I don’t know if all these recent jet memes are people just joking around or are you people actually convinced private jets are the problem?

Taylor swift, and every single billionaire alive could be flying 24/7/365 OR NOT and it would make absolutely no difference to fighting climate change.

The main polluters are industry and farming.

All this other shit around are just distractions keeping you from actually going after the people that are causing our crisis.

I don’t know if it’s astroturfing or what, but it seems like it’s deliberate manipulation to keep people inactive.

You memeing on Tylor or using wood straws, or recycling your soda can does fuck all. A single paper plant will dump out so much co2 and pollution that will negate the effort of millions.

MacNCheezus OP ,
@MacNCheezus@lemmy.today avatar

Well, none of that matters anyways when China now emits almost twice as much CO2 as the US and is basically single-handedly not just absorbing all the rest of the world’s reduction efforts, but increasing the global output enormously.

Anti_Iridium ,

Double the emissions for 4 times the people? Damn that’s pretty efficient in comparison.

jj4211 ,

While that’s efficient by comparison, the atmosphere doesn’t really give us a break for per-capita adjustments. Yes, the US is more irresponsible per capita and they need to fix that. However China gets more bang-for-the-buck in per-capita improvements when it comes to the actual environmental impact.

Depends on whether we are talking about where to optimize for best impact, or whether we are talking about fairness of blame.

lemmesay ,
@lemmesay@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

the data you shared only shows half the picture. if you take into account cumulative emissions, the US isn’t doing any good. it’s responsible fit a quarter of emissions to date.

evranch ,

Past emissions are just assigning blame, future emissions are all that matters. USA emissions have peaked, China is growing exponentially. That’s a problem.

TokenBoomer ,

Blame matters, when the world’s leading economy at the time did fuck all to remedy the situation.

CheeseNoodle ,

I think you mean deliberately sabotaged attempts at climate talks for decades.

lemmesay ,
@lemmesay@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

the US(and Europe) emitted tons for centuries and became developed. and now when others want to do the same, the US goes bonkers.

and don’t talk about alternatives, since the developed world can’t even give 100 billion dollars to developing nations they promised years(in 2009) ago.

MacNCheezus OP ,
@MacNCheezus@lemmy.today avatar

That’s cumulative as in “from the beginning of time” (as far as we have record allowing us to estimate). It merely proves that the US has had a head start in all this because they industrialized at a large scale far earlier than China. But as you can see, China’s curve is literally steeper than anyone else’s, having already almost caught up to the EU in a mere 50 years.

DingoBilly ,

A lot of it is political at end of day.

Taylor Swift is looking to be a supporter of the Democratic Party in US, so the Republicans are running targeted attacks on her to reduce credibility as the election is coming up.

It’s nothing new but just be aware that people posting these memes may just be bots/paid marketers essentially.

Not sure about others but I like this color scheme

RunawayFixer ,

It’s a definite no from me. The color scheme and that floor, just no. The stove sticking out, also a definite no.

All the cupboards also seem abnormally shallow to me, as if large plates would not be able to fit in the hanging cupboards. But maybe my perspective is confused because of a larger stove than I’m used to.

For me, that entire kitchen would have to be replaced after buying. We don’t know what corners this house flipper cut though, I would not trust this place to be done well.

stebo02 ,
@stebo02@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

The colour scheme is ok and is even used a lot by brands, but it doesn’t work at all for this kitchen. I can’t believe the kitchen company even agreed to it. As in, I would imagine they’d warn them it’s gonna be f*ing ugly and only go through with it when they insist.

Goodie ,

I could… survive this layout.

But when selling a house, you want to appeal to as many as possible. And this kitchen does not have wide appeal.

callouscomic ,

And that need for wide appeal makes every house boring.

tryptaminev ,

I would argue that there is many ways to preserve wider appeal w.o. it having to be boring.

Heck even in this kitchen if all that was wrong was the paint job, you can fix that in a weekend.

But it is the floor and working top, the shape of the cabinets, the poor tiling and walls, the mismatch of the cabinets and stove, the lack of appliance space, the lack of windows…

Goodie ,

You can, but it requires more skill and more effort.

Skill and effort are often in high demand and low supply.

I mean, historically if you are black or a socialist or something else considered inherently dangerous by US conservatives than yes, something like this is unfortunately as absurd as it sounds, enough to trigger that kind of action. You have to be someone they already find suspicious though, not some rando on the internet.

Police are the dumbest and most violent demographic in the US.

BilboBargains , to lemmyshitpost in Get to work, crackheads

Using vehicle velocity as risk assessment method is fucking dumb. Might as well put that copper to better use.

Zagorath ,
@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

No it’s not. Speed is a very significant element of road safety. At lower speeds, you can stop in a much shorter distance, and if you hit someone their chance of death or serious injury goes way down. Braking distance is proportional to the square of velocity, and reaction distance is directly proportional. If hit at 50 km/h, a pedestrian has a 90% chance of death. At 30 km/h, they have a 90% chance of survival.

At lower speeds, you’re also far more likely to notice something that might require you to stop or slow. Your cone of vision at 60 km/h is 40°. At 80 it’s 30°, and at 100 km/h it’s 20°. A different source I found says under 50 km/h it’s 104° and at 65 it’s 70°. Whatever the specifics, lower speeds are much safer.

This isn’t to say that speed cameras are the best or should be the only method used to ensure road safety. Narrowing roads, adding furniture by the roadside, and increasing the complexity of the route, are all good ways to reinforce a lower speed limit by reducing how safe drivers feel driving at high speed. But speed cameras are a useful supplement to that, for those drivers determined to be irresponsible.

BilboBargains ,

Why is high speed highway driving safer per km if vehicle velocity is a ‘very significant element of road safety’?

The problem, as ever, is retards driving fast on slow roads and slow on fast roads. The camera doesn’t discriminate, it triggers no matter the context. It will trigger the same way for a racing driver with lightening fast reflexes in perfect conditions as it will for tired grandma with cold treacle reaction time driving on snow.

Don’t believe their lies.

Kecessa ,

Because highways don’t have stop signs or lights or people in slower means of transportation sharing the road with cars.

When accidents happen on highways they tend to involve more cars and to be more destructive too because of the speeds involved.

friendlymessage ,

Both risk of collision as well as risk of injury / death if a collision occurs correlate heavily with speed, there’s literally no better factor than speed to consider. Of course, it’s not the only factor, that’s why we have safety and license requirements for vehicles and drivers as well.
