I have an Arr setup with Plex and it’s great. Basically I add a TV series or movie to Sonarr/Radarr, they will then use Prowlarr to find torrent, then it will get sent to my torrent client, and then Plex will eventually show the content. It’s one of my favorite things that I have setup.
I started pirating 30 years ago, sharing floppies. Since then I’ve gone through every method imaginable, from IRC to eMule, from Mega to Usenet, and the Arr setup is the very first time I can delegate downloads to another family member sitting on the couch: that’s how smooth it is.
The only difference to your setup is that I use Jackett instead of Prowlarr, configure NZBGeek directly on Sonarr/Radarr, and use Kodi instead of Plex.
Ah, and nzb360 (or LunaSea) on people’s phones. That’s what makes it so any normie can use it. So long, streaming service salad!
The thing with VPN’s is that you’re only shifting the trust from your ISP to your VPN provider. That provider can still see pretty much everything you’re doing and your real IP, if they wanted to. To add to this, plenty of VPN companies have been found logging when they said they didn’t. I would say either set up traffic for I2P, or simply go with an actually no logs VPN company like Mullvad, who’s been battle tested and doesn’t log, and you’ll be fine.
People also say that because it’s important to understand what a VPN is and does as well. It wasn’t originally meant to be any sort of anonymity tool, the technology exists to make it seem as if your traffic is coming from somewhere else - which allows for things like remote work on a local network.
Any ideas on how to do this? I've tried using i2p--in Firefox--and can't seem to make it work. Sites that are supposedly up won't load. I've followed all the tutorials that I've found, and it doesn't seem to be doing what's expected. And no, I can't give any details at this second, because I'm away from my home computer, and it's been a few months since I tried.
It’s not just about malware, but more about system stability and avoiding breaking your system by bad updates. Updates are atomic (all or nothing) Ideally if something goes wrong, the update isn’t applied at all. If you manage to boot to a bad config, you can fix it by rebooting in to the previous known good config.
This is immensely valuable for appliance-type devices that aren’t meant to be “administered” by end users, like the Steam-deck, set top boxes, even Android phones. For laptops / desktops I’m sure it has some value for people who want a stable base, with newer flatpak/AppImages for day to day use.
As for how updates and system packages are installed, I can’t answer the specific technologies used, but I believe the principle is that an entirely new/complete filesystem “image” is created / layered on top. Then you reboot to the new image.
Ahhh 90’s TV… So there was a lot of issues during the 90’s when it came to scripts. One of the issues was that TV Execs now acknowledged the existence of women but they weren’t to sure what to “do” with them. You can see this in many many shows but one of the things that pops up is you might have a strong female character that has a few really good episodes or seasons but at some point the writing flips to they want to get pregnant and married (not saying either is bad but when it comes out of left field a bit it’s clearly just tacked on plot).
The reason I bring the above up is that much of Trek (even TNG) women are treated in many plots as merely props in a narrative to move a story forward not as actual characters. Unfortunately this is also why the Federation seems so blasé to how they’re treated, because they’re not fully treated as a proper character. So, hilariously, the execs of the time (and writers) are somewhat caricatures of their own creations, the Ferengis.
Therein my frustrations with older Trek. I see and appreciate what they were trying to do, but their inherent biases were on full display despite creating a show about a better progressive future.
The insane thing is that even with all that they were exceptionally progressive… in comparison to what else was out at the same time. The issue of doing this sort of social comparison is that you really need to keep it in context with history. Weird example. The Honeymooners regularly had a punchline of threatening violence against one of the wives (The infamous “One of these days Alice! BANG! ZOOM!”), 10 years after the last episode Star Trek The Original Series started which (unless I’m remembering wrong) didn’t use violence as a joke.
Sometimes it takes a while for things to change… Other times it gallops along.

Fossil and Mobvid’s TicWatches are normally my go to alternatives, but personally, I haven’t been impressed with their latest offerings. Google and Samsung really do have the best WearOS devices, if that’s what you’re looking for.
That said, I realized recently I wasn’t using most of the features in WearOS. I had a dozen apps and barely used any of them. All I really used it for was notifications, music controls, and as a basic step counter.
Picked up a PineTime and I’m pretty happy with it. It’s basic, but it’s cheap, repairable, and I can flash alternate firmware/oses on it easily with gadgetbridge.
An immutable distro, to my understanding, locks core components of Linux (mainly /sys afaik) from interaction from not only bad actors but also the user so that you can’t fuck up you’re system in a way like Linus from LTT (removing X11 by forcefully ignoring all warnings). Applications can be installed as Flatpak, AppImage, Snap or through OverlayFS from regular repositories.
Advantages to (non- tech savvy) users are an additional layer against their own mistakes and easier support since the important stuff is identical on every install of the given distro.
This is, IMO, the biggest yet least obvious advantage of immutable systems. A traditional Linux environment is "just as safe" as the immutable setups, if only the user/administrator is perfect, never makes a mistake, and always makes the right decisions for now and the future.
Given reality tends to differ from the above, having a system that, at a bare minimum, provides you the "oh shit go back" button to system-level changes, and at best provides a clear, reproducible, trail of actions, is a huge advantage for long-term stability for all users, experienced or not. I've been through the school of hard knocks far too many times maintaining everything from server setups to gaming desktops the traditional way, and have committed to "early adopting" immutable distros for pretty much everything except the gaming setup (given the whole suite of proprietary and out-of-date/out-of-touch applications that are basically necessary in that space and not-fully-compatible with the sandboxes and abstraction layers necessary).

so normally if you wanna install something - let's say minecraft. you would also need to install java. the flatpak for minecraft would have java inside of it so it can be run in its own little container and you don't need to install either
Effective, sure. But, if a company is truly engaging, listening, adapting to the employees needs and feedback, unions would be a lot less needed or effective. When companies are exploiting workers, lowering wages and benefits, causing more problems and not listening to employees, unions can really make a huge difference. If the people are looking to unionize, the company is failing and the workers aren’t being listened to and they want change to happen.
Unions can do a lot of good. I’m very pro-union. But, people don’t go looking to unionize if things are going great and the company is really listening and adapting to employee concerns.

I went HAM on my most recent one. They’re anonymous but I’m sure my direct manager can tell my writing style. But the place I work for has been in refusing to do any hiring including backfills so now I’m a team of 1 doing what 7 people used to do and I let them know I’m not pleased.
The guy is already giving honest feedback on “anonymous” surveys… He’s probably on that list. At least he could try to improve his situation, and look for a new job at the same time since it’s clear they don’t respect his efforts.
Just FYI, they’re not really anonymous. These surveys get reported back to each individual manager with the responses, ratings given, and counts of staff completed; so it is very easy for managers to discern who wrote what.
I figure they aren’t. I didn’t curse or name anyone by name, I just made it pretty clear that the understaffing is job performance at a pretty severe level and that the workload has everyone miserable
Was pretty skeptical about all this stuff, but it seems like y’all have succeeded in moving a good chunk of people from Reddit to this new place, which hopefully bodes well for the future.
Hopefully y’all will be able to keep moderation functioning well, especially considering that a lot of Folks’ll stay split between here and the Reddit subs. Like the biggest reason (IMO, of course) that r/DaystromInstitute is/was one of the best subs out there was just how effective the moderators are/were.
