I haven’t heard anyone say that they’re upset because Reddit needed money. Actually I’ve heard more understanding people, they wanted Reddit to stay alive and were willing to possibly say yes to subscriptions/ad based content.
But spez completely shit the bed on the entire thing. Giving them the crazy high prices, the incredibly short deadline, hiding the pricing for those 2 months, then trying to blame it on AI, and just everything. Yes, if they had a level headed leader at the front of their corporation I could very well see myself preparing to pay a couple bucks a month to Reddit to get a good experience, they could get their “Residual Income”.
Instead he had to go all megalomaniac and demand everyone bend to his will - and I left permanently.
I used to pay for a reddit gold to support the site because Ai (naively) beloved it was a worthwhile investment in a website that connected disparate, niche communities and served as a repository of knowledge.
Yep. The headline could have been “Reddit to start charging for Premium if users want to use third party apps” and it would’ve been and gone in a day or two.
Instead, Huffman’s ego stepped in and he gave media cycle red meat with how he’s handled this. The story now is how aggressive, dishonest, and incompetent he looks. I think there’s a lot yet left to be written about a tech company that relies entirely on the health of its community treating members of that community so poorly and so openly attributing that to $$$.
I’ve never used SolarWinds patch manager, but after all of those breaches I’m very leery on any of their stuff. Another option to look into is manage engine patch manager plus. It can be a bit of a pain but it worked decently enough. Also, very cheap. Just don’t expect a super robust and deliable program
“what is the age cut off for socially acceptable fun having” is what I read. Do what you enjoy and anyone saying you shouldn’t do X, or you are too old to do Y aren’t the type of people I associate with. Just turned 30 and I never plan to stop.
bruh that k6qw lemmy instance 45.9k users right now but ZERO posts. wtf.
these bots are gonna be a problem
And my conspiratorial side makes me think that they're not here by accident
I am so angry. I am so sick and tired of just stating my experiences as a woman and having people who are not women straight up tell me that I’m wrong. About my own life experiences. It’s fucking exhausting to be surrounded on all sides by bad faith actors, knowing full well that you won’t get through to them, and feeling defeated, like the world is going backwards and you can feel your rights being torn away from you bit by bit, trying desperately to stand up for yourself and having any words you say fall on deaf ears. I’m so sick of not being listened to. I’m so sick of not being believed. I am so fucking sick of not being respected. I just want to be treated like a human and not be criticised for literally just fucking existing.
I’ve deleted my comments and posts and find Reddit then restored them a few hours later.
So I’ve written some Python to delete them automatically and have it run on a schedule. Fuck 'em. A week later and Reddit are still restoring my data for the script to delete.
Fair. It’s just I heard it a few times already, but I don’t see anything wrong with it personally. So I was curious whether it’s sth concrete or just that sth feels off in general.
Personally I’d prefer to see politics videos allowed. Back in the early days of reddit, r/videos was full of politics videos with lots of engagement. Finally they sent all that to the r/politicalvideo ghetto to die. I always thought that was too bad.
The end result of this was that all videos that had even a slight connection to politics were removed, and the politicalvideo subreddit never took off.
This makes sense… Allowing political videos invites people with agendas to abuse the ranking system to push that agenda. It could overshadow the promise of a community for cool videos on the internet.
Videos is such a broad category so I definitely understand the sentiment that political videos should be allowed as long as they’re not peddling blatantly false agendas. Personally however, I find politics to be increasingly draining on the psyche and sometimes I just want a community where I can turn my brain off and enjoy some silly and quick laughs or some interesting factoids or mini docs, etc.
I guess it all depends on whether the community here wants c/videos to be lighthearted or a broader category.
I’d prefer we didn’t allow political videos. I would like a place to be able to just enjoy a funny or interesting video without having to sit through some far-right or far-left propaganda piece. That doesn’t mean there’s no place for those but can we keep some areas free of the persistent alternating echo chambers?
since it’s all federated it’s most likely donations and out of pocket. the real risk here is that as communities become more and more centralized, the cost to operate increases significantly (the lemmy.world guy had to upgrade servers at least twice during the boom). there’s a chance that these instances won’t stay around long term, i’m not sure how the lemmy code base deals with instances dropping off. does everyone lose access to all of those servers? since your account is associated with that instance do you not also lose your account and posts?
