If you’re already using Nextcloud, it has a chat w/ video chat as well.
Matrix / Synapse / Element.io is also pretty cool. The UX might not be on par with what some family expects though. I don’t know if voice/video chat is built-in yet or not, but it was at least an option before.
Life isn’t exactly an “accident.” Your parents had to make a deliberate choice to have sex. Now, there is some sort of probability involved in the chances of pregnancy, which sperm cell creates a new person, and that new person actually surviving all the way to birth and beyond. But ultimately I wouldn’t call life an “accident” outside of some very specific scenarios involving the parents. Your parents chose to create a new person, and that new person was you.
The purpose of life? Who’s to say? Ask ten people and you’ll get ten different answers. Some people spend their entire lives trying to answer that for themselves, others ignore it entirely. It’s a question only you can determine the answer for yourself. But my answer to the question will likely be entirely different from your answer.

If anything it’s the reverse I’d think. Just look at books without a Happily Ever After and how that’s looked down on, and why its a requirement for Romance publishers.
Romance isn’t exactly a respected genre. Misogyny has a lot to do with that but the genre’s tendency towards formulaic tropes doesn’t help.
And before you get to the Happily Ever After? It has to be a rocky road, with a break-up. It’s almost like the HEA has to be earned through pain.
My 5T has been my daily driver for years. I’ve replaced the battery & USB port on it once so far, and that’s it. I’ve also run LineageOS (rooted + Magisk) since day 1, which I agree is its own set of challenges. Seriously no complaints and I’m not really shopping for anything more right now.
If the Fairphone 5 specs are solid I may take the plunge, but for my needs nothing else out there has been compelling enough to make a change.
I am only slightly better than a "casual" user in terms of Android phones. The most I've done is flash LineageOS on my phone. I think smartphones have reached the pinnacle for users like me. Like TVs I'm really wondering where smartphones could possibly go from here. As long as all the apps work and the battery can last a full working day I don't think I'll be replacing my 8T any time soon.
If there's one thing I'd be looking for it would be Android's answer to iMessage. But that ball is in Google's court. Ideally it would be an open protocol, preferably they would just adopt something that already exists, like Matrix Chat.

I just moved away from my 7T onto a Pixel 7. I love my 7T. It was definitely my favorite phone. But it seems like things have changed lately and the newer OnePlus phones aren't what they used to be. I still use my 7T as a game and media player for when I'm chilling in bed.
Fully agree. I still have my 7T Pro, and I’m not looking forward to upgrading it when I have to! I loved when it was a simple upgrade on base android, but with the newer versions, it has veered away from that. I’m disappointed with the updates - I haven’t done the latest update as lots of people are complaining that it’s very buggy, and it doesn’t look like they are going to update it again.
I don’t think I’d go for a OnePlus again - I’d probably go with something more stock, with hopefully more reliable updates, like a Pixel.
A search for “raddle vs lemmy” also turns up a very spicy post from a couple weeks ago (on raddle) regarding one of Lemmy’s creators, not sure what to make of it personally.
Lemmy is turning into a left-wing echo chamber. The mods have declared that right-leaning opinions are not welcome and are defederating from any right-leaning instances. If you declare that half the population is not welcome, you’re really limiting your reach. It’s also going to be a pain to have two logins, one for lemmy.world and one for the free speech instances.
I imagine there will be a big uptick in the number of new users but it won’t be a huge wave, not initially. Human nature being what it is, users will switch to the official app, mods will try and muddle through with a more limited toolbox and, slowly, the wheels will fall off as people find that the user experience has been degraded, leading to a fairly steady flow of people moving over (and a decent number moving on as Lemmy likely isn’t ready for primetime just yet). I think what will be key is whether the most experienced moderators and most active posters make the jump - without them the site is a hollow shell as it is largely built on their disproportionate contribution. That might speed up Reddit’s downfall.
The best thing we can do is make their landing as soft as possible.

yeah I think the apps just aren’t there yet. I used connect for lemmy and today I’ve installed lemming which has the edit and block functions but looks clunky. can’t have it all I suppose.
