Eh, I prefer Irish white cheddars myself. But, on the whole, cheese is probably one of the less-evil things out there doing sponsorships.

Professorozone , to asklemmy in people who deliver or install things to people 's houses. what kind of odd things have you seen?

I delivered pizza one summer in college. I was 19. Didn’t see anything too weird. Three memories have stuck in my mind.

  1. I had to deliver to THAT house. It was at the extreme radius of our delivery area. Picture a scene from a horror movie. I drove out to a rural area, left the road for a dirt road that was essentially their driveway. It was pitch black on a probably two acre, for lack of a better description, junkyard. I get to the house, which is a mobile home. The illuminated window, the only source of light for what seemed like miles. The guy that answered the door was an older angry guy. He wore a black Harley Davidson t- shirt that did not successfully cover his belly. He had some pretty hard core tattoos and a chain holding his wallet to his filthy jeans. Behind him were a couple of dudes that looked just like him, watching TV. One hand was holding the sprung door from slamming shut. The other was restraining the Rottweiler by its choker chain attached to the spiked collar. I’m pretty sure he was doing this to keep the dog from tearing me apart and burying my bones under the rusty truck with the grass growing out of the tires. Over the noise of the TV, the dudes behind him and the barking of the attack dog, he yelled for his “old lady” to get the fucking money to pay for the god damn pizza. I hated going to that house, because they never tipped.
  2. In the '80’s and '90’s there was a place downtown Orlando called Rosie’O Graddys. At its height it occupied a fairly large chunk of the downtown area and had an old time theme. Beautiful model T Fords parked out front for effect. Lots of brass and mahogany inside. The place was expensive. I went there one time with some friends and a drink was $14.00. It was huge and you got to keep the glass but, damn. Could not afford that as a student. Anyway, one day I deliver a pizza to an apartment and it was for one of the waitresses that worked there. I guess she had just gotten off of work because she was still dressed in her costume. It was quite revealing and she wore it well. She turned around to get some money and forever burned the image of those fish net stockings with the line running down the back into my mind. At that moment I was wishing that those porno movies where the pizza guy gets swept up in the story were real. Nope. She did give me a nice tip though. Makes sense since she worked for tips too.
  3. I was delivering a pizza to a house in a nice neighborhood. The rain was coming down in biblical proportions. In fact it wasn’t falling from the sky. It was being driven sideways. So I’m standing at this guy’s front door digging through my change bag trying to find, literally coins, to give him his change. Finally, with my hands full of the empty pizza bag and my change pouch that the wind was trying to rip from my hands, and getting soaked by the horizontal rain, I finally just pulled out a dollar and essentially tipped the customer, just to get back to my car. Sucked.

So nothing too weird, but hey, I figured you were just looking for some stories anyway.

Minor nit pick, but did you know that Lemmy has actual cross posting functionality?

Either way, interesting study. This is the type of content that I Red er… Lemmy for, so thanks for posting. I use Voyager myself, being an Apollo refugee.

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, cross posting is another quirky Lemmy thing. AFAIK it just generates a new post with the same content, and also maybe varies by app. That could be wrong though: I’m not sure.

threelonmusketeers ,

AFAIK it just generates a new post with the same content

Yup, that is exactly what it does. So if the original post is edited, none of the changes propagate to any of the crossposts.

In my opinion, crossposts should embed the original post, not simply copy a snapshot of the content at the time the crosspost is made. That’s a Lemmy issue though, not an app issue.

WanderingVentra ,

Ya I’ve only been able to cross post on the web UI. I’ve seen apps like Jerboa and Voyager at least show cross posting correctly, I just wish they made it easier to cross-post in app.

threelonmusketeers ,

I’ve yet to find an app which uses the same Lemmy crossposting function that is in the web UI.

Microw ,

Boost has a very easy-to-handle implementation of crossposting

WanderingVentra ,

Oh nice. I don’t think I’ve tried that one yet now that I think of it.

TokenBoomer ,

Healthcare as a right is incredibly radicalizing.

cashmaggot OP ,

Isn't it crazy though? People don't talk about it. They will talk about how you will get service regardless of your class in an emergency room. But they don't talk about the classism and the cultural biases that follow suit. I have seen homeless people hacked the fuck up, like actual hack jobs, because they needed things done and the medical system did the bare minimum to assist. People with their jaws exposed, hands sawed off with a criss-cross suture, people walking around like they were extras in a Silent Hill film (that one was on Baltimore). I don't even know how we can be so fucked up as a people. Like...someone give that woman something other than her jaw just having to be exposed to the elements, right? And if it's an addiction thing - give her the drugs she needs to fucking weather the storm because it's not like she's going to be any less of an addict because she needs surgery and it's not like this is the thing that's going to turn it all around.

The thing I always do ponder though, because legitimately it's fucked how so many people have to live their lives. (I've known three people I can think of off the top of my head who have died because of things that could have been avoided - but really more than that - but I am talking like...cancer and what not). But either way I do know that addiction is a social disease. And in that sense I don't think it's healthy for people in active addiction to be around joe-schmoe. In the sense that everyone is fighting some kind of battle and you could become the next victim before you know it. But I also don't think people should be having to live like wild dogs. And fentanyl has such a shitty fix from what I hear, that you're pretty much sick (withdrawing) all the time. I also heard that China has whole clean corporations setup for the distribution of x-drugs. I mean look, it's not going to cover the meth addicts. I don't really know what could help them. But I swear to god, if we got steady fixes to more opiate addicts this world (or at least this country?) would be a more stable place. I just don't know what that looks like big picture. I would say maintenance like methadone. Maybe it's not a one-size fits all thing (cause it more than likely isn't). I can't say it's just getting them a house, because I used to work at a place like that and every mother fucker was using and it was a pit of chaos. Idk...I wish I knew. I wish I could snap my fingers and make everything better.

But on a whole, I wish the world (let alone America) did health (mental x physical) much better.

If I were to try to decode this, he was probably released from Pierce County, WA lockup at 8AM on 6/24, immediately placed under arrest by them at that time on another warrant, and then picked up by Kootenai County, ID sheriffs who placed him under arrest at 3:22PM, and then drove him back to Kootenai County Jail.

His bail is well over $250k, lol

There are a lot of image/gif(?) posts that I haven’t been able to view either on the Memmy (Apple) app or in-browser with either Safari (Apple) or Google Chrome. I imagine it comes down to the file types as well as the lack of native hosting to standardize posts of different media types, but I’m not the techiest person to consult on that. One downside of the fediverse is the lack of standards for file hosting/conversion/displaying to ensure that all media can be accessed regardless of the browser/app (or, alternatively, the lack of an all-encompassing app for all devices [Jerboa sounds like the closest to this to me but it is not available for iOS yet]), as well as the self-funded nature of the instances commonly not having the budget to natively host multimedia content such as videos.

froh42 , to coffee in What less common coffee drinks do you make?
Wirlocke , to asklemmy in To those who know about writing and such: Does a Mary Sue/Gary Stu NEVER fail? or their failings are to minimal to take account on them?

I think the worst thing about a Mary Sue is when their success comes trivially or randomly.

What usually helps me is making the obstacle more specific and diving into those specifics when they’re problem solving. You’ll find most things we broadly group into large lumps, like martial arts, swordfighting, researching, medicine, ect. often have an overwhelming amount of details that not only separates good from bad, but also have specific dynamics that change depending on circumstances.

If you want to make the successes feel earned, include enough detail about the problem that you can tell a story with the challenges involved. If your focus is swordfighting convey the kinds of techniques your protagonist know then put them up against opponents that can counter those techniques so they have to learn. If you focus is a doctor then instead of seeking out the Medicine Flower™, try conveying the roadmap to making medicine to the audience then make a story out of the process.

I feel like Breaking Bad is a good example of this. It depends a lot on actual chemistry and every chemistry advancement is a plot point. Mainly it’s figuring out how to procure the ingredients and equipment without leaving evidence to get caught from.
