Hawke , to linux in what is the equivalent of Windows Active Directory in Linux?

AD is basically LDAP+Kerberos, plus some tools to manage system and user configuration using LDAP.

So for Linux it would be those two tools, and roll your own tools for config.

Or just use Samba which handles a lot of this in the same way as AD.

Jayb151 OP ,

Thanks for the response! Can Samba handle things like group policy as well?

That should get you going on a near peer feature set to AD

FireTower , to showerthoughts in I wonder how many US babies have been named Donald in the last few years and may live to regret it.
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think people 20+ years from now will instantly jump to Trump when they hear Donald. Just like how if you meet George you don’t think of Bush.

ech ,

Yeah, Adolf really doesn’t bring anyone notable to mind.

FireTower ,
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

Trump may be a very poor candidate, but he didn’t kill 13 million people.

ech ,

Let him have another term and we’ll see how he measure up. And he’s up to a few 100k so far in my books.

DragonTypeWyvern , (edited )

1: Yet.

2: That isn’t even the sum of the Holocaust, much less combat casualties from the USSR alone which are absolutely on his head.

Edit: Tbf, the Holocaust numbers only beat that if you include Soviet POWs being genocided in the prison camps, so that is kind of double dipping.

Cornelius_Wangenheim ,

Yeah, he only killed about 1.4 million.

Diplomjodler3 ,

Dammit, Donnie! These are rookie numbers! You gotta get those numbers up!

Flax_vert ,

Actually curious, what is that figure?

Cornelius_Wangenheim ,

Number of excess deaths from COVID.

Flax_vert ,

What counts as excess?

Cornelius_Wangenheim ,
Flax_vert ,

Excess deaths are typically defined as the difference between the observed numbers of deaths in specific time periods and expected numbers of deaths in the same time periods.

That’s pretty horrific. I have an American friend explaining to me as well how he could be plotting a fascist takeover

LemmyRefugee ,

Estimates are between 50 and a 100 million people. For example USSR is said to lose around 18 million people in that war.

Diplomjodler3 ,

Not yet. He’s certainly working on it.

Cethin ,

I would suspect that people can do basic math and realize why someone was named Donald if they’re born near today. It might not immediately jump to mind, but it also wouldn’t be subtle. I would bet no one else is naming their child Donald unless it’s a family name.

Just out of curiosity, are you willing to share some/all of the things you’re still having to resort to dual-booting with Debian for?

sharpiewater OP ,

not dual booting, they are running on completely different computers. But my main problem is a program called Hamachi not working correctly. I use it for “lan”-gaming with friends on games with dead servers.

admin ,

Hamachi could be replaced with your own WireGuard VPN server, just your friends would have to set up their clients.

auroz ,

Tailscale could also work, if they’re looking for something with a little less setup difficulty. I haven’t used it myself as I’m happy to tinker with WireGuard, but it’s supposed to be quite easy to get going and I think the free tier isn’t too restrictive.

Nikki ,

personally love zerotier, all of the above work well though from my experience!

As God intended!

skaffi ,

I was using Winamp right up until I made the switch to Linux last year.

Fortunately, Audacious can use Winamp skins, too, so I’ve still got that Winamp 2.x classic look going.

Use zerotier one, it’s much better.

AceFuzzLord , to piracy in How big is YOUR collection?

With just shows in general, I have a fair amount. Don’t know the exact amount of cartoons, but I got a 1TB external drive almost full of them, a single live actions show from the 90s, a single live action movie, a few animated films, and a whole comic set. As for games, I don’t count by size, nor do I know how many since they’re not stored on a drive. I specifically got a 2TB external drive (both drives Seagate) for if I ever find more shows/whatever I wanna collect, but I have yet to find something I desperately want.

That, and I still need to use it to back up files so I can switch operating systems on my desktop.

Edit:

No idea how much music I’ve downloaded from yt using things like NewPipe, but I got a good amount. I’d assume this counts as piracy too, since I’m certain the people in charge of the music industry don’t like you being able to do that.

Hi, I actually wrote a guide on how to do this on my blog: nullish.cat/blog/disc-rip/The gist of it is just MakeMKV (and ImgBurn if you like ISOs.)

AnarchoCummunist ,

Good ol’ ImgBurn. Still use it to back up really important things to Blu-ray to this day.

About 14TB. Which reminds me, gonna need a new drive to drop in the NAS soon.

azron , to selfhosted in Server Monitoring software recommendations

Munin is a tried and true solution. It installs on the server creates graphs and makes it easy to see a stair step graph to problems like out of memory.

I’d also highly recommend installing atop and having it collect stats every 1 to 2 minutes. You can go to a crashed server and step through what was running in a “top” like interfsce. I install atop on any server as a means for post incident diagnosis.

@lemmyng@lemmy.ca avatar

While LDAP/Samba are the canonical answers for “what is the AD equivalent for Linux”, I would also like to point out that you could save yourself the time to maintain this by using an AD SaaS solution like Jumpcloud or similar that supports Linux. Given that you said it’s for a church with about 10 computers, there might be a discounted or even free option (eg under the nonprofit category).

Subtex , to android in Buying a Pixel 7 Pro, install Custom ROM or stay on default?

Personally I stopped custom roms a while back. I’m not hardcore in the anti-google camp though.

If you are, obviously custom roms will be all you should be looking at. Tons of good recommendations in this thread already.

If you’re not in this camp though, the default pixel experience has been great for me and might be for you. I find it the least annoying of the oem experiences (not cluttered in features I’ll never use, simplified settings menu where I’ve never had to use the search on since it all made sense etc).

I’d say use the stock rom for a few weeks. If you hate it, custom roms are always there for you.

idealotus , to retrogaming in What are your favorite Nintendo 64 games?

I agree with most of these lists. I would add Banjo Kazooie! Just finished a replay of it (N64 version, not XBLA) and it mostly holds up.
