Are you expecting that the for-profit college will go back and retroactively rescind degrees? What’s the end-game for re-running the thesis?

TehWorld ,

Great points. Note: I’m not arguing against it as a concept. I’m just skeptical that it’ll happen, and even if it did, there wouldn’t likely be terrible consequences for the accused, especially as that’s what science is… new facts change the outcome vs choosing an outcome and matching facts to it.

TehWorld ,

Article is paywalled, but love the headline. Imagine a future with energy as an essentially free resource. We have a LONG way to go, but just the fact that we are moving in the right direction gives me a glimmer of hope for the future.

I replaced the main battery in a Gen1 Prius. Fiddly. Had to get a strong buddy to help lift it in and out of the car, but we did it in a long weekend. A full set of ‘used but tested’ cells cost something like $750 but that was probably 8 years ago.

TehWorld ,

Actually the low cost part of this was that they weren’t upgraded cells. Just tested-good cells from other battery packs. Most of the time it’s just a couple cells in the bigger battery that have issues, and they take those out of the pool and make a good amount of $$$ because we were required to send back all of our cells. Assuming that of the 26 (iirc) cells that 3 or 4 were bad that’s a big profit margin for sure. The car worked great after swapping them out.

TehWorld ,

The classic response is that you have to capture lightning first to apply to the rick that you want to do the thinking.

TehWorld ,

If it’s even possible. I’ve personally swapped the main battery pack on a Gen 1 Prius. Not easy, but more tedious than technical. Lifting the assembled unit was a hell of a chore but a coulple strapping dudes managed it. Reconditioned cells are available in a lot of places. I’ve had a Nissan Leaf and would get another one, but even finding a battery, let alone any info on swapping it was pretty much impossible.

TehWorld ,

This is like those horrible choice “would you rather” questions. Eat the hot dog, or drink the alcohol.

TehWorld ,

Rip your inbox…

TehWorld ,

I’m thinking that would decrease the chance of problems.

A close friend was raised in the Carolinas. They were taught that the civil war was about “states rights”. It wasn’t until they were an adult that they did their own looking into what “rights” the southern states were fighting for. It really opened my eyes to how the blinders have been put on so many people. I’m 100% sure that I have my own set, but it’s important to remember, and engage these people when you have an opportunity.

TehWorld ,

There better be. Charcoal is semi-burnt wood. Coal is effectively ‘solid’ oil. Cooking with regular coal would be horrible.

For me, it moreso came down to the fact that the church was essentially becoming just a wing of the Republican political party.

Pro-Trump lawyer surrenders in Michigan after DC arrest and Dominion leaks (www.cnn.com)

Pro-Trump lawyer Stefanie Lambert surrendered Thursday to Michigan authorities in connection with her 2020 election tampering indictment, after a wild week where she was labeled a fugitive and spent a night in jail after being arrested in Washington, DC....

TehWorld ,

Easier and cheaper to get a second screen.

A professional video switcher will do this but it’s way more with “DVE” but you’re probably looking at more cost than another TV.

TehWorld ,

With Fox News somewhat on the ropes and a Dominion case left to close out and the general “second tier” nature of all the ultra-right outlets, maybe NBC is thinking it’s time to switch political teams. It’ll take a long time for “Democratic” viewers to realize that they are frogs in a boiling pot, and some people, even current “liberal democrats” would likely move slightly right if they were bombarded with more right wing talking points. If Trump wins, they can finish a pivot. If he loses, they can snap back pretty easily too.

TehWorld ,

I had a roommate in college whose mom would smoke 2-3 packs a day. She’d light a new one off of the dying ember of the last one. Chain smoker.

'A lot of money': Trump owes $87K in interest per day until he pays the fine in his civil fraud case (abcnews.go.com)

Former President Donald Trump owes an additional $87,502 in post-judgment interest every day until he pays the $354 million fine ordered by Judge Arthur Engoron in his civil fraud case, according to ABC News’ calculations based on the judge’s lengthy ruling in the case....

TehWorld ,

Absolutely. Putin is said to be a trillionaire. The difference between Trump’s net worth and Putin’s is “about a trillion”. Putin is just going to purchase the US by bankrolling Trump and the Republican party.

TehWorld ,

Yet, Musk (along with a bunch of financiers) did actually pay 44Bn for something…

It doesn’t take a 4D chess player to realize that .05% of one’s net worth would be a good ROI to own the President (again). Putin has such a deep grasp on not only his own country’s wealth, but it’s also no 4D chess move for Putin to shell-company a few tens-of-billions here and there all over the world before invading his neighbor. The hard part is that Trumps finances are being watched pretty closely, so getting the rubles to him without raising suspicion is the 4D chess part.

TehWorld ,

I do hope you’re correct!

TehWorld ,

I’ve owned 3 or 4 coffeemakers and every single one of them has had a heating element below the carafe. My current machine even has a setting for how many hours it stays on after brewing. The problem with reheating coffee this way is that it takes a good 15 minutes to actually get hot again whereas my microwave takes 60 seconds.

Great! Please make sure that your server system is un-racked and physically present in court for cross examination.

Time capsules with less than 100 years are the dumbest thing.

When the same people who sealed it up are around to see it opened, it’s not a “time capsule” anymore than a couple of boxes at the bottom of the pile in my parent’s garage.

Does everyone learn the same gravity in school or is it different everywhere?

So, I learned in physics class at school in the UK that the value of acceleration due to gravity is a constant called g and that it was 9.81m/s^2. I knew that this value is not a true constant as it is affected by terrain and location. However I didn’t know that it can be so significantly different as to be 9.776 m/s^2 in...

TehWorld ,

Yeah. 9.8 is what I learned. I was generally aware that locality made a difference, but I had no idea that there was that much of a spread. For anything not involving millions of dollars of rocketry and actual satellites a simplified number is likely good enough. Much like Pi, where a couple digits is good enough for most everything and calculating out past 6 digits or so is infinitesimally small.

TehWorld ,

Not to mention the doors and corners…

TehWorld ,

Yeah, maybe something like one company that could aggregate all of the separate services into one subscription. They could use a collective bargaining strategy to keep the price of each subscription down. Maybe they could even bundle together the actual physical hardware and maintain the infrastructure required to get the signals to us as well!

TehWorld , (edited )

1)I generally don’t sweat a ton.
2)The sweat I do have isn’t particularly odorous. 3)My spouse says that they LIKE the way I smell.

I’ve tried antiperspirant a few times but it makes my armpits itch about the same as poison ivy. Last time I had to get some anti-it h cream because it was driving me insane. Even “mild” deodorant causes issues after a few days of wear.

TehWorld ,

Or the other good friends whom I’ve actually asked. The kind who don’t give a fuck about whether they’d hurt my feelings or not.

Which side of government would care? The coproratocracy or the facists?

Probably more complaints about Al-Nasir and his shitty Copper.

I’ve had a line across my hall since early 2020 like some college apartment…😣

TehWorld ,

I’m not willing to use it now, for free… not sure if this plan will incentivize me to join up.

I’m pretty sure I’m Chaotic Evil with 2x 1920x1200, 2x 1024x1200, a 1920x1080 and one 1366x768 but I don’t run any vertical anymore, so maybe not?

The wife has a penchant for taking off her underwear and throwing them as hard as she can at me. They are light, so I don’t mind.

I couldn’t resist… But Wikipedia should have tons of info on exactly this.

I’d expect that Musk would post “condemning antisemitism” but just leave it at lip service without actually changing anything else.

X’s new terms of service insist that tweets are now posts (www.theverge.com)

X’s new terms of service insist that tweets are now posts::X is rolling out a new terms of service on September 29th, and one adjustment is a single instance of “retweet” to “repost.” There are other changes regarding data scraping and class action lawsuits.

TehWorld ,

Gonna go ahead and say that this is the BEST outcome for the rest of us. Employees and vendors for Twitter got the short end of the straw, but society as a whole would be blessed if Twitter went the way of the Dodo bird.

What's a skill that's taken for granted where you live, but is often missing in people moving there from abroad?

I was thinking about that when I was dropping my 6 year old off at some hobbies earlier - it’s pretty much expected to have learned how to ride a bicycle before starting school, and it massively expands the area you can go to by yourself. When she went to school by bicycle she can easily make a detour via a shop to spend some...

TehWorld ,

Fairly certain the shoulder here is referring to the season. The in-between fall and winter and winter to spring.

TehWorld ,

It’s a difficult spot to be in, and clearly Putin’s fault, but are these countries grain farmers supposed to go under because they can’t ship the grain out the normal terminals?

People in 3rd world countries are depending on calories grown in this part of the world to literally survive, so there’s no easy answer here.

TehWorld ,

The fact that you get to loot and pillage notwithstanding.

TehWorld ,

I wish I could get a NEW 90s era Honda cheaply.

TehWorld ,

I’m pretty much the target for this, I travel a lot for work and it’d be nice to have a place to “office” out of, but the competition here is:

  1. Free - Even after checking out of my hotel, the lobby always has a corner or two to work in and decent wi-if. 1a) I have status at one chain and they’re always great about just letting me walk in to any of the chain and suck up some internet and plug in my laptop, even if I wasn’t staying there. Bonus is that they usually have coffee!
  2. Free - my car. With tethering my phone to my laptop, I’ve done more calls than I care to admit by just finding a random shady place to park the car and get to work. 2a) The park (when it’s nice enough outside)
  3. Free- Libraries - The public library system is great. Not a good place to take calls, but if you need a place with a chair and internet to do some work, it’s an option.
  4. Free - Client’s offices. I have a good enough relationship with a number of clients that I can ask to take over an empty desk (one even has an empty office with a KILLER view of the city that they’re just fine with me taking over for a couple hours.
  5. Cheap - Coffee shops. Buy a drink (bonus) and grab a seat for a bit. They’re super abundant and you can almost always find one close to your next meeting.

I’m certain that WeWork has its benefits, but competing with free is pretty hard.

TehWorld ,

McGill?

For a client meeting I prefer a nice lunch place or just to meet at their office? I do have a FEW clients that work out of their homes. They’ve always been happy with whatever coffee shop is close to them.

TehWorld ,

All good points. I have a nice home office and a desk at HQ that I can go to. I guess I’m not the target market.
