I can confirm that other than the contrast and saturation being tweaked slightly because I can’t stand when the color temp feels off in my photos, it’s completely unedited, it’s up there, and has been since I moved to that town when I was about 6, idk if it helps as proof but here it is on google streetview lol

Jokes on programming. Hated life before being forced into it…

Edit: it meaning programming. This isn’t supposed to be that edgy.

Asafum ,

Just try being uneducated and working in a dead end factory job while having hated life all your life anyway!

Much fun! -46/10 would never recommend!

I wish I was forced into programming… I tried on my own and just don’t have the mind for it, I find it incredibly boring. All my friends are in the field and all work from home wherever the hell they want to live. I’m stuck in a VHCOL area with shit income and 0 potential to increase it :(

sfxrlz ,

Yeah well I was „forced“ into it by an injury and one my parents working at the university. I never finished my degree so in that sense I’m also uneducated.

I didn’t have the mind for Uni stuff either esp. the maths stuff. There are so many areas. I just liked doing webdev stuff in my freetime and that landed me a few jobs.

Asafum ,

I’m sorry you’ve had to suffer an injury! From what I understand, your experience now and your interest outside of work counts for more than the paper degree so if you do choose to continue that path I wouldn’t worry too much about being uneducated. Good luck, I hope you find happiness in whatever you do!

sfxrlz ,

Thank you very much! Yess school has never been for me but I’ve only been diagnosed with adhd when I was 21. so I’ve always struggled. I don’t know if it’s the perfect place for me, I’m still struggling from time to time, but let’s be honest who doesn’t. I never thought I could work 8 hours when I was younger. But here we are. So hopefully you can also find something you enjoy doing. And I wish the best for you too. Thanks again!

kautau ,

Yeah that sounds way more enjoyable, but first you need the 250k and up salary that a principal engineer at MS makes for 20 years, then you have plenty of equity to focus on whatever your hobby is

GissaMittJobb ,

Average 350k according to levels.fyi.

I was expecting higher for principal tbh

kautau ,

I think MS like other big tech companies has started to run out of “senior” positions without paying more so many people just end up as “senior” principal engineers which is basically “this is as far as you can go if you don’t want to get involved in management”

dejected_warp_core ,

“this is as far as you can go if you don’t want to get involved in management”

Yes. That exactly. This typically comes with a nice perk: Principals are supposed to have the same clout as lower-level managers. Which is to say they usually report to Directors or even the CTO in some organizations.

Another one is “Independent Contributor” which is similar but, as the name would suggest, is very self sufficient and does not work on (or for) a team. They’re basically one-man engineering shops and are expected to perform well everywhere in the company’s tech and talent stacks. As a result, ICs are very rare.

st3ph3n , to memes in Costs Less? When That Happened?

They costed less back when the competition was the IBM PC, which cost as much as a car back in the 80s. Hasn’t been true for decades now.

peopleproblems , to linuxmemes in Seeing big companies take advantage of BSD or MIT licensed projects without sharing their contributions will always pain me.

Something I don’t get paid enough to understand - what constitutes contributions, and what’s the definition of selling the software?

For instance, I don’t think I’ve worked on a project where we have made changes to the source code for security policies (much quicker path to update immediately if something gets flagged). But I don’t think I know of an instance where we sell our software as a service - as far as I know it’s largely used to support other services we sell.

Except now that I say that, that’s not entirely true, we DO have a review board that we have to submit every third party library to and it takes forever to hear back but we have occasionally gotten a “no can’t use that” or “contract is pending.” So maybe I’m just super unaware of who reviews the third party software and they review the licenses.

AA5B , (edited )

We have a scanner that does that on every build.

It blocks builds for dependencies with

  • licenses not acceptable to Legal
  • serious or critical vulnerabilities.
  • political messages, even if you agree with them
  • we may also add a criteria to block non-release dependencies.

As a developer, you’re free to use anything that works

I have yet to figure out how my company views contributing back to open source. I don’t know of anyone actively doing that, but it turns out we host a few originals of open source. I’ve been trying to improve development processes, get tools and dependencies up to date …… but then I ran into things where it’s a bigger change because of the downstream opensource dependencies and because it’s not really owned by the company

I assume that’s printed because there may be cases where nuts may get mixed in with the peanuts, which are a legume, and not actually a nut. Also, corporations sometimes have to say weird shit so as not to get sued.

Kraven_the_Hunter ,

So it’s a thickener then? Sticky is like a melted marshmallow, molasses, or asphalt sealer.

I use solid shampoo in general, but when I previously used liquid it always lathered right up and did its thing. Never noticed anything sticky about it.

Moobythegoldensock ,

That’s just marketing for idiots. You just laughed and bought it anyway, but a startling percentage of people probably bought it because it said that nonsense on the label.

Bertuccio ,

People can be deathly allergic to peanuts, legume or not, and that tends to coincide with allergies to nuts.

There are regulations that say foods that may have nuts must be labelled that way because of that.

There’s no reason for the regulations to add clauses like “unless the name of the product has ‘nut’ in it” because it’s just simpler for everyone to be consistent and put the same label on everything, no matter how “obvious” people who won’t have to go to the hospital if they eat the wrong thing think the name is.
