Glide , to pcgaming in What is the best value, out of the box PC gaming solution?

If you’re looking for “maybe slightly higher specs than the Steam Deck”, a good APU solution will get you there on the cheap. In particular, the 5000 series APUs are pushing 50% off in most places, because they’re the last entry in a socket type which has already been replaced.

The challenge will be finding a pre-built that takes advantage of these facts, so you may do best either using a website that lets you define the parts you want and then builds the PC for you, or walking into a local PC shop and asking them the same question followed with “I’ve heard that Ryzen APUs are surprisingly good for gaming and affordable right now”.

Hideakikarate , to games in Why Do People Still Play Destiny 2?

TL:DR-I like the story and gunplay most of all. The social aspects of the game also keep me coming back to help friends and strangers.

Background: I started with vanilla D1, then picked it back up after Taken King and have been playing ever since.

For me, the game has become more about story than actual gameplay, which I still feel is one of the best around. I’m super excited about the 3rd Episode especially, seeing as the Hive still has Xivu to deal, and whatever is going on with Oryx’s body.

I still play every week. Once I’m done with my story stuff for the week, I like to help my group get their raid clears and other tasks completed. If they’re not on, I sometimes boot up LFG and help blueberries as best I can. I genuinely like to play the game, even if it’s helping others.

When story stuff is slow, I actually do like PVP, although, within the past year or so, I’ve noticed that I’ve either gotten worse or the average (remaining) player ha gotten better. No longer can I pick up any random weapon (another boon that Destiny offers, IMO. The ability to take a weapon in PVE/PVP and use it ANYWHERE, with varying degrees of success. But where was I?) and do “OK” with it. Everyone uses “easier” weapons or loadouts, and as much as that irks me (it’s quick play, FFS), that’s their right. Is that contributing to the barren, desolate landscape that is the Crucible? Possibly. I’m not, and never have been, good enough to “carry” in the Crucible, and that goes double for Trials. I tried helping a clan mate recently get the Adept Draw Time mod since it only drops from the Lighthouse. He plays on PC. That session didn’t go well.

I got a bit rambling there at the end, but I guess to answer your question, the story and gunplay of the Destiny series are the reasons I like the game. One made friends playing this game. Already been to one wedding, with another coming later this year. Wouldn’t have happened if I never decided to try the game.

Gerudo , to pcgaming in What is the best value, out of the box PC gaming solution?

Yeah, you have to define affordable. For some, that’s $300, others $3000.

Quick answer is just go to pcpartpicker.com and look at other people’s builds for your budget.

Bang for your buck… Just go midrange AMD cpu, don’t worry about core count. Most games aren’t cpu bottlenecked like they used to be.

Motherboard, just grab a reliable brand, don’t overspend.

16gb ram, speed won’t matter much and it’s not that much more than 8gb.

1tb m.2 ssd drive. You can always get more storage later

Cheap case, good quality power supply probably 600 watt would get 90% use cases.

Don’t forget to budget for windows or use Linux if you go that path, your monitor, mouse/keyboard, speakers or headphones.

After all that, than buy the highest end graphics card left in your budget.

BombOmOm ,
@BombOmOm@lemmy.world avatar

While this is certainly in self-build territory, Logical Increments does a real good job giving balanced builds for various price points. People new to building often don’t know how much to spend on a CPU vs GPU to get the best value out of a given build cost.

DScratch ,

I’m mildly suspicious of how rarely it recommends AMD cpus.

BombOmOm ,
@BombOmOm@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, with the Intel 13th and 14th gen issues, it really shouldn’t be recommending them as much. I think part of the issue is they only have one CPU vendor per tier. If they improved that, it would probably fix the issue. That said, if we are going purely off price/power, I’m not convinced their choices are bad.

For a beginner though, I really don’t like just shoving them at PC Part Picker. It’s too easy to get overwhelmed with choices.

lud ,

At least it recommends almost exclusively AMD GPUs

cyberpunk007 , (edited )

Also don’t go Asus. So much drama with their poor quality and customer service as of late. Gamers nexus and others have videos that go into detail.

And the advice here is perfect, exactly what I do when I build a budget machine for someone.

Randomgal , to fediverse in The two most upvoted comments on any Lemmy instance are on Feddit.dk, but you won't see them on your own instance

Is this a bug? Sounds like a feature of decentralization.

SorteKanin OP ,
@SorteKanin@feddit.dk avatar

Mastodon doesn’t support groups so it’s maybe not a “bug” per se, but it is at least a missing feature.

Consider also that if Lemmy shared upvotes the same way, you would only see the upvotes on posts from your own instance, i.e. upvotes would only appear on the local feed. The all feed would be pointless and in general it would be pointless to try to sort posts across the whole fediverse, as you only receive upvotes for your local posts.

Lemmy simply would not function if it shared votes like that. So in that sense, it’s a bug kind of. And as mentioned above, I think it’s a bad way of doing it, as it encourages centralization.

No might. Only do. It is frequently ranked as the best Star Trek movie even though bits not Star Trek. Patrick Stewart didn’t like the very idea of it and then Jonathan Franks made him watch it. Patrick Stewart had to admit that he was wrong. He loved it.

OsrsNeedsF2P , to nostupidquestions in How come drug dealers seem to have a messed up house or at least a messed up car with a bunch of trash in it?

The problem is they’re either lazy or busy (the one guy I knew was busy), and unlike you or me they can’t trust anyone to clean their apartment/car for them.

There was one girl I knew who was known among the dealers as trustworthy - if she saw 50 grand under your bed she would clean around it but not touch it. She made bank

Lost_My_Mind ,

Well of coarse she made bank. She was great at counterfeit bills, and would replace the legit $50,000 with counterfeit.

But if the dealer got caught with fake money, they would blame the sketchy people they got the money from. Not the trustworthy maid.

Bomb a country into impoverishment and then post smug memes about how starving all their civilians to death is morally superior to what the Taliban is doing.

thesporkeffect ,

You’re making some logical leaps here that I can’t follow. I looked at the original meme and it just seems to be pointing out that both putin and the Taliban are terrorists. How do you get starving civilians being morally superior from that .

alcoholicorn ,

The OP meme is mocking the Taliban for their lack of money. The Taliban don’t have money because the US stole the Afghan government’s funds and imposed sanctions.

The result of this has been the worst famine in the world during the period between shortly after the withdrawal and shortly after Oct 7. OP believes that this is liberating for afghan women because they think the Taliban need money to oppress women or something.

thesporkeffect ,

Ok, I see that I missed the actual content of the post, thank you for your reply

OttoVonNoob OP ,

I’m just going to bargain with you on this one, as you seem sensible. I have nothing but love for the Afgan people, I am directly targeting the Taliban with these memes. But everyone is trying to turn them into a blanket of all of Afganastan. I’m trying to say fuck the Nazis and everyone’s saying well Germans are starving. I am quoting a old show where they joke about the Soviet union who was invading Afganastam at the time ironically.
