Geez it’s just so incredibly sad to me that facebook has survived this long and even THRIVED while probably being the worst version of what they do, and being the most evil doing it

mysoulishome OP ,
@mysoulishome@lemmy.world avatar

True. Those of us on social media at the time moved from MySpace moved because it was a step up as far as keeping in touch with friends, sharing photos and links. It was uncluttered and well designed and no annoying advertising. Just worked. It’s a clusterfuck of awfulness now.

two_wheel2 ,

It was certainly fun back in the day. I was in middle school when I noticed everyone around me starting to use it and it was a bit of a mixed bag for me… at that point not everything was social media so it wasn’t such a hellscape and was a bunch of fun, but even then I think it had a negative impact on me, my friends, and our social lives. I don’t know what it was like before, but seeing that a popular kid had a huge number like 100 notifications on their Facebook could not have been healthy—I don’t think that kids need analytics on how socially successful they are

Looking at your posts, it seems like you’re really into ecology/farming/wildlife. I think Lemmy is currently seeing the biggest growth with its tech and tech-adjacent communities. Whether it’s because it’s a little more complex to use or because that’s just the demographic that knows about it more, I can’t say for sure.

It reminds me of the earlier days of Reddit (which I didn’t even participate in), when it was almost solely a programming/tech community. As it grew in users, so did the variety of communities. I think Lemmy is going to be similar.

I applaud you for building up the communities you’re a part of. I hope that you can look back in a few years and realize that you sowed the seeds for something that grew much bigger.

Treevan ,

Dont I know it. I was being facetious with the comment because I know what these places are like having moved from specific niche forums, watching reddit expand (avoiding Facebook), and then here. I’m also an early adopter to Tildes but decided to not even attempt in there because of the “tech bro (tech person)” problems you’ve illustrated.

Rooty , to fediverse in Dutch government starts own Mastodon instance as reaction to the instability of Twitter

The fact that a state government used a commercial service to inform the public is absurd, and this was bound to happen eventually.

Doodoocaca ,
@Doodoocaca@lemmy.world avatar

Why is it absurd? The best way to reach people is on the platforms they use. People are not going to install some government app or use a special website to see those kinds of messages.

Koen967 ,

It is absurd in the way that the previous NL-ALERT I received had a link to Twitter for more information that I couldn’t open, since I don’t have a Twitter account. When Musk decides to do something crazy with his platform it could have a direct impact on the communication between the government and the people. It is safer to use a self hosted platform so you can always reach the masses when it is needed.

joel_feila ,
@joel_feila@lemmy.world avatar

i can get alerts on my phone from the government. plus you could have people sign up for text messages rather then follow om Twitter. I get that Twitter wasca super fast way to get announcements out to the public and it would go to the people that actually care. But itvis bad for vital communication line to be own by a third party that can’t make money since what happens when it shuts down

sparr ,

They could have used a mailing list or an rss feed or half a dozen other solutions that don’t require a special website or government app.

TheThirdPoliceman ,

I don’t want my government spamming my inbox with updates. I don’t know how active government Twitter accounts tend to be but I suspect there are plenty of things that are significant enough to announce via some platform but not significant enough that they merit an email.

RSS would be great and I fully support governments using it. But sadly in this day and age it would reach significantly fewer people than Twitter.

sparr ,

“this day and age” is rapidly coming to a close

gloriousspearfish ,

Because it is a platform governed by a 3rd party entity in a foreign country. That platform can ban and censor citizen, based on foreign cultural values and arbitrary rules, limiting citizen access to their own goverments information.

The platform governments choose to use for public information and debate should always provide open and public access to that information.

A government should not require its citizen to create a Twitter account, and thereby requiring them to provide their personal information to a foreign country, just to be part of the public debate and to get public information. That is just plainly wrong.

Doodoocaca ,
@Doodoocaca@lemmy.world avatar

That’s nice but all of that is irrelevant. You can view tweets without making an account.

Also, not one government solely relies on Twitter to disperse information, it is just one additional channel. They also use their own websites, apps, TV and radio.

gloriousspearfish ,

There is some kind of account-wall on Twitter. I have been hit with a popup asking me to sign up or log in plenty of times, in order to be allowed to read the tweets I was trying to read.

So twitter is not allowing everyone to read the tweets without an account.

Skitals ,

Governments have been PAYING to inform the public via commercial services for… ever? And requiring citizens to do the same. Have you ever seen a public notice in a newspaper? At least posting on Twitter is free (for now).

Google made a huge mistake shutting down Google+. If they had built it out to integrate with Youtube, where people could have a space to Tweet, have a Main Page feed like Facebook, and post videos all in the same platform, they would have dominated the market.

I still have a hard time believing that no-one has created a platform that encompasses all of those things. Meta is doing it piece-meal but it’s all disorganized. It should be one unified platform.

That’s why I hope some developers start working on a way to integrate Lemmy and Mastodon and like… PeerTube together into a single frontend. I’d love to be able to manage my Mastodon posts and BS on Lemmy in the same website.

Raxiel ,

HP Smart does suck, although the cheap HP printer/scanner we picked up in 2020 for home schooling has been pretty reliable. A couple of the colour nozzles clogged after an extend period without use, but it’s on the £1 a month cartridge rental so I just kept re-running the cleaning cycle until it worked again.

Facebook and Google+ was always about friends family and local before any random and starnger interaction becomes relevant.

Reddit and Lemmy is all about strangers. Oftentimes you dont even want people to know you or care about that. So userbase is way easier to create without feeling as if it was too small.

Facebook started locally and slowly created circles until the entire world found their friends and families and joined themselves

I honestly loved the concept and would probably have been a customer if I could afford it.

Contrary to your description, it was mostly celebrities doing custom greetings for fans, sometimes as themselves, sometimes in character and usually bought for people as a surprise gift.

Amongst others, there was Jim Rash wishing a Community fan a happy birthday in character as Dean Pelton and dozens if not hundreds of short to medium length videos of Dave Mustaine from Megadeth recording super wholesome and sincere messages for specific fans.

Can you honestly tell me that doesn’t sound great?
