I always thought the genetic modification ban was pretty flimsy. It wasn’t even established until DS9 since TNG had the Darwin Research Station.

I really don’t like how strict they made it in SNW. Why should humans dictate the laws for all races in the Federation? What happened to the Denobulans? Phlox said that they genetically modify themselves.

DS9 said that genetic modification was still allowed for the treatment of serious illnesses. So it doesn’t make sense for all permanent genetic modification to be banned.

Also, in DS9, genetic modification was more like performance enhancing drugs. Bashir’s modifications gave him an unfair advantage over other people. It’s kind of like someone cheating to get into a good school. But that argument also has problems since there are aliens with naturally superior abilities compared to humans. Vulcans have perfect memory, superior physical abilities, and telepathy, they would have a big advantage over humans in a lot of things. But Vulcans aren’t banned from Starfleet.

The franchise is fairly consistent about genetic enhancements (i.e., augmentation) are illegal, while medical procedures are not. The Darwin station is the biggest outlier.

kingofmadcows ,

TNG overall never said anything about the Federation or Starfleet being against genetic modification. It wasn’t just Darwin Research Station. They didn’t say anything about it in “Masterpiece Society” either.

Dr. Bashir I Presume was the first episode that any kind of ban was ever brought up. They didn’t even say anything about a ban in “Space Seed” or “Wrath of Khan.”

Also, when Torres was pregnant in Voyager, she wanted the Doctor to modify her baby to remove Klingon traits and no one said it was illegal.

One could argue that’s not an augmentation.

I really like the look fo the dress uniforms. Surprised that they never got Pike to the stand, especially after Una confessing that she told Pike 4 months ago.

Now that the cast has been reset, I’m ready for them to explore some strange new worlds.

daniskarma , to fediverse in Can we organize AMAs to help Lemmy/Kbin grow?

As a mid term objective I see it. There’s still a lot to do before we could have a big AMA.

average650 ,
@average650@lemmy.world avatar

Why? No reason we couldn’t keep doing amas. What would prevent it from being productive right now?

Necronomicommunist ,

Layout is still being tweaked and you want the UI to be as easy to manage as possible for people doing the AMA (new reddit is likely a factor in more recent AMAs not being as good)

It’s a bit of a chicken and egg situation regarding amount of people. More people will bring in more AMAs because it is largely a publicity thing. A low userbase means people may not want to do an AMA, or choose to do an AMA on a larger platform. But having AMAs brings people in. It’s hard to get the ball rolling.

Maybe we can ask Spez to do an AMA on Lemmy?

buckykat , to technology in Is Windows 11 worth installing over 10?

No, install linux

webghost0101 ,

I upgraded 10 to 11 and really liked it. Problem with linux is all the commandline if you want to do advanced stuff.

Then i got a gpt-4 subscription and installed arch linux with hyperland. I aint looking back, everytime i use a windows system now it feels slow and prehistoric… sometimes though you get some weird problem you just don’t wanna deal with at the time and then its briefly booting into windows again.

MentalEdge ,
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

For the problem thing, I use timeshift.

Hit a snag? Boot into a system state from a few weeks back and deal with it later.

webghost0101 ,

The problem was the specialized software from samsung to sideload jellyfin on my tv not working properly but i second that timeshift is not a luxery on these kind of systems. If i only need windows now and then for sm specialized then thats ok, hope to move windows into just a vm soon.

MentalEdge ,
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

I have to admit, I still have a windows partition, but I honestly haven’t booted into it for a full year now. The only thing I can think of needing it for, is firmware updates to my logitech peripherals, but that’s something I can live without.

There will always be something that will only work on windows, but that list is getting short enough now that the number of people it’s a problem for has begun to shrink, too.

MrGeekman , to fediverse in Can we organize AMAs to help Lemmy/Kbin grow?

I think it would be best to hold off until the Lemmy developers push out an update which solves the issue of having separate communities for the same topic on multiple instances. For example, multi-community feeds or merging instances.

AbsolutePain ,

Is this now widely acknowledged as a problem? I don’t see a problem with that kind of fragmentation tbh. Especially since there was fragmentation of that kind in reddit too Maybe Lemmy/kbin just need a reliable way to search across instances.

EvaUnit02 , to gaming in Your favorite board games?

My favorites in no particular order:

Dune (either the original AH edition or the 2019 GF9 edition)
Battletech
Descent (first edition)
Mage Wars Arena
Battlestar Galactica
Food Chain Magnate
Scythe
Blood Bowl
Twilight Imperium (fourth edition)
War of the Ring (second edition)
Millenium Blades
Exceed
BattleCON
Cosmic Encounter
Sidereal Confluence
Sekigahara
Triumph & Tragedy
Iron Ships & Wooden Men
Cloudspire
Forbidden Stars
Go

BentiGorlich ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

Twilight Imperium, really? I only played it once and it was the longest, most boring experience. Each turn just takes an enormous time, almost as long as a Warhammer 40k turn and I played with 5 other players. When you were done with your turn you could go for a really long walk and when you came back you wondered how the hell they just finished 2 turns...

I really really enjoy boardgames, but not ones that take a weekend to play...

(this isn't meant to insult you, I am just seriously wondering if my experience with it is a lot different than yours or if you like boardgames that you play an entire weekend)

EvaUnit02 ,
@EvaUnit02@kbin.social avatar

My group can get a game of 4th edition finished in four to five hours. We are seasoned players, though. Twilight Imperium is both a strategically and tactically rich 4X game, which is why it's one of my favorites.

That said, I am not opposed to long games. I recently played Fire in the Sky, which took me and my opponent 4 four-hour sessions to complete.

I look at it as no different than a campaign game such as Gloomhaven. Gloomhaven took my group two years to finish.

BentiGorlich ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

Well with gloomhaven its multiple clearly seperated missions though.
My limit is at about 4-5h with a game that I've never played before. If I played the game before the limit is at about 3h I'd say 🤔

fubo , to asklemmy in What's the best way to get rid of house centipede?

House centipedes are predators. They’re only there because there’s food for them to eat — prey animals that they are hunting.

Now, what are their prey animals? Here’s some critters that house centipedes eat:

  • Cockroaches
  • Termites
  • Bedbugs
  • Silverfish
  • Ants

You have house centipedes because you have these.

The centipedes are eating them.

Now, what was it you wanted to get rid of?

Ciari ,
@Ciari@sh.itjust.works avatar

Oh god not silverfish, I had a few in my bathroom a while back and I spent like three weeks spraying all the nooks and crannies with lavender-scented spray every day to make sure no more of them came back. I like bugs but those are some creepy little fuckers. And they eat your books!

CowsLookLikeMaps OP ,

Thank you for your explanation! I feel a tiny bit better about them now despite constantly being startled by a massive one in the sink, etc.

The only bug I’ve seen is small spiders and the occasional but very rare silverfish or pill bug. We certainly don’t have cockroaches or bed bugs. Is it feasible to get rid of their food source or is that a lost cause?

I’d prefer IamA’s, instead of AMA’s. Stuff like I am a Ukrainian freedom fighter, I am lawyer that represented a serial killer, I am terminally ill. I wanna know what the people are doing, not what the celebs are doing.

Personally I’m not very interesting, but I know some of yous are. Let’s all chat!

It’s not perfect. But I’ve noticed a disdain for Lemmy in people for no reason at all. I think it’s due to the perceived complexity. If you go to join-lemmy.org, it’s a little confusing. Many simply give up trying to decide which instance to join. That’s a reason why sites like squabbles are getting so much attention.

I see a lot of parallels with the path that Reddit is going down that reminds me of the fall of Digg. I see the Reddit API backlash basically being the same as the backlash that Digg v4 got from community members.
