Mountaineer , to selfhosted in One Small step, a giant leap for Fediverse but...

I moved from aussie.zone to lemmy.world already to get around federation issues.
Now beehaw.org has stopped federating with lemmy.world šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

I donā€™t want to have half a dozen accounts so that I can access all the niches of this system, and yet itā€™s beggining to look like the dream of federation is stillborn.

MerylasFalguard ,
@MerylasFalguard@lemmy.world avatar

Yea. I feel like Beehaw cutting a lot of the larger general communities out from two of the biggest instances is highlighting early a major hurdle thatā€™s gonna make the whole fediverse thing difficult to get a lot of people on board with. I donā€™t want to have to keep making new accounts to access stuff, but likeā€¦ half of the communities I had subscribed to are just gone now because the admins over there decided they donā€™t want to play with anyone else, I guess.

salmacis ,
@salmacis@kbin.social avatar

To be fair, that's how things used to be on the internet. You'd sign up for various forums or message boards with different accounts. Then it all became consolidated under one roof, and message boards started dying. What's happening with reddit now shows the danger of that.

homelabber ,

If Iā€™m not mistaken both Beehaw and Lemmy.world are pretty big mainstream instances.

Why has Beehaw decided to stop federating with lemmy.world?

dan ,
@dan@upvote.au avatar

What federation issues were you having with aussie.zone? I used that one for a while before creating my own instance.

Mountaineer ,
@Mountaineer@lemmy.world avatar

The issue was the owners choice of not federating with anything nsfw.

By moving to lemmy.world I could still post as much as I wanted to !australia AND upvote boobs.

@sdg Maybe edit the post with the solution, it will be useful to others.

Thatā€™s absolutely wild. I bet if he owned a garage, heā€™d expect you to be able to fix a car in the dark.

Question tho, as someone not in IT, how do you handle HIPPA policies. Clearly you have to have access, but I assume the info would just be backed up seperately from other data.

Steeve ,

I worked as a Data Engineer in health insurance for almost a decade. Iā€™m Canadian, but we have similar laws and the answer is basically that every employee signs a lot of NDAs. Data access should be limited to what you need to do your role, and any data that leaves the company has to be totally stripped of personal identifying information (usually some form of data masking).

That being said, I never found it difficult to get access to data, it was usually just another NDA to sign. I did work with government policies for a bit where I had to go to a government facility and get finger printed and all that before they gave me access, that was interesting. I work in tech now and the controls around data access are a lot more serious, gotta jump through a lot of hoops to get access to anything. Probably because of the scrutiny tech is under these days.

jeena , to selfhosted in [SOLVED] Why is my Lemmy instance not finding other instances' communities?
@jeena@jemmy.jeena.net avatar

What I do is:

  • I take the name "!selfhosted"
  • copy and paste it into the search in my instance
  • press "search"
  • it shows "No results."
  • I go to Communities on my instance
  • I click on "All"
  • At the bottom of the list I can see ā€œ!selfhostedā€ and the Subscribe button

I guess it is some kind of a bug. If I post a url of a post, it also takes qute some time, several seconds, until it shows up.

cereal7802 ,
@cereal7802@lemmy.game-files.net avatar

My process is similar, but i donā€™t use the !ommunity format. I just copy the url and search for it.

Search: ā€œlemmy.world/c/selfhostedā€

it will initially return Nothing found but after another second, it shows up and i can click it and then subscribe to get new posts and comments.

I have watched this show so many times. I could just close my eyes with the audio in the background narrating the scenes as I replay them in my mind. It would put me right to sleep haha. Almost like someone reading me my favorite bedtime story as a kid. I think the subreddit had 20k+ members before Reddit died. So we are definitely not alone.

The "Federation of servers" is a great way to handle this. I am surprised how will it works even in it infancy.

Long live the Federation.
