For someone who’s into niche tech stuff, I found myself going back to Reddit from time to time when I’m looking for info. I wish this isn’t the case.

mycroft ,

I appologize for deleting all my posts. And I don’t at the same time. Maybe try asking here in more general communities? Everything doesn’t have to come from a boutique subreddit.

Sir_Simon_Spamalot ,

I was talking about stuff that was already there. A bunch of specific questions that most people wouldn’t think of.

An example would be Thinkpad. More often than not, when you search for a solution for your problem, it would yield some Reddit links on the first page.

couragethebravedog ,

I’ve found that my friends who don’t use Reddit, rarely see Google results linking to Reddit. I always see them, but I use Reddit a lot so.

Just finished binging the 12 Monkeys TV show, thats just variations on an oops loop. If you seduce Hitlers mom you’ll just end up being the father figure he never met. If you strand him in Nepal then either Hitler or any Austrian who witnesses you doing the timey-wimey dance will just blame an international cabal of time traveling Jews for it.

unions , to memes in But I love death

This meme changed zero minds but made a few vegans feel pretty special.

snek_boi ,

Maybe not this single one, but if there’s a running discourse that shows veganism is perfectly common and normal, more people are willing to become vegan. This is part of the nudges we humans are prone to.

Johanno ,

Well I mean I can imagine on living without meat. But I can’t life without cheese. I mean what meaning does life have if you can’t eat cheese?

r1veRRR ,

This meme really only makes sense in response to something. I’ve definitely heard many non-vegans complain that a vegan diet is restricting. Most of those people do only eat like 3 veggies ever.

That being said, it’s a meme, not a philosophical treatise.

norawibb ,
@norawibb@sh.itjust.works avatar

Vegans aren’t doing this to feel special, stop projecting. We just want people to stop harming animals and the only way to do that is to keep talking about it. Of all the responses vegans get, this is the most annoying one to hear.

abraxas ,

I find vegans tend to have less empathy for their fellow man than we meat-eaters have for animals. It comes across as smug (and let’s be honest, it’s less insulting to call them smug).

norawibb ,
@norawibb@sh.itjust.works avatar

That is the most insane sentence I’ve read. Vegans aren’t slaughtering and eating you. What empathy do you have for animals you choose to exploit and kill for taste preference? Vegans want people to stop doing a bad thing, that doesn’t mean we don’t care about those people, but it does usually mean that we have to argue with them.

abraxas ,

That is the most insane sentence I’ve read. Vegans aren’t slaughtering and eating you

Do you actually think you’ll change anyone’s mind by calling their well-conceived ethical frameworks “insane”? THIS is why you get the reputation of being smug. My life’s knowledge, my grasp of philosophy, it’s all worthless shit to you because I am morally convinced that it’s acceptable to kill and eat animals. It doesn’t matter why I’m convinced that (and I’ve learned the hard way it’s not worth anyone’s time to discuss the reasoning or the why’s). I am beneith you.

Calling vegans “smug” is nicer than calling them dehumanizing and ignorant.

What empathy do you have for animals you choose to exploit and kill for taste preference?

As I said in another comment, proselytizing zealous vegans like to strawman non-vegans as all sitting there with a piece of bloody steak on a fork saying “I know some poor cute fluffy animal died a painful death for this but I LOVE the taste of murder”. That’s not us. If you can’t see that, perhaps the first step in your recovery is to actually start to.

Vegans want people to stop doing a bad thing, that doesn’t mean we don’t care about those people, but it does usually mean that we have to argue with them.

As do I, and I have taken a lot of abuse from vegans over the years standing up to those bad things.

And more… That is Word. For. Word. what that guy on the subway says about my gay friends divorcing each other. Word. For. Bloody. Word.

norawibb ,
@norawibb@sh.itjust.works avatar

I didnt call your ethical framework insane, I’m talking about your statement saying you have more empathy for animals than vegans have for you, which is beyond ridiculous to say. You literally strawmanned my argument, I didn’t appeal to cuteness or scary words. It’s a logical question that you just didnt answer. Taking ‘abuse’ from vegans… maybe we are just convinced its morally okay, or does being a victim not feel good to you? As for the last thing you said, I have literally no idea what you are talking about.

ParsnipWitch ,

You do realise that meat-eaters eat animals that were killed for them to be eaten? Please explain to me how this is more empathetic than posting a meme that triggered some meat-eaters.

abraxas ,

You do realise that meat-eaters eat animals that were killed for them to be eaten?

Yup. Animals that lived lives in the first place because they were going to be eaten. Why should anyone have an ethical problem with that? But honestly, I don’t think it’s just “were killed for them to be eaten” to you. I live in a deer population control zone. Hunters have a critical task of preventing deer overpopulation from devastating the area. Got any problems with the venison steak I had last week from deer that HAD to be killed?

Please explain to me how this is more empathetic than posting a meme that triggered some meat-eaters.

More empathetic? Because I’m not an anti-natalist. I know those animals would not have been born if not farmed. This is not a vacuum choice between “cows die” and “cows live”. It never was, and it never will be. I know that most of them live better lives and die easier than their non-domesticated counterparts. Ever watch a cat play with a mouse, slowly torturing it to death? My local farm (plants) have animals that do exactly that every day with the goal of killing off pest animals so they won’t destroy the harvest (a single pest animal like a squirrel can destroy 40 or 50 tomatoes in an hour).

Let’s go another way. Statistically, odds are pretty good that my death will be 100x worse than how a farm animal dies. So no, me being ok that death exists in our world is NOT a lack of empathy. You don’t get to make up my morals for me. The way I see it, giving farm animals a peaceful life is the height of empathy… so I look at you (your words) “triggering some meat-eaters” and note that statistically many of the people you go out of your way to “trigger” are going to end up dying long and painful battles with cancer. My view of empathy? Give them just a LITTLE bit more bloody peace while they’re alive.

Here’s my empathy. I fight for animal right laws. I strongly supported the free range chicken law that just passed in my state. I reject unethical and inhumane ways of treating and killing animals. But I’m not uneducated. I know how farming works. I know how the delicate relationship between agriculture and horticulture, while not perfect, leads to less death and less environmental impact than EITHER side of those alone.

Vegans are letting some crayola-colored dream be the enemy of good. And it’s nothing more than flat-earther, tinfoil, antivax gibberish to me. And I don’t care as long as they leave people alone.

T0rrent01 , to news in The temperature in China hit 52.2°C (126°F)

Something I’m noticing is that while America continues their pattern of climate denial and destructive hyper-individualism, China - for all its flaws - seems to be leading the charge on the single greatest existential challenge of our time.

China is rapidly expanding renewables and green tech. They’re on track to become the world’s renewable superpower. While Americans absentmindedly whine and complain about society improving, China gets right to work on constructing a green national infrastructure to actually address the root causes of the crisis.

China understands collective action and planning are the only way humanity can overcome existential threats. China’s top-down governance, however authoritarian some claim, efficiently marshalled resources to minimize devastation during the COVID pandemic, but what’s possibly more important is their collective culture, the populace’s eager willingness to listen to the authorities, and make personal sacrifices for the benefit of society as a whole. None of that “freedumb” nonsense or pearl-clutching. Imagine if the US mandated decisive actions, not “choose your own experiment!”

This is serious; we cannot rest on our laurels and we cannot go back to brunch. We haven’t the luxury of half measures. Rather, we need the appropriate sort of complete and holistic mobilization asap to transition to greener, more sustainable models. To survive impending eco-collapse will require global equity, not privileged nations hoarding pie while the rest burn. We’d be wise to learn from China’s example. Obviously they’re not perfect - no one is - but I think their climate policies reveal what truly ambitious climate action looks like: bold, large-scale interventions that prioritize the collective good over individual freedoms.

PeckerBrown ,

As the CCP seems to want to own the world and everyone in it, it only makes sense that they want to save their toys from the flames. Well, as long as they aren’t Muslim, dissenters, a sovereign Taiwan, or anyone else that they don’t like.

I realize that this is a kneejerk reaction, but your post’s core is still ‘America bad, China good, so bend over like a good sheep, stupid’.

Valid concerns, but still opportunistic propaganda disguised as concern for the world, so perhaps the message shouldn’t be delivered via tankie.

That being said, try to stay cool, bud.

Seriously though I’m kind of sick of it and China’s lying as they make more and more coal plants and have mini environmental disasters like the rent-able electric car trend that so many companies did just to make bang over buck from the CCP over it that failed during covid.

China is not your friend nor is the friend of the world infact it is actively harmful to both human rights and the environment at large.

china has a rapidly aging populace, an unsustainable birthrate, and far too many peasants to support - they’ve got a very small window of time to prepare for the collapse of the country. when it happens, they’ll retreat, eastwards, to where the larger cities are (which isnt in the western 4/5ths of the current borders). that region you’ve highlighted will be abandoned - it doesnt really matter if it’s 22c or 52c. presumably the russians or the indians will pick it up, but probably wont settle in that area.

superpower though? lol no. regional power in southeast asia, at best. manufacturing is leaving china as we speak. in 10 years most of our “made in china” stickers will be “made in nigeria”, or “made in argentina”

wathek ,

Don’t underestimate China’s power to fuck things up for everyone to ensure it’s survival. The CCP has shown it’s willing and able to do anything they deem useful, regardless of the human cost. Uncontrolled powers in this day and age are absolutely terrifying.

I switch back and forth between Chrome and Firefox but always end up sticking with Chrome for longer:

  • screensharing via Firefox freezes the entire computer
  • FF sync is too slow between devices
  • FF does not allow VOD streaming above 720p (except YT obviously; Chrome works up to 4k!)
  • both are memory hogs but at least you get responsiveness in Chrome
  • FF on Android does not support tablet layout
  • FF on Android keeps refreshing pages when changing tabs
  • FF password manager on Android does not work when needed outside the browser in 99% of cases

I wish I could switch to Firefox

I never use a password manager and a tablet so I can’t comment on those, but for everything else, what kind of devices do you have to run into those problems? Even my shitty laptop from 2016 that is on live support can run Firefox without issues. Are yours from the last century or something?

And “FF on Android keeps refreshing pages when changing tabs”? Dude, that’s called resource management, even Brave and Chrome do that if you have 20 tabs opened, you expect a damn phone to be as powerful as a normal average freaking PC?

Even my shitty laptop from 2016 that is on live support can run Firefox without issues. Are yours from the last century or something?

2018 i7 Zenbook with 24GB of ram. Of course it “runs” Firefox all fine, but it’s just these little things that force me to switch back to Chrome because I encounter small, but key issues which make me unable to continue working in it

And “FF on Android keeps refreshing pages when changing tabs”? Dude, that’s called resource management, even Brave and Chrome do that if you have 20 tabs opened, you expect a damn phone to be as powerful as a normal average freaking PC?

I have 8 gigs of ram on my phone so I wouldn’t expect this to happen with just 2 tabs open especially since Chrome does not do that, at least not every time I switch between tabs, even within seconds.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand how shitty it is for Google to monopolise the internet and web market and I would love to be able to permanently switch to Firefox, but let’s stop acting like Firefox is perfect, because it just isn’t. Sure, neither is Chrome, it has its issues beside privacy as well, but all in all performance- and usability-wise Firefox is just inferior.

0Xero0 OP ,
@0Xero0@lemmy.world avatar

I have 2 laptops with 8GB of ram each, a PC with 16GB and a phone with 6GB and non of them has problems, I even have 10 tabs open on my phone and non of them refreshes unless I manually do it. I haven’t run into a single issue with FF on any of my devices for my 3 years of using it. Just what kinds of bloatware do you have running in the background to run into those problems?
