Something interesting. Like 2 USB-C ports, also a nice hard plastic back, since they are so hard to find now.

Astigma ,
@Astigma@feddit.uk avatar

Oh boy do I have the phone for you Margot. Check out the ASUS ROG Phone 7 Ultimate. It has a USB-C port on the bottom as you’d expect but also one on the side for when you’re holding the phone horizontally but still want to charge.

Is this actually happening? Reddit bots posting negative impact content to torpedo Lemmy?

I know the other day I saw John Oliver and Disney on the front page. I hope those users gets banned.

kippidashira , to android in What niche phone features would appeal to you?
@kippidashira@kbin.social avatar

Ability to use the screen as a display through the USB port so I can debug a lot of my systems at home without needing to carry a monitor around.

original_ish_name ,

sounds like more of a software feature

bric ,

Actually I doubt it, video in and video out likely needs totally different wiring, so most phones probably couldn’t do it without hardware changes

dutchkimble , to android in What niche phone features would appeal to you?

Max 4 inch screen, IR blaster, physical keyboard with speed dial settings for buttons, form factor like the Xperia x10 mini pro, headphone jack, cameraless, LED with customisable lights for different notifications, bonus - built in projector, satellite phone capability,

NicoCharrua ,
@NicoCharrua@lemmy.ca avatar

Out of curiosity, why would you want a phone with no cameras?

And do phones with built in projectors exist? That sounds amazing, even if I would almost never use it

dutchkimble ,

I never really use the camera for anything meaningful, and prefer video call on the laptop.

Don't think projector phones exist, just a wishlist for something cool!

doolittle , to piracy in Fediverse equivalent of r/OpenSignups?

I’m sad at how few alternatives I’ve been able to find for my go-to subs. Thankfully, the piracy community is nailing it.

jivandabeast OP ,

Agreed but as time goes on and the community grows these things will come! The piracy community in general i think is pretty quick to switch platforms because we’re so used to main hubs going down overnight (i.e. rarbg, kat, etc) and having to find the new spot.

I honestly don’t know, but if I had to hazard a guess, it would be being able to interact with the Beehaw crowd.

Lermatroid ,

Are other lemmy instances not federated with beehaw?

dan96kid ,
@dan96kid@lemmy.world avatar

As far as I’m aware, only lemmy.world and some other instance I forgot the name of got defederated by them.

Lermatroid ,

That sucks and seems pretty short sighted :/

Does this mean posts from beehaw will not be in my lemmy feed, or is it simply I cannot interact with those posts in such a way that beehaw users would see?

Thteven ,
@Thteven@lemmy.world avatar

Beehaw will still be in the feed unless Lemmy defederates from them too. The comments you leave on beehaw posts will not be viewable to beehaw users though.

le_saucisson_masque , to linux in Why many people are switching to NixOS ?

I keep seeing trends with Linux distribution like teenager looking for new fashion.

I think it’s mostly the very young Linux user who hope from one distribution to the another over and over whereas many just stick with what they got : Ubuntu, Debian, mint, maybe fedora.

NixOS is certainly interesting tho.

choroalp ,

Atleast NixOS isnt one of the countless Arch based distros emerged since pandemic

chuso , to asklemmy in I am new to the Fediverse. I vaguely understand how Lemmy instances broadcast content to each other, but I was surprised to find Lemmy communities on kbin. How does that work?

dandan ,

spaduf , to newcommunities in [META] Creating a new community is easy, but to get people on board, you need to create some content.

I understand the desire to automate this sort of thing and I can understand the utility at first but I think we should absolutely be afraid of that in long term use. Instead I think people should use the built in cross posting function to link conversations from different communities. I think this is a great way to build slow diffusion of communities into the fediverse.

See my post here for an example: lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/217550

FearTheCron ,

Yeah, automatic posts drive me away faster than anything. Good point on cross posting though, I just followed your advice. It’s pretty much free if your post fits in multiple places and there are lots of nearly empty communities right now.

dbemol , to piracy in Why is thepiratebay not in the megathread, despite being so much better?

TPB is not what used to be anyways

TWeaK ,

TPB is exactly what it used to be, it hasn’t been updated in nearly 2 decades.

As the site maintainers used to and still do say, if you don’t like it, make your own.

PirateForDaLolz ,

People can and have made sites that are better than TPB. Functionally, TPB’s site is still usable (and also quite a nostalgia trip with its appearance), but in terms of the content, there are a ton of malware-laced torrents on there. I understand that you always have to be careful when torrenting regardless of where you get something from, but it’s kind of a bad sign when you’re looking for something, and most of the torrents you find are malicious.

realcaseyrollins , to technology in How do you find RSS feeds that you're interested in?

I generally go to a website and if I like the content, I look for an RSS icon. If I can't find one, I'll browse to either [domain]/rss, [domain]/rss.xml, [domain]/feed or [domain]/feed.xml, because most websites that support RSS will have an XML file at that location. This has worked for every site I've tried it on so far, except for Genius' website.

@QDidNothingWrong I suspect it's just a simple case of the actor getting it wrong and no one on set really noticed at the time. It's definitely not the standard form.

QDidNothingWrong OP ,

Another fascinating point is it’s not tradition to do the Vulcan salute to a non-Vulcan of which none of the characters on screen were so it’s strange he’d use that salute when not referencing anything Vulcan in the scene.

knF , to selfhosted in Sustainable self-hosting services?

I’m hosting al my services on an old Android mobile with termux. Power consumption is ridiculous, not 100% sustainable but it is very low power. You could add solar panels and you’re done. In terms of performance, mainly for family use, I’ve never had an issue once I plugged it to an ethernet port.

abominable_panda ,

Mind telling us more about this please? What services are you running and how? Docker?

knF ,

No Docker unfortunately, it would require either to recompile the mobile Kernel or use QEMU and I believe it would have a big impact on the performances. Basically this time the approach was: what can I do with an old mobile without rooting or anything. Hardware:

  • Samsung S20
  • USB3 to Ethernet & charger port
  • 128GB SD card

Sofrware:

  • Termux (android app)
  • SSH (OpenSSH in Termux)
  • Rclone (in Termux)
  • Sonarr, Radarr, Lidarr, Prowlarr (in proot-distro)
  • Transmission (in proot-distro)
  • Kavitha (in proot-distro)
  • Podgrab (in proot-distro)
  • Ombi (in proot-distro)
  • ntfy (in proot-distro)
  • Filebrowser (in proot-distro)
  • Vaultwarden (in proot-distro)
  • Homer with lighttpd (in proot-distro)

Since I wasn’t able to install .NET Runtime in Termux directly, I used the proot-distro (Ubuntu) and inside I’ve installed all the services. Services are started manually every time I restart the proot-distro (unfortunately I’m getting an error when installing Termux:Boot), it’s a simple script so I’m not dying over it. To keep the proot-distro alive I launch is with the screen command so I’m ensuring persistence even when the terminal is closed.

It’s not a clean solution like docker etc. but I’m consuming 5 or 10Wh of energy every day which is close to nothing and probably sustainable with a solar panel.

Every once in a while (basically when the SD is almost full) I transfer the files with rclone to an external drive where I consolidate the files.

Oh extra tip, with rclone you can create a DLNA server so you can serve the files you have download immediately (tested with VNC and Kodi)

The phone/server has still room (CPU & RAM) to go and possibly I could install HomeAssistant without any issue. Also I could add Joplin and Floccus using webdav for storage as I had in my previous server but I don’t miss them.

Any other questions, doubts, scripts, feel free to ask!

CaptainBlagbird ,
@CaptainBlagbird@lemmy.world avatar

Were you able to use the phone Bluetooth in HomeAssistant?

(Or do you not have access to interfaces like that with proot-distro? I’m not at all familiar with it…)

knF ,

Unfortunately I didn’t give it a try.

I tried HA Bluetooth presence detector on my PC some time ago with not so good results and since that time I didn’t gave another go.

I saw a Termux-bluetooth package so it could be a feasible thing.

kg333 , to startrek in S1E14 - What is this reverse 🖖 hand signal Riker does?
@kg333@sh.itjust.works avatar

It is a Vulcan salute: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vulcan_salute

I don’t recall why Riker would have been using one in that context, though, unless TNG was trying to establish the gesture had expanded in use across the Federation.

EDIT: also, this is in S01E15 “11001001”, not E14.

QDidNothingWrong OP ,

The thing is… the Vulcan salute is palm out. He has palm in, thumb in. It caught me off guard which was why I felt the need to come post as I couldn’t find it anywhere online.

Someology ,
@Someology@lemmy.world avatar

Nope. His palm is definitely out. He just doesn’t have his thumb extended. Other than the thumb, it’s a completely normal Vulcan salute. Perhaps Frakes had a bit of trouble with it early on and just hadn’t got his thumb out properly yet?

QDidNothingWrong OP ,

No. It is not. I’ve watched the scene a dozen times. His palm is in… facing him, and thumb is in. Even in the screenshot I posted his palm is in.
