This is the kind of election post that’s necessary.

I hate seeing “Remeber to go vote!” posts the week before an election as if that’s all you need to do. In most places, you need some kind of enrollment activity before they let you vote on the day, bring ID, etc etc.

Dude, if you say you want to do it you would have already done it. So, it’s either deep down you don’t wanna or it’s something else.

So if you want it we are waiting your urls 🤙

Findmysec OP ,

Yup that’s the problem, my mind is screaming at me to do it but I feel lazy every time I touch the configs. It’s like I lose motivation.

Maybe I should take a long break

WeAreAllOne ,

Or you might feel failure or bad critique? Look within you.

Findmysec OP ,

I mean there’s no strict deadlines for personal FOSS hosting projects, so I don’t think so.

Maybe I’m just lazy

MoonMelon , (edited )

I also work well under deadlines but perform horribly without them. Upon reflection I realized a lot of my motivation is related to not disappointing others and/or embarrassing myself. Neglecting personal projects makes me feel like shit, but it’s missing the public humiliation factor so it won’t get me moving. A possible solution is to create deadlines for yourself and share them with people who will hold you accountable, or to whom you at least feel accountable. I also try to imagine how I will feel in a week, month, or year down the road when I still haven’t done THE THING, and realize that it’s only going to get worse the longer I go. This isn’t 100% successful but it does work sometimes.

This isn’t that rare. It is half the reason people hire personal trainers. The military also uses this technique, by framing failures as letting down your comrades rather than yourself.

This is a tricky thing to balance because using negativity and self criticism can become destructive. My grandma used to have a coal burning stove for heat. She said it was awful because too little coal and it would go out and was really hard to re-light. But too much coal and it would explode and blow coal dust all over their little house. I feel like self hate is kind of like that oven. Unfortunately nothing else has ever truly worked for me.

Also, I should add, one thought that brought me some self-forgiveness was the evolutionary roots of laziness. If you think about it, as an organism, if you’re well fed and in a good location your best bet is to chill under a shade tree until something comes up. As humans we are kind of cursed with extra simulation cores in our brain that can constantly iterate every single permutation of the future, and that leads to anxiety, but laziness is actually a virtue from an evolutionary perspective. So cut yourself some slack now and then.

Findmysec OP ,

I see. I think it’s the same case as me, I need realistic deadlines to really focus.

Unfortunately, I don’t have anyone that I can say this to. Any automated methods to induce such a feeling?

MoonMelon ,

Hmm, interesting question. I would say social media but it’s toxic for so many other reasons. Perhaps an online virtual assistant? Or maybe charge yourself a monthly or weekly fee into some account until you complete the task? Since it’s purely for yourself, whatever act “costs” you should be enough. A friend of mine was a huge proponent of making physical lists at the beginning of each day. He would then move any uncompleted tasks to the next day’s list, and the act of physically writing it was enough for him. He insisted it be on actual paper. This guy was super accomplished so it must have done something for him.

Time and distance are really the only things I’ve found that work. It really sucks to be rejected, but you are deserving of love and respect. On the bright side, you have the opportunity to put all that time and energy you put into your crush into yourself. Do something nice for yourself, you deserve it.

I commend vote.org for doing everything they can to get people registered, especially in areas where one side does everything possible to make the voting process as difficult as functionally possible…

I wouldn’t say best, but Movim (xmpp based) has a personal and shared blog feature, which the latter being somewhat similar in concept to Telegram channels, even though the UX is more blog like.

user_naa OP ,

It is like what I need. I registered on conversations.im but can’t access neither my account nor created channel from Mastodon. How to fix this?

poVoq ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

I think you are confused. conversations.im is not the best place to register for using Movim. Better chose from join.movim.eu

Also, XMPP is not ActivityPub, which Mastodon uses.

user_naa OP ,

I thought XMPP compatible with ActivityHub. Then I need something else

poVoq ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

There is an experimental bridge between the two, but yes you are probably better off looking for something else for now if you need Mastodon compatibility.

olafurp , to linux in How bad is Ubuntu?

Snaps sucks, canonical sucks, Amazon integration sucks, KDE updates are years behind which also sucks, pushing snaps over deb sucks, pushing snap over flatpak sucks.

However, Ubuntu is a great distro. Incredibly stable, very well tested and polished. Installation is super easy and hardware support is very good, unless you got some very new hardware.

I recommend Ubuntu to a lot of people even though I’d never use it myself. Most people just want their computer to work.

Blackmist , to linuxmemes in Wine acronym

It kind of is though.

VonReposti ,

Not really. It is just translating the Windows system API calls into Linux system API calls. It’s not emulating Windows, it’s an entirely different implementation that doesn’t necessarily match that of Microsoft’s implementation. It had it own workarounds to make buggy code work.

You wouldn’t call a Java Virtual Machine an emulator of another JVM either, they’re just different implementations of the same specification.

Blackmist ,

Thing is, I do kind of think of a JVM as an emulator for a processor that doesn’t exist.

WINE kind of blurs the line of a traditional emulator by having the executable run natively on the target machine’s CPU, but everything it does in regards to dealing with the host OS, the display, disk access, etc, is emulated as far as I’m aware.

A theoretical PS4 or Xbox One emulator running on x86 hardware could be just as much of an emulator as WINE is.

bitfucker ,

Maybe depending on how far you take it. A CPU instruction is different from hardware to hardware, but a function signature would stay the same no matter the underlying architecture. If we want to go through that logic then an interpreter can be thought of as a form of emulator.

Gakomi ,

Yes but an emulator emulates both the CPU and GPU of the consoles and in the case of PS4 even thought the CPU is x86 the biggest difference I can think of is the GPU drivers.

AbsoluteChicagoDog ,

I’d call a JVM an emulator. To the end user they’re the same.

honestly my personal stance on this might be very different from yours, but here’s a short overview:

  • people seek security in life. people don’t want to be left out or left alone; this is why people get jealous. You need to find a stable social and economic basis in your life. Otherwise, you start clinging to other people, and that can’t be good.
  • people seek social contact. that is why people go out and find other people that they’re attracted to. that doesn’t mean that you have to spend time with exactly one other person. make contact to lots of people, so there is enough diversity. think of it that way: you wouldn’t eat the same thing every day, for the rest of your life. you need some changes sometimes.
  • do not get clingy. remember that people can fail on you for any reason, be it accidental death or sickness or simply their psychological fuss. Don’t assume that a person that you spend time with today and love very much will be here for the rest of your life. Assume that the relationship might end or decrease in intensity within a month or three. then, build your actions on these assumptions.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this, but please remember:

  1. Be Nice. You might think your cranky comment isn’t a big deal, but when there are dozens of them it can get pretty overwhelming. The dogpile is real.
  2. [email protected] is not a “free speech zone”. I think Beehaw admins have been pretty clear on this, but our overriding concern is community building and creating a corner of the internet where people are good to one another, not creating yet another site where people can say whatever they like regardless of the harm it might cause others. I understand this might clash with what some see as a fundamental philosophy of the fediverse, but we disagree. This isn’t the place to re-litigate those disagreements.

I had to get a player without any internet access or camera awhile back to use while working with confidential information, and ended up getting a 2nd Generation Fiio X3. Was a bit expensive, but was the most recommended for the price at the time, was a lot cheaper than the Sony, B&O and Astell+Kern it was compared with in reviews, and still works well years later. I just use a microSD card reader to update it, there’s a driver to install if you want to use it as a DAC otherwise it’s not needed
