solrize , to nostupidquestions in As apps make their way to Lemmy, how do we handle server costs?

I was chatting with someone about this earlier today. It would be great if there was a fan-out system something like icecast crossed with bittorrent, so people could contribute VPS or home internet to propagate Lemmy traffic. That would require some crypto signatures in the protocol to make sure the messages weren’t tampered with, of course.

hiyaaaaa23 , to nostupidquestions in Was the lemmyverse/threadiverse aware that Mastodon has been convulsed for the past 2 days?

I haven’t really heard that much about this. But I am very skeptical of any claims that Facebook is actually going to fedderate in good faith.

Obviously, it’ll be up to the administrators of the different instances whether to federate or not. So we’ll see

I also wonder how big the overlap is between people who would use a federated platform and those who would willingly use anything made by Facebook.

With that said, I’ll never say never, but I find the likelihood of this taking off to be slim to none

drphungky ,

It doesn’t have to overlap if they bake it into their existing website. A huge portion of humanity has a Facebook account, even if they don’t use it. They’re baking in as much as they can with Marketplace taking over Craigslist’s former space, trying to capture VR with your Facebook account, and now they want to take over Twitter’s space. And I’m not saying the backend work wouldn’t be huge, but their whole “posting stuff to people who follow you” schtick fits perfectly with the Fediverse. There’s nothing stopping them from just federating everything.

hiyaaaaa23 ,

Fair, however I’m still VERY skeptical of them federating in good faith

drphungky ,

A reasonable stance, but as has been covered elsewhere in the thread, Facebook has a pretty good track record with open source software so far. They don’t really EEE like Microsoft, they buy other private sector companies to quash torture competitors. Kind of a different evil

nix , to moviesandtv in Who are your favourite directors?

First two directors I used to be into but no longer:

I loved Tarantino’s work but I feel that I’ve “outgrown” it. I’m just not that interested in ultraviolence anymore.

Similarly, big fan of Wes Anderson, especially Moonrise Kingdom, but the incredible whiteness (both in cast and settings) of the majority of his movies has me longing for something more diverse (again, in both literal casting and in thematic backgrounds).

And now, who I’m still excited for:

DANIELS - I really enjoyed Swiss Army Man, tho it was flawed. I was hyped for Everything Everywhere and it delivered and then some. Can’t wait to see what they do next if that was just their second one.

Makoto Shinkai - All of his work is so achingly beautiful. Love it.

Jordan Peele - Loved Get Out of course. Us was interesting but didn’t stick as much. Even NOPE was flawed but still very unique and intriguing. I want to see what else he has.

Ari Aster - Hereditary was good, and Midsommar was amazing. I heard very little at all about Beau is Afraid (which is almost worse than hearing bad things), and I haven’t seen it yet. Still intrigued to see what’s next.

wist , to nostupidquestions in What do you think of the trend of Mocktail bars?

Seems like the problem besides being a possible fad is just how many mocktails will people drink at a single visit when the aim isn’t to get drunk. This will certainly impact sales & tipping for the servers.

This community is probably more true to the original intent of r/piracy than r/piracy. Same head mod, more freedom to do whatever, etc.

SterlingVapor , to explainlikeimfive in ELI5: Why haven’t we fully explored the pyramids yet?

So I just learned this recently, but apparently after the whole Victorian “smash and grab” thing where Britain stole all the art that was or wasn’t nailed down (there’s a lot of feet and footless statues lol), archeologists went to sites and realized how much knowledge was destroyed by their predecessors who only cared about impressive finds they could show off

Technology and techniques are always improving, so now when they find an archeological site, they excavate only a fraction, leaving the rest for future generations who will have better tools.

Obviously, non-destructive methods are still on the table, but I found that pretty interesting

@DaveFuckinMorgan@lemmy.world avatar

My Dad has cirrhosis and he can’t drink anymore so he mostly drinks tea now but sometimes when he go to a social event he’ll have a mocktail. I can see the utility of them. Great for pregnant women and people with health issues.

pelikan , to piracy in Pirate streaming services
@pelikan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Piracy movie streaming websites rely on CDN servers to exist. This are servers where films are hosted and from where films are streamed. This is very big infrastructure investment (by far bigger than is required to run popular torrent tracker) which is not possible for random pirate enthusiast with web develolment skills. This means that most of those sites are run by pirate enterprises (it’s known fact that most of those CDNs are sponsored by illegal gambling operators that’s why many of pirate streaming cinema is spammed with casino advertising). So most of similiar looking streaming sites are whitelabels: this means they have same owners, common CDN, same backend and only differ with domains, frontend skins and also they could have a bit different films in database. Such sites are created to get most of free traffic from search engines (so if positions of one site would drop, other site from same owners could raise and compensate this drop).

DrowR ,

That's interesting to know. Thanks.

open_door OP ,

Ah, thank you! That makes a lot of sense. I’m broadly familiar with CDNs, so I figured they must all be using the same database, but I never made the step from that to “the sites themselves might have the same owners”.

oranwolf , to warframe in If you had to pick a character to remove from the game forever, which character would it be?
@oranwolf@beehaw.org avatar

I respect your opinion, however as someone who likes Valk, and often mains her, I wouldn’t want her removed.

I think most Warframes have a place in the game honestly. Maybe my pick would be Excalibur since we have Styanax now but I’m sure there’s some Excalibur lovers around. Also, on the topic of Excalibur, would that mean I ALSO would remove Excalibur Umbra and Excalibur Prime, or just excal prime? Because If not then we also have umbra as a backup.

sandriver ,

It makes me angry for Valkyr that they nerfed Hysteria, then turned around later and buffed Revenant’s Mesmer Skin; and her claws can’t slash while Garuda gets better Valkitty Klaws due to being the only exalted melee in the game that gets acolyte mods.

Excal still has a place in being the funny number melee frame. Nobody else gets to stack as many melee buffs as swordy boi.

Muun , to nostupidquestions in What do you think of the trend of Mocktail bars?

Covid isolation created a bunch of alcoholics and subsequently a bunch of recovering addicts. This gave rise to a desire for alcohol-free replacements.

My wife is 1 year sober, herself. She often struggles at restaurants because she wants something “refreshing” to drink. Most of the time, this leaves her with lemonade or soda. Neither of which is very exciting.

The demand is there and these bars are popping up to meet that demand. Long term, I think these business fail. We’ll see more and more mocktails sold at grocery stores and people will be able to find something they want without having to go to a bar and pay more for the same thing they can find at a grocery store. The ones that succeed will be in small pockets where the number of people who are sober AND want a place to congregate and meet people is very high.

Lifecoach5000 OP ,

Yeah I’m kinda with your line of thinking, hence why I posed the question. I am gonna still try and support the local mocktail place that’s opening just because I think it’s a great idea. I’m just skeptical on the long term viability of such an establishment
