prettybunnys , to linux in How bad is Ubuntu?

Ubuntu is a perfectly usable operating system, there is a LOT of elitism in the Linux community.

De gustibus non est disputandum

In matters of taste there is no dispute

CrabAndBroom ,

Yeah that’s kind of where I’m at with Ubuntu now. I personally got tired of using it because I find Canonical tends to fixate on whatever shiny thing they currently think is cool (Unity, that hybrid phone/desktop OS thing, Mir, now Snaps), then they let a lot of other stuff stagnate, get the thing they’re fixated on to the point where it’s almost really good, then they get bored and ditch it and go chasing something else.

But none of that’s a killer technical issue necessarily, if you don’t care about that you can still install it and have a good working/stable computer that’ll still do probably 99% of what you need it to.

thedeadwalking4242 , to linux in How bad is Ubuntu?

You’d be surprised how many people don’t care about business practices. It’s actually kind of alarming

Schmuppes , to nostupidquestions in How did orthopaedists started to use plate and screws to fix broken bones ?

They probably thought “How do you repair a chair? With nuts, bolts and tools”. I bet if TIG-welding bones was an option, those dudes would do that.

neidu2 ,

Or even better: Mig weld. Although, instead of metal, I guess it would be even better to some how use Calcium, so as soon as someone invents a CIG weld, this should be explored.

HubertManne , to asklemmy in How do you get over a crush?

Don't know how old you are but I have had to several times and can't think what to say. You just put it behind you and move on. Be proud you stepped up and took your shot and accept the reality that it did not work out. If your a male this is just a fact of life in general. I will tell you that you did the right thing though. I have had friends who would position themselves in the friend zone for years with the thought they would just get to know them and realize how perfect they were or something. Its an aweful situation and I am glad I was able to avoid it as it was common in my peronality type of guy. You may not be a guy but I can really only give a guys perspective.

OurToothbrush ,

Be proud you stepped up and took your shot and accept the reality that it did not work out. If your a male this is just a fact of life in general

??? This isn’t a gender thing?

HubertManne ,

males of my age generally had to make the move. its possibly different now. I can count on one hand the girls I knew from college and before who asked a guy out first.

n0m4n ,

My realization, now, was that they did. I was too clueless on picking up cues to realize it.

OurToothbrush ,

I feel like even within the straight paradigm women do a lot to express interest and can still feel “shot down” when those signals aren’t reciprocated, outside of also asking guys out

HubertManne ,

oh yeah. Flirting is totally different. I would say growing up girls flirted more than guys.

Mubelotix ,
@Mubelotix@jlai.lu avatar

Same in France among students. Males are expected to make the move

rollmagma , to nostupidquestions in How did orthopaedists started to use plate and screws to fix broken bones ?

There’s human fossils where it’s clear they poured molten bronze or something into a mans skull to patch the broken bone. Using metals to mend bones has been a practice since ever basically.

Atin , to nostupidquestions in How did orthopaedists started to use plate and screws to fix broken bones ?

I thought setting the broken bones and putting the limb in a plaster cast until it healed was the standard.

I would assume that a surgeon at one point saw someone repairing wooden framing or such and thought that looked like a good idea.

Kolanaki , to nostupidquestions in How do you drive in Cyberpunk???
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

Before the “upgrades” to driving, it was all about picking the right vehicle as only most of them felt like that. But now everything but a bike feels awful to drive.

Before they removed it, the best way to get around was to just sprint, slow time, jump and then bunny hop to gain infinite speed.

user224 , to android in How can I power down this phone?

Once you get into recovery manually, is there no “Power off”? It seems there should be:
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/D0dCpnJFkLQ/maxresdefault.jpg
Can you get there?

sgibson5150 OP ,

I only have the two options, Try Again and Factory Data Reset. The first just reboots the device and I return to the same two options. The second asks for a confirmation, then it shows an error (/system/bin/tune2fs is missing) and takes me to the “dead droid” screen briefly, after which it reboots and we’re back to the same two options.

scsi ,

I’m familiar with the news about the brick - in the past I’ve had this problem (I think it was a bricked… pixel 2?) and faced similar power off issues. Keep trying what you’re trying but in various ways - I vaguely recall that I had to press volume up first and then hold power or something like that (meaning pressing them both at once or power first didn’t work). One of the various combos you’re trying is supposed to be the one that forces it off after ~30secs of holding but a fuzzy memory reminds me it was real finicky to actually get working. Worst case scenario, just let the battery die. :(

DaTingGoBrrr ,

If you hold down the power button for 10-20 seconds it should turn off. At least that’s how it works inside the Android system

sgibson5150 OP ,

All I’ve gotten so far are sore fingers. 😆

DaTingGoBrrr ,

Damn… 😅 Then I am out of ideas unfortunately

ICastFist , to asklemmy in Be honest: have you ever lost your temper with a customer service rep? And did it ever help?
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

Can you file a complaint straight to a regulatory agency? In Brazil, thankfully, whenever ISPs or telcos give you too trouble, you can simply complain straight to ANATEL (Brazil’s telecom regulator agency), saying what you’re trying to do and which, if any, protocol ID (you get one whenever you get on line with their customer blockage service) you’ve had. Companies will reply and fix the problem the next day.

FollyDolly ,
@FollyDolly@lemmy.world avatar

This is what I did, except I’m in the USA. I had to contact the FCC directly because my phone and internet provider just pretty much quit working. Turns out they were doing repairs in our area and just didn’t tell anyone to expect interruptions. If your ISP won’t take you seriously now, they will if you file an informal complaint with the FCC or other comparable agency.

ICastFist , to asklemmy in Why is music so loud in restaurants? (Serious)
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

I personally avoid such places. There are many who make live music a selling point, which always plays super loud to the point where any chat can only happen by shouting into someone else’s ear. How people like this is beyond me

laughterlaughter ,

Pro-tip: Even in a loud place you can (and should!) speak with your normal voice (e.g. no shouting) when having your mouth an inch or two from the other person’s ear. They will hear you just fine, even if you can’t hear yourself.

NutWrench , to asklemmy in Be honest: have you ever lost your temper with a customer service rep? And did it ever help?
@NutWrench@lemmy.ml avatar

One thing I hate is when I finally reach a human being and it’s clear that the rep is being forced to read a script. And that means they probably have little to no ability to solve my problem.

Management is wasting both our time with their CYA, boilerplate BS

iamtrashman1312 , to nostupidquestions in How are you?

I have today off, and no obligations to anyone or anything. The world is my oyster, friend. So y’know, pretty good. It’s still early morning my time zone (stupid internal clock set for AM shifts) so I’m just snuggling with the cat and putzing around on my phone before I get up.

My only complaint today is that my coffee grinder finally died last week so I’ll have to resort to the pre-ground for my coffee when I do get up in a bit. I’m not a coffee snob by any means but you can totally taste the difference, so I might get a little crazy today and add some oat milk or perhaps even sugar. I know, I’m a wild man.
