Snassek , to nostupidquestions in Yesterday in Kroger (a supermarket for you non-Americans) I saw a bunch of cans of potato salad. Why would someone buy canned potato salad?

I would assume for increased shelf life. This is German style potato salad and I have seen the cans in stores for at least 30 years.

lemonmelon ,

That’s one hell of a shelf life…

Rolando , to nostupidquestions in Yesterday in Kroger (a supermarket for you non-Americans) I saw a bunch of cans of potato salad. Why would someone buy canned potato salad?

I have a very elderly relative. If you can only eat food that is not too firm, and you want easy-to-prepare stuff that you can keep on the shelf, and your tastes are kind of old fashioned, this sounds great.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I could definitely see something like that, although I think you’d probably get something that tasted better with a blended potato soup and there’s a bunch of canned varieties. I suppose if someone like that is jonesing for some potato salad (I wouldn’t blame them, potato salad is great), this is the best way to give it to them.

themeatbridge , to nostupidquestions in Yesterday in Kroger (a supermarket for you non-Americans) I saw a bunch of cans of potato salad. Why would someone buy canned potato salad?

They might be using it as a base for something else, like breakfast hash browns.

Canned potatoes take on a flavor I don’t like, but there’s no denying the convenience of having shelf-stable cooked potatoes ready to eat or cook with. I keep canned tomatoes in the pantry for a similar reason. I prefer fresh, but if it’s going into sauce or stew, canned is a time saver.

Should have used Linux!

ChaoticNeutralCzech , (edited )

The cause is a malfunction of the Crowdstrike monitoring solution, which employees use to spy at anything ever done on company hardware. They do have a Linux version and it has been reported to cause kernel panics (not sure if during this incident).

But yes, Windows on public information displays is dumb.
Infamous “Let’s finish setting up your PC” screen

Dudewitbow ,

it was because crowdstrike themselves notified that this specific instance did not affect their linux nor osx distributions of security, and was windows specific.

CalcProgrammer1 ,
@CalcProgrammer1@lemmy.ml avatar

Should have not trusted a third party to install proprietary code into the kernel. It’s not a Windows issue directly, they have a Linux version too, but anything that allows third parties to put proprietary code into your kernel and automatically update it without your approval is untrustworthy.

SatansMaggotyCumFart ,

Counterpoint: Windows bad.

CalcProgrammer1 ,
@CalcProgrammer1@lemmy.ml avatar

I can’t disagree with you there.

Damage ,

They have a Linux version, but this happened only to the Windows one… Coincidence?!

qjkxbmwvz ,

Probably coincidence? It sounds (???) like this is a pretty simple fix on Windows.

The number of times I have borked my Linux machines so they wouldn’t boot is, well, greater than zero for sure. Any operating system can be bricked to the point of requiring manual intervention by software with elevated privileges.

Rentlar ,

The simple fix: turn it off and on up to 15 times

The simple fix 2: delete system32

Yes, coincidence.

pearsaltchocolatebar ,

It’s not like they haven’t caused Linux outages in the past.

ohmyiv , (edited )
@ohmyiv@lemmy.world avatar

This in particular is a Crowdstrike issue. They suck as much as windows. Crowdstrike has had issues on Linux before:

You can actually change this in your settings. You will absolutely be able to find something of your taste. Usually your phone generates a few combinations for you to choose from based on your wallpaper. I do agree that this particular combination in this screenshot is ugly however.

cannedtuna OP ,

Hey we had flat screens back then, they just took up the whole floor space and it took 2 people to move those projection TVs

vaionko ,

Laptops also had LCDs. Just don’t move your mouse too fast or the screen can’t keep up and it’ll disappear

areyouevenreal ,

You’re thinking of passive matrix displays. Those were the cheaper option but active matrix screens did exist.

vaionko ,

They did, but you had to pay a pretty penny to have one of those

ChaoticNeutralCzech ,

Maybe even split-flap displays, or printed advertisements
