No doubt that’s appealing to some (one example is the USA civil rights movement in the 1960s, especially with states conforming to federal laws that mandate desegregation of schools) but I think another advantage for the privileged is the lack of competition for good jobs, study places etc… If 50% of your peers are kept in slums then just by biological outcomes (lack of nutrition and sleep) the odds are very much in your favor. Throw in the psychological effects of poverty, mass incarceration, addiction and you have a situation like a running race where half the contestants have a broken leg. Fear of a level playing field might be another factor in why the privileged don’t want equal rights. BUT, imagine if we had 50% more people working on a cure for cancer etc.

what kind of apps cant be updated through playstore/fdroid?
it’s not that they can’t be (maybe some apps I use can’t) but rather that I don’t like some things about F-Droid. One of the big things being unreliable app updates. They are often significantly outdated compared to GitHub releases.

I used to look to Reddit when big news broke because it was always on the front page within minutes. This past year there have been a few times that big news stories weren’t even on the top few pages. I gave Lemmy a try, and it feels just like reddit from 2013. I love it. I’m home.
I never experienced reddit 2013 but reddit’s front page is gone. They’ve swapped out r/all for r/popular on new reddit, videos and screenshots are everywhere instead of links and they’ve even renamed themselves to “the heart of the internet”
I still go to Reddit for American politics, my cities sub, and /r/nfl.
But I haven’t made a single comment and treat it more as a news aggregator than a proper community. And even that is happening less and less as I get more comfortable with the pacing of the community here.
On Reddit you can make a clever comment at the right time and get thousands of upvotes and sidebar conversations. It’s great for a shot of that sweet, sweet dopamine.
On Lemmy, I rarely get more than 5-10 upvotes, but the conversations are meaningful and nuanced.
People are realizing that Lemmy is not a 1:1 drop-in replacement and are adjusting their expectations and behavior accordingly. Hopefully we’ll hit a critical mass soon.
I don’t think it was intentional, the dev seemed to be struggling with health-related problems and possibly burnout. But yeah, definitely a depressing moment for an otherwise really cool project.
From the article it sounds like her health took a huge downward turn. Hope she is okay, and even if the project is dead Id like confirmation at some point that she isnt.

Ehh, if someone can make more than me by doing a 6 month course, I say good for them.
Sure, I’m likely to have a deeper understanding with my 4 year degree, but like… the more that person gets paid, the easier it is for me to negotiate my own salary.
I’ll never call for anyone to have their wage cut just to make myself feel smug. I see this all the time in the minimum wage “debate,” and it drives me nuts.
I’m definitely not agreeing with the joke either, I find it confusing at best because someone who finished a boot camp and got a job as a software engineer is still a software engineer.
IMO education plays a smaller role in software development proficiency than aptitude does. But I’m biased, I’m self taught - no boot camp nor college.

I completely agree. I’m glad I got my education, but in my day-to-day work I rarely do anything that couldn’t be done by a motivated and self-taught coder (and even then, who knows).
That said, my job right now is pretty standard coding, I’m not like, designing CPU chips or anything like that, where the “science” part of computer science is a lot more relevant.
I figured, but wanted to clarify in case others saw it that way 😅.
I assume the thing a degree usually covers that a self taught lacks is accepted best practices, teamwork, and alot of principles that are better learned before diving into it. So a lot of bad habits to unlearn.
IMO, in today’s information world a degree isn’t necessary for learning, only as proof of learning (which is still very relevant). But a formal education also puts the tools you need to practice in front of you. Software development is an easy field to learn and prove your skills in. Chip design you’d definitely be better off getting a formal education, though you still see people making microcontrollers in games like Minecraft without formal education.
Imo the main thing my education provided was that it forced me to learn the “boring” stuff that I might not have bothered to learn otherwise - especially not if I was focused on learning practical skills to land a job. Things like approximation algorithms, Haskell, all sorts of math, etcetc. Things that I will likely never use directly, but that inform my decisions just by being aware of it.
It also helps a bit with imposter syndrome to have that piece of paper, at least for me.
Neither of these are what I would call strictly necessary, though, for sure.
The fact that most universities will graduate CS majors without ever teaching them how to use a debugger, build system, or version control system shows how useful they are to actual engineering work.
The problem isn’t the CS curriculum, it’s people getting a CS degree when what they (and employers) want is some kind of Software Engineering degree.
Computer Science teaches the foundational math and science of computation, and in that respect I found it to be very useful and informative. I don’t really need to know how to use Visual Studio to prove the limit of K for some algorithm.
Besides, there are so many tools out there that we might as well just learn them on the job anyway.
I hate it when someone with these lights is in the passing lane behind you, and their lights reflect off your side mirror directly into your eyes. The worst is when they’re only going like 102% your speed, so they linger there unless you adjust your own speed to change their placement relative to you.
Or when you are both at a stop light facing each other in your respective left turn lanes. Not only are their insanely bright LEDs directly facing you but you are also both at a slight incline, exacerbating the angle of brightness. And you have no choice but to look ahead because you need to watch for oncoming cars/pedestrians crossing, to know when it’s safe for you to make your left turn.
Not trying to be racist but it’s almost always a man and a woman who are both White - and probably a Black side character if they are feeling generous.
Hollywood’s (meaning movie and TV producers in general) default is white and straight.
The hetero norm is changing slowly, but the white norm is still very much a thing. Typically for a movie to feature a predominantly POC cast, it’s directed by a POC and listed as a POC movie, rather than just… well, a movie.
Medicare, Military, Social Security, Minimum wages and bailouts for banks and billionaires. All forms of wealth distribution but god forbid your country actually implement national healthcare in a way that truly benefits everyone.
