The problem is “indistinguishable” levers.
In the strict sense, if there was a lever you could see first, they would not be indistinguishable. They should not be distinguishable by any property including location

Consensus is probably not.

  • We don’t have transition forms
  • We probably have young Torosaurs (which are not Triceratops)
  • Holes in the skull would have to form atypically late for ceratopsidae

How can people even use android without adb shell?

Redjard ,
@Redjard@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I guess adb backup was before my time. I did use adb to transfer my apps when I last restored a twrp backup. In perhaps a similar manner to what that did, going by the name. But I did use adb root for that.

Otherwise, I use it to set a lot of otherwise inaccessible settings, like making the back gesture a lot thinner than intended because my touchscreen can handle it, or forcing 120Hz everywhere. I can also set my dpi there without anoying apps.

And ofc I use it to uninstall system apps I don’t need.

After initial setup I do all of that in a root bash session in termux admittedly, but if I hadn’t rooted my device I would still want to do most of that using an adb shell, as most of it doesn’t require root (besides maybe the restoring backups part).

I also use shell environment to semi-automatically transfer media files for certain processes, though I’ll probably move that over to syncrhing at some point.

The main remaining advantage is the ability to automate things on my phone from my pc, I don’t see a lot of those as replacable unless my rom installs kde connect as a system app and they add an immense amount of functionality

Shame they lost the display, that was the main benefit of the Xperia line for me.
Regular ~400 dpi screens look terrible and pixelated after being used to 650 dpi.

Guess I’ll have to hope another high dpi phone with headphone jack releases before mine dies.

[solved] Can't install KDE Initiary? (lemmy.world)

Hiya, I’m trying to install KDE Initiary as I’ll be travelling soon. Heard this was a good travel planner on the Late Night Linux Podcast, however when I try to install the app I get the message as seen in the picture. Anyone got any idea of how I could this to work?...

Redjard ,
@Redjard@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I’ve had similar problems with kde apps on fdroid. I think they are rebuilding very often and that somehow gives a decent chance they are chaning the file you are downloading. So the store is correctly identifying the apk is not matching the info of the repo, because the repo is outdated compared to the file.
I suspect droidify had outdated repo info while fdroid did not. A refresh would have probably made it work on droidify too.

What is the actual plan?

Navalny:

I like the idea of anti-Putin voters going to the polling stations together at 12 noon, at noon against Putin.

Well, what can they do? Will they close the polling stations at 12 noon? Will they organize an action in support of Putin at 10 a.m.? Will they register everyone who came at noon and put them on the list of unreliable people?

It had long been clear the election would be neither free nor fair: Putin would be the only real candidate standing, with all his prominent critics either dead, imprisoned, in exile or struck off the ballot. But by simply showing up at the appointed hour, Russians could voice their disapproval and expose the vote — intended by the Kremlin to deliver the ultimate acclamation of Putin after his assault on Ukraine — as bogus.

Even with OCR, couldn’t your copy at least in theory be laced with strategically placed minor word changes? Say throughout the book you pick 30 spots to change a word without changing the meaning of the text, or you introduce a typo. If every copy gets a different set of those that would be a unique identifier.
I think I have heard that being done with imperceptable changes in films sent for showings in theaters.

In essence, if that where possible someone could build an api and donate his ID into it that answers all the authentication requests for everyone. There needs to be a way to ensure different users use different IDs, which necessitates a bunch of tracking.

And that in the ideal case

Redjard ,
@Redjard@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

To be able to catch that, you need tracking. Some identifier to determine if you had 1000 authentications from the same source or different ones.

Been paying a bunch on my rooted custom a13 rom in the past 2 months. 1 single magisk module (Play Integrity Fix by chiteroman) was all it took, simpler than it has been in a long time. I have full safetynet or 2/3 play integrity reliably, which to my understanding is all google can reasonably enforce on modern devices and android versions for a while to come.

So with sadness I must say I can’t use google pay at all … cause they killed it. But google wallet (formerly google pay, formerly android pay, formerly google wallet, formerly google checkout), works just fine

Redjard ,
@Redjard@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Indeed. I have found an article which I hope I can simply keep bookmarked to make it a simple task following whatever the next method may be.

But I have also found things calm down considerably over time, google seems to concentrate their resources on recent android versions. Once a15 or a16 are out for a bit, I probably won’t even have to update the module anymore.

All my older rooted phones have access to everything, even after years of not caring at all.

Redjard , (edited )
@Redjard@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

You can use Simple Play Integrity Checker on IzzyOnDroid (fdroid repo) or the play store. It also checks safetynet.
If gpaywallet works that would indicate 2/3 play integrity if your android is recent I think, so it might be unrelated to the api. 3/3 isn’t enforceable yet afaik, too many legitimate devices can’t pass it.

Apps can still bring their own root checks, but magiskhide should allow you to pass those.
Unless the app is quite nasty and checks for the mere presence of apps that don’t do much without root or xposed, in which case there are also modules that allow you to limit what apps other apps can see being installed (really seeing installed apps should be a permission, but sadly it isn’t on most roms yet)

Just like any other user through a history containing high-enough-quality interactions.
It is a flag set manually, so a malicious/undercover bot would not have it set. It’s more odd than suspicious.

I did look into your comments and saw no bot-like ones at all, which is why I asked. Is it like a stylistic decision or are you procrastinating actually developing the bot?

There is a cool easy-to-show fact that you can never make something hotter than the light source my focusing its light.
Since otherwise you could take heat and divide it into a hotter and colder region, decreasing entropy without using energy.

Redjard ,
@Redjard@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

The easy to show part was the second sentence of my comment.

This is really useful physics trivia, because the basic truth is easy to show from a simple law, but the detailed explanations go quite in-depth.

With lenses, you trade bewteen angular accuracy and light density.

For a challenge, try it with LEDs. Where do you find the source “temperature”, you can get from focusing an LEDs light?

Redjard ,
@Redjard@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I’ll try to take a more nuanced and in depth look.

As a start, I’m relatively sure the main use of a large chunk of agricultural land is solely food production. A cursory search gives data like this image
global land use
from this page.
It’s reasonable to assume some of the plant waste of food crops feeds some of the livestock, but if that much land is exclusively used for animals it would seem reasonable we could at least double the human plant food production with a reduced animal portion in that land use.
From a pure energy efficiency perspective animals are around 10%, so if you take half of produced plant calories and use them for animals, that will result in 10x fewer calories of animal products than the other half of the plants. This lines up with the energy spread by end human food product, which seems to be something like this:
this is a shitty image link, that will probably break in the future. sry

By the raw numbers and that coarse approach we expect 75% ⸱ 10% : 25% ≈ 1:3.3, the actual data seems to be slightly worse at 1:4.

So it seems to me we are using something like 25% of the land area to produce 80% of the food, just by not passing it through animals. And if you are right then some of the animal calories are even supplemented with the plant waste of those 25%.

The raw energy approach is actually quite a good approach by now, because we can use technology to transition most things into each other. You can pass plant waste into animals and loose 90% of the energy, or convert cellulose into (digestible) sugar and get the full energy. Or use it for other things that take energy like drug production. Using the plant waste on animals still brings that opportunity cost that means more land is used in other places to get the cellulose for those alternative uses, or to produce sugar the old fashioned way from more dedicated crops.

Traditionally you had land that you could not use for agriculture but could use to graze goats, you had plant material you could not use for anything but feeding animals. Animals were our bioreactors to transform that material or land into usable products. Now we have better chains of use.

The energy approach will finally be complete when we can turn plant material straight into animal products, with methods like lab grown meat or artificial milk, but we are not there yet. When we are, the energy balance of those should be close to that of plants and this entire problem simplifies greatly.
