FKLinguista , to lemmyshitpost in So tomorrow, right?

Thanks for the reminder. Just deleted my Reddit account now. :D

neblem , to youshouldknow in YSK: how to painlessly migrate you and us from reddit

For read only reddit use teddit (old.reddit style) or libreddit (new reddit style). They proxy instead of use the API so both still work but you can’t log in. sub.rehab has a good listing of reddit to lemmy equivalents.

rayquetzalcoatl , to ukcasual in Is it just me, or has Royal Mail gone downhill badly?
@rayquetzalcoatl@lemmy.world avatar

I definitely used to feel somewhat comforted when I knew a package I’d ordered online was being delivered by RM, cos I could usually trust that it would be on time and in one piece. The last, I don’t know, five or six things I’ve ordered that have been delivered by RM have been delivered literally up to a week later than the timeline. Gimme DPD or DHL anyday.

Hey, could you please edit your post to have the question in the title. See rule #1 for more information (:

SmallAlmond , to showerthoughts in Lemmy communities need a distinct one word name for communities like how reddit has "subreddits"

The problem lies in the federative aspect of it.

Calling the communities “sublemmies” for example, would mean that people on kbin have to call it like that too. And afaik they are called in a general way for the fediverse, just like how mastodon changed toot to post.

Does this make the platforms less unique? Yes, absolutely, but I don’t think there is a fix for it.

HamSwagwich , to android in Jerboa currently unusable for other people?
@HamSwagwich@kbin.social avatar

Crashing for me. Switched to Connect. Works well... except you can't pinch zoom images, which is a huge problem...

sabriy01 , to showerthoughts in Lemmy is so good right now for no particular reason

Federation is the best thing i have ever seen.

FleaCatcher , to youshouldknow in YSK: how to painlessly migrate you and us from reddit

Consider instituting a “read only reddit” policy

One should also log-out of Reddit if possible.

Janin , to startrek in My wife and I are watching through TNG, on S3 now, and I kinda like Wesley.

I like him, never understood the hate.

@Janin @Takeshidude me too!! I figured it was subconscious jealousy. He was living the life we all wanted.

lwaxana_katana ,

I agree, I really like Wesley. And not only because Wil Wheaton seems like a really lovely person.

Karmic_Backlash , to nostupidquestions in What side job or career can I learn or do in my spare time to earn money?

I’d say that depends a lot on what kind of skills you have available. As for the providing for your family, the most important part is to focus on being there for them, rather then giving them what you never had. I can assure you that your children will care a thousand times more about a good father then having the newest toy or game. As long as they are fed, clothed, bedded, happy, and healthy, anything will seem like the world to them.

For a less sappy answer, seeing as how you’ve already got a successful business, try taking up a more creative hobby and improving with that in time. You’d be surprised how good you can get at a craft in only a few months. I can’t say for certain it will be able to fill the different you might be looking for, but it will likely bring balance to your work life schedule and be a nice thing to fall back on when things with your business are slow.

Dick_Justice , to android in For the people coming in asking what app for Lemmy. You don't need it. Lemmy is great on a mobile browser.
@Dick_Justice@lemmy.world avatar

In Firefox, visit https://wefwef.app , then hit settings and choose install. Poof, it's amazing.

peter , to nostupidquestions in Reddit refugee, what are the Lemmy "jolly rancher" legends?
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Lemmy has only existed since 2019, so it’s up to you to go out there and make your own jolly rancher, swamps of degobah and colby 2012 stories… well maybe not that last one

IoSapsai , to android in What's your lemmy app of choice?

New user here. I use the Web app for now. Connect seems to make my phone freeze for whatever reason and I can’t seem to login with jerboa because “my server version is too low”…

taldennz , to explainlikeimfive in Why are big platforms shutting down third-party Apps? Should an average user be worried?

Essentially it boils down to - ways in which they can turn users into money.

  • Control the content you see - Especially ads which provide income. Also injecting posts into your stream regardless of preferences to direct views towards sponsors preferences or to try to extend engagement.
  • More visibility over user activity - It gives them better tools to manipulate users habits (that pesky engagement), and better (for them), user telemetry can be sold (people who like X like Y is useful knowledge but it can go far deeper than this).
  • They want to discourage content that discourages advertisers - mostly this is NSFW content (since the advertisers don’t want their ads showing beside NSFW content) but I expect it’ll begin to span more than that over time.

With the elimination of third party apps, you can bet that ‘old Reddit’ is on the chopping-block soon too (mostly to boost ad views)
