storage journey progressed from 5.25” floppy disks, 3.5” diskettes, Zip disk, CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, 2.5”/3.5” external HDDs and now portable NVME SSDs.

themeatbridge ,

I remember learning that 3.5" disks were still called “floppy” disks, despite being rigid plastic. My teacher took apart a disk and showed us how the inside was a film, but all that did was encourage us to take apart the disks and make desk toys out of the springs.

AtariDump ,

No LS-120 or eSATA drives. :-)

tal ,
@tal@lemmy.today avatar

Depending upon your storage setup, may be able to make use of an SSD cache drive for a larger rotational drive array, though.

Blue_Morpho ,

Ssd for boot but not cost effective for nas. Nor do I trust their longevity.

FrederikNJS ,

SSD longevity seems to be better than HDDs overall. The limiting factor is how many write cycles the SSD can handle, but in most cases the write endurance is so high that it’s unreachable by most home/NAS systems.

SSDs are however really bad for cold storage, as they will lose the charge stored in their cells if left unpowered too long. When the SSD is powered it will automatically refresh the cells in the background to ensure they don’t lose their charge.

Sunny OP ,

Thanks, yeah i’ll go with 3.5" ones then, only reason i considered it was because of some really good deals. But I’d rather stick with having a uniform set of drives. Thanks for your input!
